No. 2 Indiana beats No. 7 Michigan 72-71 for title (Yahoo! Sports)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Cody Zeller made a go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and altered Trey Burke‘s shot at the other end, lifting No. 2 Indiana to a 72-71 victory over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday that gave the Hoosiers their first outright Big Ten title in two decades.

The Hoosiers (26-5, 14-4) trailed by five points in the last minute but took advantage when the Wolverines (25-6, 12-6) were unable to seal it at the foul line. Jordan Morgan had a fairly easy tip-in attempt of Burke’s miss that cut have won it for Michigan, but the ball rolled tantalizingly off the rim and Indiana’s Christian Watford grabbed the rebound with 4 seconds left.

A couple of Michigan’s rivals surely wish the Wolverines had won.

Ohio State, which beat Illinois on Sunday, needed an Indiana loss to earn a share of the conference championship. Michigan State was in the same position before hosting Northwestern later in the day.

Morgan made a tiebreaking putback with 1:35 left, teammate Tim Hardaway followed with a layup on the Wolverines’ next possession and Glen Robinson III made the first of two free throws with 52 seconds to go, giving the Wolverines a 71-66 lead.

After Zeller made a shot on the ensuing possession, Hardaway missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Zeller then connected on two free throws and Burke couldn’t convert at the line, missing the front end of another haunting 1-and-1.

Zeller hit another big shot down low, the one that counted most in a game Indiana might have needed to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Hoosiers will be the top-seeded team at this week’s Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

Burke and Indiana’s Victor Oladipo, both of whom are Big Ten and national player of the year candidates, struggled to make shots all game at Crisler Center.

Zeller, meanwhile, made sure no one forgot about him.

The 7-foot sophomore center altered Burke’s shot in the lane and was ready to celebrate when Morgan’s tip attempt rolled off.

Fittingly, the Big Ten title didn’t come easy for the Hoosiers.

Zeller scored 25 points and pulled down rebounds. Oladipo had 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting and 13 rebounds. Will Sheehey scored 10 points, six of which came on key 3-pointers.

Burke scored 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting. Robinson had 13 points, Nik Stauskas scored 12 and Hardaway had 11. The Wolverines 7 of 13 at the line.

Indiana, looking as though it didn’t want to give any other team a piece of the Big Ten championship, got off to a strong start and led 10-3 when Yogi Ferrell’s field goal followed a pair of 3-pointers from Jordan Hulls.

The Wolverines took control in the first half with a 12-0 run, but faded toward halftime and led 33-30 after 20 minutes.

Michigan led by as many as 11 points – matching the biggest lead any team has had against the Hoosiers – and looked as though it was going to be on the winning end of a closely contested game until it simply could not make key free throws or stop Zeller.

Kory Lichtensteiger, Washington Redskins reach deal

As we saw with Saturday morning’s five-year pact between William Moore and the Atlanta Falcons, NFL teams are allowed to re-sign their own free agents during the unrestricted free-agent negotiating window.

Unofficial list of free agents

Check out this unofficial list of the restricted and unrestricted free agents for every team, which includes Greg Jennings. More …

The Washington Redskins are the latest team to strike a deal. Free-agent guard Kory Lichtensteiger announced via Twitter Saturday night that he’s reached his own agreement with the Redskins. Both the Washington Post and the Washington Times have confirmed the accord, saying it’s a five-year deal.

An undersized guard ill-suited to a power-blocking run game, Lichtensteiger wasn’t expected to draw heavy interest on the open market. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has always valued him more than other teams around the NFL because his athleticism is a plus in the zone-blocking scheme. Re-signing the 28-year-old provides continuity up front, though Lichtensteiger will have to hold off 2012 third-round draft pick Josh LeRibeus.

For a team reportedly in a financial holding pattern due to their looming salary-cap penalty appeal, the Redskins did well to lock up Lichtensteiger, fullback Darrell Young, and tight end Logan Paulsen to multiyear contracts on Saturday.

Percy Harvin reportedly demands trade from Vikings

It’s been obvious since last spring’s holdout threats that wide receiver Percy Harvin‘s arranged marriage with the Minnesota Vikings isn’t a happy one.

The offseason already has brought reports that Harvin will be shopped, that the team wants to keep the disgruntled receiver, and finally that general manager Rick Spielman has no intention of making a trade.

Add another log to the bonfire. Citing “some good sources around the NFL,” the Star Tribune’s Sid Hartman reported Saturday that Harvin has informed the Vikings that he “doesn’t want to play for them and wants to be traded.”

Shocking, I know. Hartman is a columnist with a hit-and-miss history of breaking news, but it’s certainly credible that Harvin has told the Vikings he would rather be traded than going through the dog-and-pony show of a prolonged holdout starting in the offseason and carrying through training camp.

If the report is true, it’s the second time in less than a year that Harvin has requested a trade.

Seeking a lucrative contract extension near Calvin Johnson territory, Harvin won’t be in attendance when the Vikings begin workouts April 22. A Vikings source told Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole there’s fear in the front office that the “strong-willed” Harvin will hold out long into the 2013 season if his demands aren’t met.

At this point, a Vikings-Harvin divorce appears to be inevitable.

Getzlaf gets new deal, 500th point as Ducks down Flames

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Daniel Winnik ended an 18-game goal drought on the first shot of the game and Viktor Fasth posted his second career shutout for the Anaheim Ducks with 29 saves in a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

Bobby Ryan and defenceman Sheldon Souray scored less than 2 1-2 minutes apart in the second period for Anaheim, who have won 16 straight at home against Calgary.

Ryan, shaken up during the opening period when he slid into the end boards unchecked behind the Calgary net, made it 2-0 . Corey Perry set up the play from behind the net after getting the puck from Ryan Getzlaf, who notched his 500th NHL point on the same day he signed an eight-year, $66 million contract extension.

The Ducks, leading the league in power-play conversion percentage, matched up against a Calgary squad averaging the second-fewest penalty minutes behind Nashville. The Flames went the entire game without a penalty, the first time this season they weren’t short-handed. But Getzlaf scored his 10th goal late in the third period on a delayed penalty that would have been called against Mark Giordano for upending Perry.

The Ducks also have won 10 straight at home, one shy of the franchise record set in 2009-10.

Calgary hasn’t won in Anaheim since Jan. 19, 2004, and has only one regulation victory over the Ducks on the road in 25 tries since winning the Stanley Cup in 1999.

Anaheim improved the NHL’s second-best record to 17-3-3. The Ducks climbed within eight points of the Chicago Blackhawks, whose league-record streak of 24 games without a regulation loss at the start of a season ended Friday with a 6-2 loss at Colorado.

Miikka Kiprusoff, who returned to the nets on Wednesday night after missing 13 games with a sprained knee and beat San Jose 4-1 for his 300th victory in a Flames uniform, stopped 20 shots.

Winnik was right in front of the crease when he one-timed a pass from behind the net from Andrew Cogliano 75 seconds after the opening faceoff. It was his first goal since Jan. 26.

The Flames had scored in the opening period in each of their previous seven games, and outshot the Ducks 10-4 through the first 20 minutes. But Fasth (10-1-1) stopped Michal Cammalleri’s point-blank wrist shot from 20 feet, and Roman Cervenka redirected Jiri Hudler‘s pass directly into the goalie’s midsection from the slot.

It was more of the same in the second period for the frustrated Flames. Cammalleri was robbed when Fasth did the splits and made a spread-eagle save with his left foot. Curtis Glencross was denied by Fasth on a tricky backhander from in close.

Souray scored Anaheim’s third goal on a long slap shot that beat Kiprusoff through a screen.

NOTES: Getzlaf is the second player to score his first 500 NHL points in a Ducks uniform, joining Paul Kariya (669). … The Ducks haven’t lost at Honda Center since their home opener, when Vancouver beat them 5-0. They can equal their longest home winning streak if they beat St. Louis on Sunday. The Blues have lost five straight in Anaheim and nine of their last 10 here. … Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne is two points behind Bryan Trottier’s total of 1,425 for 15th place on the career list. Calgary captain Jarome Iginla‘s next goal will tie Trottier for 32nd place all-time at 524. … The Flames will remain in Southern California for back-to-back games against the Stanley Cup champion Kings on Saturday and Monday nights.

Steven Jackson envisions himself as a starter for whatever team he plays for next season.

ESPN.com’s Mike Sando writes about all things NFC West in his division blog.

• Network: NFL Nation

“For where I’m at, going into Year 10, I’m not ready to step back and just become a primary backup or a reduced role guy to be part of a running back by committee,” Jackson said Thursday on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I still have a lot left in my tank. I still have a lot left to offer to a team. We’re not talking about someone that’s in Year 12 or 13.”

As expected, Jackson voided his contract with the St. Louis Rams on Thursday, making the 29-year-old an unrestricted free agent.

Jackson, the Rams’ career rushing leader, didn’t totally rule out a reduced role should he land with a contender. He never has played for a winning team over his nine-year career.

“Well, that’s where a very open dialogue has to take place,” he said. “I have opted out of my position of being with the team and being comfortable because I want to continue to still be the bell cow. So that’s how I want teams to look at me, that’s how I’m going to shop myself, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there if that’s not the feedback we’re receiving.”

A three-time Pro Bowler, Jackson has topped 1,000 yards rushing in each of the last eight seasons. He rushed for 1,042 yards and four touchdowns last season.

Jackson has 2,395 carries for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns over his career.

Ferguson: Rooney not leaving Man United

Fergie dismisses Rooney rumours

Sir Alex Ferguson has said at his Friday morning press conference that Wayne Rooney will be at Manchester United next season.

Premier League

AssociatedRooney’s future has been the subject of conjecture this week

- Macintosh: Coming to terms

Delaney: Many questions remain

- Man United v Chelsea preview

Speculation over Rooney’s future at Old Trafford has been rife after he was not named in United’s starting XI for their Champions League exit against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The striker, who has scored 11 goals in 20 Premier League games this season, was introduced as a second-half substitute following the dismissal of Nani that helped swing the game in Real’s favour.

ESPN understands the club would be willing to listen to offers for the player this summer, but Ferguson has insisted the England international will be plying his trade at Old Trafford in the 2013-14 campaign.

Ferguson said to the assembled press ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final with Chelsea: “The Wayne Rooney issue first? Or do you want to talk sense?

“The issue you’re all going on about in the papers is absolute rubbish. I’ve banned two papers from the press conference and they won’t get back in here until they apologise.

“There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I. To suggest we don’t talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.

“He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical. And I think I was right. We don’t always get it right but I think we did get it right.

“Danny Welbeck is the best player we have in terms of operating in a double role. We had to choke Xabi Alonso’s ability to control the game, which Danny did, and that took away Alonso’s control of the game and his ability to go further forward and be an attacking player. We don’t always get it right but we definitely did on Tuesday.

“Wayne will be here next year. You have my word on that. I have no issues at all with the player and he’ll be involved on Sunday.”

Rooney, who signed for United from Everton for £20 million in 2004, inked a new five-year contract with the Red Devils in 2010, after announcing that he intended to leave the club amid concerns over the strength of their squad.

Manchester City have previously been mooted as potential suitors for Rooney as have affluent Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain, with the striker’s wages said to be in the region of £200,000-a-week.

Ferguson, though, appears to have ruled out a summer exit, despite numerous reports that the club would consider offers in excess of £25 million.

Howard earns shutout victory as Red Wings beat Oilers

DETROIT — The way the Detroit Red Wings have been playing, it was only a matter of time before Jimmy Howard ended up with a shutout.

Howard made 22 saves, and Jakub Kindl and Cory Emmerton scored in the second period to lift the Red Wings over the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Thursday night.

Detroit has gone five games without allowing a goal in the first or second period, and Howard blanked Edmonton in the third as well for his second shutout of the season.

“I think we’re playing really well as a team right now. We’re doing a lot of great things,” Howard said. “When you work hard and you pay attention to detail, good things happen.”

Justin Abdelkader‘s empty-net goal put the game out of reach.

Howard made 36 saves in a win Tuesday against Colorado, but coach Mike Babcock wasn’t all that impressed with his team’s overall performance that night. The Red Wings were sharper defensively against Edmonton and took control in the second period, when they outshot the Oilers 15-7.

Detroit is 10-0-1 in its last 11 regular-season games against Edmonton.

The Oilers are 0-3-1 in their last four games overall.

After a scoreless first period — a shot off the crossbar by Detroit’s Kyle Quincey was the only noteworthy moment — the Red Wings looked a bit more energized in the second.

Jordin Tootoo fought with Edmonton’s Mike Brown early in the period, and Kindl opened the scoring less than a minute later. Kindl was caught between two Oilers when he managed a shot that slipped through goalie Devan Dubnyk and trickled across the line for a 1-0 lead.

The worst was still to come for Edmonton.

“They dominated us for 10 minutes after that and then they got the 2-0 goal and the game was lost,” Oilers coach Ralph Krueger said. “There’s no excuses for this one. You cannot stop playing for 10 minutes against the Detroit Red Wings and expect to get points.”

The Red Wings added their second goal after some sustained pressure when Emmerton took a pass from Drew Miller and beat Dubnyk high to the stick side from the slot.

“I think I kind of got lost in the change and came in a little bit higher than they expected, but it’s nice to get that little bit of open space,” Emmerton said. “You don’t really get those open-ice chances too often, especially right in the slot.”

Howard had to make a couple of terrific saves against the Avalanche and came within 90 seconds of a shutout in that game. He wasn’t tested as much by Edmonton, even after the Oilers pulled their goalie with more than 2 minutes remaining.

Abdelkader’s empty-netter was his first goal of the season.

“That’s a pretty complete game for us. We didn’t give up very much,” Babcock said. “Obviously, in this last run we’ve had, we’ve played way better defensively. I think with the exception of our last game, we played real well.”

Detroit plays eight of its next 10 games on the road — a tough stretch for a team that’s still in a pretty muddled race for playoff position.

“We’re 5-1-1 in the last seven and it feels like we haven’t moved at all,” Emmerton said. “One day we’re in fourth and the next day we’re in 10th, so every game is huge. Obviously, only Anaheim and Chicago are the only two teams who are really running away with it. So it’s going to be a grind right down for that kind of fourth spot right to eight.”

NOTES: Detroit had 28 shots on goal. … The Red Wings scored more than two goals for the first time in five games, but they’ve lost only once in regulation during that span. … Edmonton’s Taylor Hall was called for high-sticking 56 seconds into the game — and that was the only power play for either team. … It was Howard’s 13th career shutout.
