Flames activate Backlund from injured reserve, Baertschi sent to AHL

CALGARY – Mikael Backlund was activated from the Calgary Flames‘ injured reserve on Saturday and Sven Baertschi was sent to the minors to make room for the returning veteran.

Backlund was out over four weeks with a grade 2 medial collateral ligament sprain suffered on Feb. 7 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 23-year-old has three goals, an assist and a minus-1 rating in eight games with the Flames.

Baertschi started the 2012-13 season with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, playing 21 games, with six goals and 12 assists. He joined the Flames for the start of the NHL season but suffered a hip flexor injury that forced him to miss 11 games.

The 20-year-old has an assist and a minus-2 rating in 10 NHL games.

Baertschi was Calgary’s first round selection, 13th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Sigurdsson: I was right to snub Liverpool

Gylfi Sigurdsson believes Tottenham’s lofty position in the Premier League proves he made the right decision to turn down Liverpool in favour of a move to Spurs last summer.

Gylfi Sigurdsson: Midfield playmaker

• Fitch: Few teams can match hot Spurs

The Icelandic midfielder was expected to link up with Rodgers last summer after successful spells under his guidance at Reading and Swansea, but he sealed a move to Tottenham instead and has insisted he is content with his decision, even though he has taken time to find his feet in the Spurs starting line-up.

“It was hard to turn down Liverpool because I knew Brendan,” Sigurdsson told reporters. “It wasn’t about the history at Liverpool because that is incredible, but I had to make a choice and I went with Tottenham.

“You can see how well this club has been doing over the last few years. They finished fourth last year and they did well in the Champions League two years before that.

“There was a lot going on here at Tottenham with the new training ground and the plans for another stadium. This is a great club with fantastic players and I’m pleased I made the choice I did. Hopefully we can be in the Champions League next season.

“You never know how things might be in this game. It could be that we were seventh in the table now and Liverpool could have been third because it is all close.”

Sigurdsson is looking forward to his Premier League meeting with Rodgers on Sunday at Anfield, as he is eager to build on what he hails as his best performance in a Spurs shirt in the Europa League against Inter Milan on Wednesday night.

“I owe him a lot for giving me an opportunity at Reading and then for giving me my first chance in the Premier League with Swansea,” added Sigurdsson. “It was really hard to tell him I didn’t want to play for him this time but it will be really good to see him on Sunday.

“Hopefully I get a chance to continue in the team because I feel as if my performance against Inter Milan was my best game for Spurs. It is good to get two starts in a row and these are the games you want to play in.

“It was really important to get my first league goal (against West Ham). Now I’ve got my second European goal. It gave me a bit of a lift and hopefully we can continue that run and build on it.”

South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney buys $5M insurance policy

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney recently took out a $5 million insurance policy on his health.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney has taken out a $5 million insurance policy to protect himself financially during the Gamecocks’ 2013 season.

The All-American defensive end used Twitter to laugh off discussions last month about if he should sit out the year and not risk injury, but he apparently has been seriously thinking about his NFL future.

Debate: The Clowney controversy

NFL rules won’t allow South Carolina star Jadeveon Clowney to enter the draft until 2014. Our analysts debate a hot topic. More …

Several analysts say the 6-foot-6 Clowney would be the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft if he were eligible. That led to questions if Clowney should consider not playing and avoid possibly suffering an injury that might ruin his draft status.

Clowney said there never was a doubt he would play, but he did use the NCAA’s “Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Program” that permits qualifying athletes in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and ice hockey, to take out a loan to help finance the cost of an insurance policy, which they must repay upon signing a pro contract.

Clowney confirmed Thursday that he had the $5 million policy, but he did not say he was concerned about being injured.

The $5 million is the maximum amount allowed, and NCAA spokesman Chris Radford has said such policies cost about $30,000. Radford said between 75 and 100 athletes take advantage of the program annually — about 80 percent of those are football players.

Woods tied for lead at Doral as McIlroy struggles (Yahoo! Sports)

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods and most of the world’s best golfers were on their games Thursday in the Cadillac Championship.

Except for the world’s No. 1 player.

Woods made birdie on half his holes on the Blue Monster at Doral for a 6-under 66. He was part of a five-way tie for the lead that included Masters champion Bubba Watson, former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Freddie Jacobson. Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan were among those one shot behind.

It was another struggle for Rory McIlroy. He hit only three fairways and made six bogeys that kept him at par or worse on a perfect day for scoring. He wound up with a 73, and has yet to have a round under par this year.

Edwards and Johnson disagree on the restart rules (Yahoo! Sports)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Just two races into the season and NASCAR already has a little driver discord.

Jimmie Johnson didn’t like the way Carl Edwards restarted the race at Phoenix, intimating Edwards didn’t follow the rules to the letter while snapping his 70-race winless streak.

”I felt like Carl didn’t follow the restart protocol and was slower than the pace car on his last two restarts, and it gives the leader a huge advantage when that happens,” Johnson said after the race.

It’s no surprise that Edwards felt it was Johnson, who was lined up behind Edwards in third on one restart – and next to Edwards in second on another – who was playing the games.

”I thought, ‘Man, he’s playing some kind of trick, he’s speeding up,”’ Edwards said about the final restart. ”I thought, ‘What’s he doing?’ I thought he was speeding up, and I thought it was pretty genius what he was doing because he kind of got me off of my game. But then when I went, I think maybe he wasn’t looking at me or something because it seemed like he waited just a little bit too long to go.

”But truthfully that was not by design. I was not trying to do anything tricky. I thought he was.”

Now the two go to Las Vegas, where they could be racing each other at the end for the victory.

Both Johnson and Edwards are among the top active drivers at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a combined six victories in the desert. Edwards’ last win prior to his Phoenix victory was at Vegas in 2011, and he’s completed every lap in his eight races on the 1.5-mile track.

Edwards’ driver rating is sixth best among active drivers according to NASCAR’s loop data.

”Since the test in Charlotte this offseason, the whole 99 team has been looking forward to the race in Vegas,” Edwards said. ”We’re going to Las Vegas to make it two-in-a-row. We feel like we can use the momentum we’ve got and the confidence we built there in Phoenix to go have great pit stops, qualify well and race hard all day.”

Johnson is a four-time winner at Las Vegas, and was second there last season after leading 35 laps. He goes into Las Vegas as the Sprint Cup Series points leader, and is listed by the LVH Super Book in Las Vegas as the favorite to win Sunday’s race and the 5/1 favorite to win this year’s championship.

NO MORE SPEED, KIND OF: The launch of Fox Sports 1 in August means the end of the Speed channel as racing fans know it today.

The new channel will have some of Speed’s current programming, including Spring Cup practice and qualifying sessions, Camping World Truck Series races as well as practice and qualifying, the Sprint All-Star Race, Daytona 500 qualifying and the Budweiser Duels.

Speed shows such as ”NASCAR RaceDay,” ”NASCAR Victory Lane” and ”Race Hub” will be added to the Fox Sports 1 lineup. ”Race Hub,” typically a 6 p.m. Eastern show on Speed, will move to midday.

The Sprint Unlimited will be on Fox Sports 1 in 2014 and 2017-2022.

But, the network has also said select Sprint Cup Series races will be shown on the new Fox Sports 1 channel starting in 2015. Fox Sports Media Group has the rights to the first 13 races of the season.

CALL A FRIEND: With Michael Annett out indefinitely because of a fractured sternum, he called on good friend Reed Sorenson to drive his Nationwide Series car.

Annett had a plate inserted into his chest last week to help heal the fracture suffered in the season-opening Nationwide race at Daytona. He could be sidelined as long as two months.

Sorenson will take over the Richard Petty Motorsports ride beginning this weekend at Las Vegas.

”It’s an unfortunate situation for the team and Michael,” he said. ”I have been to the hospital to see him, and he will be fine, but it’s going to take some time to heal. As a friend for a long time, my initial reaction was concern. I’m glad that he’s recovering now.”

Sorenson has 173 career Nationwide and 183 career Cup starts. He’s won four Nationwide races, none since Road America in 2011.

”It was very unexpected to get the opportunity to step in,” Sorenson said. ”The best part is that my friend, Michael, will be cheering for me.”

GIRL POWER: There’s been no talk of Danica Patrick in the NHRA, where women drivers are the norm.

In fact, it’s been business as usual as Courtney Force and Erica Enders-Stevens posted back-to-back victories to open 2013. It marked the first time in NHRA history two women opened a season with consecutive victories.

Force won in Funny Car at the season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Calif., last month while Enders-Stevens won last weekend in Pro Stock by beating Mike Edwards in the final round at Phoenix.

Enders-Stevens used a reaction time advantage to beat event top qualifier Edwards in the 200 mph factory hot rod category.

”We’re not out here just to race against the boys,” Force has said. ”We’re here to beat the boys.” Now that’s girl power.”

The Girl Power theme could continue at the Gatornationals next weekend, where Leah Pruett, Alexis DeJoria, Brittany Force and Katie Sullivan will all be looking for their first win of the season.

CHAVEZ’ SUPPORT: Hugo Chavez was a longtime supporter of motorsports, and his Tuesday passing could affect the careers of several drivers currently competing in series around the world.

Formula One driver Pastor Maldonado races with sponsorship support from the Venezuelan government and the PDVSA logo has been on his Williams F1 livery since his 2011 debut.

IndyCar driver E.J. Viso has long had Venezuelan backing, but his PDVSA signage switched to CITGO last season. He moved his sponsorship money to Andretti Autosport during the offseason. Viso also launched the ”Team Viso Venezuela” initiative to support young drivers in the Mazda Road to Indy ladder.

Milka Duno, who currently races in the ARCA Series, also had high-profile sponsorship from CITGO when she raced in IndyCar. Her 2013 sponsor in ARCA is CANTV, the leading integrated telecommunications provider in Venezuela.

Knicks rally without Melo, beat Cavaliers 102-97 (Yahoo! Sports)

CLEVELAND (AP) — Amare Stoudemire scored 22 points, J.R. Smith added 18 and the New York Knicks overcame a 22-point deficit without All-Star Carmelo Anthony to beat the Cavaliers 102-97 on Monday night, ending a 10-game losing streak in Cleveland.

Steve Novak made three of New York’s seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Knicks rallied and shook off a tough home loss on Sunday, when they blew a 16-point lead to Miami.

The Knicks trailed 52-30 in the second quarter of this one when Anthony injured his right knee. He stumbled and fell awkwardly after catching a pass and did not return.

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points in his return after missing Cleveland’s past three games with a hyperextended right knee.

After New York’s Jason Kidd split a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left, the Cavaliers had a chance to tie it.

Coach Byron Scott put the ball in the hands of Irving, who scored a career-high 41 against the Knicks on Dec. 15. The dazzling point guard couldn’t beat Tyson Chandler off the dribble and then had his 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds left blocked cleanly by New York’s 7-foot-1 center.

Smith was fouled and made two free throws in the final second to close out a win the Knicks needed badly.

New York coach Mike Woodson sat Stoudemire for the final eight minutes on Sunday, prompting some serious second-guessing by Knicks fans and media. Before facing the Cavs, Woodson said he would use Stoudemire when the matchups were right and the occasion called for the power forward.

Without Anthony, Woodson needed every second he could get out of Stoudemire, who powered inside for a critical putback with 39.5 seconds left to put the Knicks ahead 99-95.

Irving responded for the Cavs with a left-handed layup, but on New York’s next trip, Chandler did a nice job tapping out a miss by Stoudemire and Cleveland had to foul Kidd, who couldn’t close it out at the line and the Knicks had to turn to their defense to complete the comeback.

The Knicks were down 52-30 when Anthony caught a pass near midcourt, tripped over his own feet and fell. He stayed on his back for several seconds, got up and headed directly to New York’s locker room. Anthony didn’t appear to be injured and seemed to be more embarrassed than anything.

With Anthony out and icing his knee and maybe getting a massage for his ego, the Knicks went on a 17-4 run and closed within 61-49 at halftime – not bad, considering how poorly they had played.

Woodson started Stoudemire and Smith in the second half and the Knicks opened the third with a 15-3 spurt, catching the Cavs at 64-all.

The Cavs were without rookie starters Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller, who were both stricken with a nasty stomach virus over the weekend. They were taken to the hospital to get fluids, but were resting at home during the game.

Cleveland’s Marreese Speights made his first 10 shots and finished with 23 points. Luke Walton added a career-high 12 assists for the Cavs, who hadn’t lost at home to the Knicks since 2006.

Despite shooting 4 of 18 from the field, the Cavs carried a 74-70 lead into the fourth.

However, the Knicks erased that with three quick 3-pointers, the last by Novak to make it 79-78 with 9:09 remaining. Kidd also made a big 3-pointer with 1:36 left put the Knicks up 97-91.

Irving picked up a quick assist and then made his first shot – a 3-pointer – and set the early tone for the Cavaliers, who shot 74 percent (14 of 19) in the first quarter and opened a 10-point lead.

NOTES: Anthony had six points and three turnovers before he got hurt. … Knicks C Marcus Camby played for the first time since Jan. 10. He had been sidelined with plantar fasciitis. … Former Knicks sartorial star Walt ”Clyde” Frazier received a nice ovation when he was shown on the arena’s scoreboard. Frazier played 66 games for Cleveland in the 1970s after he was traded by New York. … According to Forbes, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is worth $3.5 billion. In the magazine’s annual ranking of the world’s billionaires, Gilbert is 348th. He has added more than $1.5 billion to his net worth since September – and $2 billion over the last year. Gilbert controls about 40 companies.

Monday’s NHL Capsules

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored less than 2 minutes apart in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied past the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Monday night.

Chris Kunitz added his 12th of the season for Pittsburgh and James Neal scored an empty-net goal in the final minute as the Penguins sent the struggling Lightning to their fifth straight loss.

Malkin, making his return after missing four games due to a concussion, tied it 5:38 into the third period on a pretty breakaway. Crosby put Pittsburgh in front moments later with a slap shot from the slot that zipped past Anders Lindback and into the net.

Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos scored twice to push his league-leading total to 17, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lightning’s slide.

Maple Leafs 4, Devils 2

TORONTO (AP) — Nazem Kadri continued his points streak Monday with a goal and an assist against the struggling Devils.

Clarke MacArthur, Jay McClement and Phil Kessel — with his first goal on home ice this season — scored in the third period for Toronto. Kadri connected in the first period and assisted on MacArthur’s goal to earn points in his fifth straight game.

The 22-year-old Kadri leads the Leafs with 23 points in 23 games.

James Reimer, making his first appearance at Air Canada Centre since Feb. 11 after a mild knee ligament strain, made 28 saves for the win.

Marek Zidlicky scored twice for New Jersey, which hasn’t won in five games. Ryan Carter assisted on both goals and Johan Hedberg stopped 19 shots for the Devils.
