A date for the FA Cup quarter-final replay between Manchester United and Chelsea is not expected to be announced by the Football Association until later this week.

• Jolly: Rafa brings Blues a replay

United let slip a two-goal lead at Old Trafford in their FA Cup sixth round tie with Chelsea on Sunday, as the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

The draw means a replay at Stamford Bridge must be worked into an already-congested fixture list, which is seemingly dependent on Chelsea’s progress in the Europa League – with the club to face Steaua Bucharest on Thursday.

If Rafael Benitez’s side lose, the replay is set to be played during the first week of April, even though UEFA prefers major countries not to arrange domestic fixtures at the same time as their competitions.

If Chelsea are able to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, then a fixture pile-up would cause a real headache, in particular with the forthcoming international break.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said after Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford: “I don’t know when the replay will be played, probably May!”

Ferdinand may face FA action over Torres

The Football Association may choose to take action against Rio Ferdinand after the Manchester United defender was involved in an incident with Chelsea striker Fernando Torres during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

• Benitez rubbishes tiredness claim
• Jolly: Rafa response earns replay

Ferdinand appeared to trip Torres over in the 86th minute before pushing him in the back as the striker got back up to his feet.

The FA will study the footage before making a final decision but Blues boss Rafa Benitez refused to comment on the altercation.

“I haven’t seen the replay – you can see the replay,” he said when asked for his response. “You have an advantage and can do it now.”

He added: “I don’t talk about things that happen on the pitch.”

Benitez confirmed that he had spoken to Torres about the incident but again refused to go into any details.

United scored two goals in the opening 11 minutes, however, they saw their lead slip as Chelsea fought back to force a replay in the second half.

“We gave them the impetus to claw their way back into the game. We played some great football at times but were so careless at times,” Ferdinand said. “If you are careless you are going to get punished. That was the case.

“But we are still in the cup. Wembley is waiting for one of us to go through and hopefully it is us. We go to Stamford Bridge for the replay with confidence. We have the tools. We have been there before this season and done well and with the squad we have we don’t fear going anywhere.”

Misifirng Real strike duo backed by coach

La Liga news

By Dermot Corrigan, Spain Correspondent

Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka says he is not worried about currently misfiring strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema, as he feels so long as they keep making chances and getting into position the goals will eventually come.

• Blog: Real battle past Celta

Higuain and Benzema were again off target during Saturday’s 2-1 La Liga win at Celta Vigo, when Cristiano Ronaldo’s poacher’s effort and penalty after Kaka was upended by home goalkeeper Javi Varas was needed to see off the relegation-threatened Galicians. Ronaldo now has 24 Primera Division goals this season, well ahead of Higuain [nine] and Benzema [seven] in Madrid’s charts.

Jose Mourinho’s assistant, Karanka, told reporters at Balaidos after the game that he would be more concerned if Madrid were not creating enough chances, but that was not the case.

“Forwards, as they always say, and it is the truth, go through spells of form,” he said. “It might seem that they are not being accurate enough, but the important thing is creating the chances. Last year the chances were going in and this year they are not going in as easily. But if we keep making chances they will start scoring and we will win matches more comfortably.”

Celta played a full part in a very open game, with striker Iago Aspas scoring a deflected equaliser soon after Ronaldo’s first goal, and substitute Park Chu Young heading off the cross bar in the closing stages. In a frantic ending to the match Higuain had previously shot wide from six yards after a rapid counter involving Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil had looked certain to put the game beyond doubt.

Karanka admitted his side had not been at their best in the first half, but had created enough opportunities to win the game comfortably after that.

“We played well enough to have won comfortably,” he said. “In the first 20 minutes or half an hour, the whole team struggled to get into the match. They played with a high defensive line and caught us offside a few times and we could not find a way through.

“In the last 15 minutes, and for part of the second half, the team controlled the match and we had more chances. The problem is that, perhaps, when we could have killed off the match, the goals did not come. And they have had the opportunity to equalise.”

Gerrard: Suarez award snub would be unjust

Liverpool news

By ESPN staff and Mike Whalley

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes that striker Luis Suarez would be “the best player ever not to win an award” if he does not claim an individual honour this season.

Premier League

PA PhotosSuarez’s opening goal against Tottenham was his 50th for Liverpool

• Whalley: AVB frustrated as Reds snatch spoils

Suarez was again on target for the Reds on Sunday as he scored the opener in the 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. That strike took his haul of Premier League goals for the season to 22, three ahead of nearest rival in the scoring charts, Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.

The match was billed as a clash between two of the main candidates for this season’s prizes as Spurs attacker Gareth Bale went up against Uruguay international Suarez.

After the match, Gerrard told the BBC that, while Bale deserved the plaudits he is currently receiving, Suarez just shaded the Welshman as the front-runner for either the PFA Player of the Year award or the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year prize.

When asked about trying to contain Bale in a deeper-lying midfield role, he said: “It’s an impossible task. He’s in top form, probably one of the best players in the world on current form.

“But luckily enough we’ve got a player who is equally as good as him in Luis Suarez. I think Luis may just pip him to Player of the Year, in my opinion. He’s been incredible. It’s hard to put into words how good he’s been.

“He’s been doing that for us all season. Before the last [transfer] deadline we never got that centre-forward, and he’s almost carried us on his own at times because he was the only forward we had. I think he’s top scorer in the league now. If he doesn’t win an award this year, he’ll be the best player ever not to win an award.”

Gerrard also set his team-mates the challenge of finishing above Everton as they look to secure a place in Europe.

The 32-year-old struck the late penalty that secured a dramatic 3-2 Premier League win over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday. That victory moved Brendan Rodgers’ side into the top six – and above their Merseyside neighbours – for the first time this season. It also kept alive their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League as they moved to within seven points of fourth-placed Chelsea, who still have to visit Anfield.

Liverpool have won their last three Premier League matches, beating Swansea 5-0 and Wigan 4-0 before their thrilling comeback from 2-1 down to beat Spurs.

And captain Gerrard wants to keep that momentum going over the final nine games of the season.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “When we went out of the Europa League, the message from the manager and the staff was that we needed to try to win as many of our remaining games as possible and try to finish as high as possible.

“Our form is good but we can’t afford to get carried away just because we’ve beaten Tottenham. We need to show what we’ve shown today in all of our remaining games. We want to finish above Everton and as high as we can in the league.”

Gerrard revealed that his penalty winner owed something to Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg. The Liverpool captain ran over to the bench to celebrate with Achterberg after sending Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot.

He said: “John Achterberg did a montage on their goalie for me before the game. He consistently went to the right and I think he had saved four out of eight going to his right. I was always going to his left having watched that. But if I hadn’t had that montage, then I would probably have gone to his right – so credit to John.”

Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final draw means Liverpool will have to finish fifth to qualify for next season’s Europa League. The European place on offer to the FA Cup winners only defaults to the Premier League if both finalists qualify for the following season’s Champions League.

But with one team out of Wigan, Blackburn and Millwall guaranteed to reach the final, that will not happen whoever wins at Wembley on May 11 – as the FA Cup winners’ Europa League place defaults initially to the runners-up.

It means that sixth place in the Premier League will not be good enough to qualify for Europe. The Premier League’s top four will go into the Champions League, with the team finishing fifth going into the Europa League.

Rodgers hails versatility of in-demand Suarez <img src="http://assets.espn.go.com/icons/watch.png">

ESPN commentator Dan Thomas breaks down a thrilling 3-2 win by Liverpool over Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

Liverpool edge by Tottenham

Brendan Rodgers praised the versatility of Luis Suarez after Liverpool’s 3-2 triumph over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

• Whalley: Liverpool frustrate Villas-Boas
• Blog: Spurs must look on bright side

Suarez opened the scoring for the home side, and won the penalty which allowed Steven Gerrard to slot home the winner from the spot in the 82nd minute. The Uruguay international took his season tally to 29 goals in all competitions, moving Rodgers’ men to within two points of fifth-placed Arsenal.

“Football is worldwide now so everyone has seen how good he is,” Rodgers said of Suarez.

“But he is very happy among his mates here and you have seen today it doesn’t matter where he plays – he was in the number 10 role and then he went in from the side he still created havoc. He knows the trust I put in him and that gives him the platform to go and perform.”

The win was Liverpool’s third consecutive and their first over a top-four opponent, leading Rodgers to hail the character of his charges.

“It was very important win for us,” he said. “We are on a great run at the moment and we knew this was going to be a severe test of our qualities and character against a team in great form.

“For us to get three points and show the character was fantastic and I am delighted for the players because they worked ever so hard.

“You can see the mentality in the group. I thought we had to show different characteristics today than what we have had to do in recent weeks.

“We’ve been comfortable in a lot of the games and been able to control them but against a top side we came through.

“I had to make some changes in the game to get the control back in our favour and when we did that I thought we were good value for the win.”

Defeat ended Spurs’ 12-match unbeaten league run – their last defeat also coming on Merseyside against Everton in December – and manager Andre Villas-Boas said it was harsh on them.

“It is difficult for us to take because we did ever so well to come back into the game in the first half and we started brightly in the second half,” he said.

“We lost control of the game when things looked to be going our way, which was more down to a couple of mistakes we did rather than to Liverpool’s merit – although they worked very hard.”

Mob Wives

You could argue that there are too many “Real Housewives” shows on tv, and you would be right.

As a consolation, at least a lot of the cast members are pretty hot. Not even Milf hot. Some of them are legit hot. Sunday night has four different “Wife” shows: “Real Housewives Of Atlanta,” “Mob Wives,” “Army Wives,” and “The Good Wife.” That’s enough to make you say, “hey, if the internet went down but my tv still worked, I’d be ok.”

Here’s why.

Jets aim for season sweep of struggling Devils on TSN Jets

(Sports Network) – The Winnipeg Jets will try to complete a season series sweep of New Jersey when they visit the struggling Devils for Sunday’s clash at Prudential Center.

Viewers in the Jets region can watch the game on TSN Jets at 6pm ct/7pm et. The game is also available on TSN Radio 1290 in Winnipeg and TSN.ca/Winnipeg.

The teams met for the first time in 2013 on Feb. 24, when Winnipeg recorded a 4-2 road win. Four days later the Jets hosted the Devils and grabbed a 3-1 decision.

Still, New Jersey has six wins in its past nine meetings with the former Atlanta Thrashers franchise and the Jets had dropped five in a row in the Garden State before posting the road win last month.

The Jets are on a two-game win streak and coach Claude Noel’s club has posted victories in five of seven and seven of their last 10 outings. Despite that recent hot streak, Winnipeg is still outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but comes into Sunday’s matchup trailing seventh-seeded New Jersey by just two points.

Winnipeg is 2-1-0 on a four-game road trip that ends in New Jersey. The Jets won in dramatic fashion in their last game, posting a 3-2 overtime decision Friday at Florida.

Dustin Byfuglien scored the game winner with 40.5 seconds left in OT to lift the Jets past the Panthers. Byfuglien had gone 13 games without a goal, but picked a perfect time to notch his fourth tally of the season, as the Winnipeg defenseman stepped through two defenders in the slot before rifling a wrister past the glove side of Jacob Markstrom to send the Jets to victory.

Andrew Ladd registered a goal and an assist, while Blake Wheeler also lit the lamp for the Jets. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 38 shots in the triumph.

“I thought we were a lot better in the way we wanted to play and the way we wanted to get things done,” Noel remarked. “It wasn’t smooth, but I felt that the team wanted to get it done and they did.”

The Jets have a solid 8-5-1 record on the road this season after going 14-22-5 away from Winnipeg in 2011-12.

The Devils hope a trip back home can get them just their second win in nine games. New Jersey ended a six-game losing streak with Thursday’s shootout win over visiting Buffalo, but then lost a 6-3 decision Saturday at Carolina. Jiri Tlusty had two goals and an assist to lead the Hurricanes to the easy win.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice in the loss while Patrik Elias also lit the lamp for the Devils.

“We got outworked in those first two periods and it showed on the scoreboard,” said Kovalchuk. “I thought we finally got things together in the third, but it was too late.”

New Jersey continues to have goaltending issues in the absence of longtime starter Martin Brodeur, who is sidelined with a back injury. Johan Hedberg gave up five goals on 18 shots Saturday before being pulled in favor of Jeff Frazee, who made his NHL debut in the third period and stopped all three shots he faced in relief.

Hedberg has started all eight games since Brodeur last played and despite being 1-6-1 in those tests the veteran is expected to get the call again on Sunday.

In addition to Brodeur, the Devils are missing defensemen Bryce Salvador (upper body) and Henrik Tallinder (lower body). Salvador is expected to sit out a second straight game Sunday, while Tallinder will miss his third in a row.

New Jersey is playing two straight and four of its next five games in Newark, where the Devils are 7-3-2 as the host this season.

Report: Panthers ask Jordan Gross to re-work contract

Well, at least the Carolina Panthers don’t play favorites. The franchise is an equal-opportunity cap slasher.

Chris Gamble, the organization’s all-time leader in interceptions and third-longest tenured player, was released Friday.

Center Ryan Kalil, tight end Greg Olsen and free safety Haruki Nakamura all were asked to restructure their deals.

Now offensive tackle Jordan Gross, the team’s second-longest tenured player, is being asked to do the same, two league sources told the Charlotte Observer’s Joseph Person.

“There’s two sides to football – the football side and the business side,” Gross told Person. “In the offseason, you deal with the business side.

“Right now, the Panthers and I are trying to work out the best solution to help this team move forward.”

Gross, 32, was the No. 8 overall pick in 2003 and has two Pro Bowls (2008, 2010) on his resume. He has a base salary of $8.7 million in 2013 and $6.7 million in 2014 (the final year of his deal.) As is, Gross will count $11.7 million against the cap in 2013 – the second-highest on the team behind Charles Johnson‘s $13 million. The restructured deals for Kalil and Olsen did not subtract from their overall pay. Nakamura, who lost his starting job, took a $500,000 hit on his re-worked deal.

Former NFL scouts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks join former NFL defensive end Akbar Gbajabiamila and host Matt “Money” Smith, with each unveiling their latest mock draft each week. More …

If those are indicators, Gross might have some money moved around and/or converted to a signing bonus. Either way, Gross doesn’t want to go anywhere else.

“I’ve given 10 years to the Panthers, and the Panthers have given 10 years to me,” said Gross, who has missed just nine games in 10 years and is the franchise leader in career starts. “And nobody wants this organization to win more than I do.

“I’d love to be a part of the equation for success in 2013. This is just something that has to get worked out.”

Maple Leafs look to bounce back against Penguins on TSN Radio

(Sports Network) – The Toronto Maple Leafs look to bounce back from a tough loss to the Boston Bruins when they host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight.

Listen to the game on TSN Radio 1050 in Toronto and TSN.ca/Toronto with coverage starting at 6pm et.

The Maple Leafs had won three straight before losing Thursday in Boston. Tyler Seguin scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and later sealed the win with an empty-netter, as the Bruins downed Toronto, 4-2, at TD Garden.

Nazem Kadri and Jay McClement each scored for the Maple Leafs, who dropped their eighth straight meeting against Boston. Ben Scrivens gave up three goals on 24 shots.

“We deserved a better fate,” Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle said. “We did a lot of good things in the game, and I want us to build on that as a team.”

Kadri has reached the scoresheet in seven straight games, matching Kunitz for the longest current point streak in the NHL. Kadri has six goals and five assists during his run.

Toronto has won its last two games at home, upping its record at the ACC this season to 6-5-0.

The Penguins will take aim at a fourth straight victory tonight.

Chris Kunitz enters Saturday’s game with a red-hot stick, having scored seven times during a five-game goal streak. He also has eight goals and four assists on an seven-game point tear.

Kunitz scored twice in Thursday’s 5-4 comeback win at Philadelphia, giving him 14 goals this season and leaving him one shy of James Neal, who leads the club with 15.

Pittsburgh trailed 4-1 after the first period on Thursday, but scored the game’s final four goals to grab two points. Kunitz provided the go-ahead score early in the third period.

Pascal Dupuis added a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who avenged a 6-5 loss to Philadelphia in Pittsburgh on Feb. 20 and took a 2-1 lead in the season series. Neal and Tyler Kennedy also lit the lamp, while Sidney Crosby had three assists to push his point streak to six games.

Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury gave up four goals on 18 shots and was pulled after the first period. Tomas Vokoun made 14 saves over the final two frames.

“I certainly liked how we came out and played,” said Pens head coach Dan Bylsma. “I think we’ve talked about the emotions in a game against the Flyers and we didn’t play very well in the first. We came out and stuck with it. We just got to our game, started playing, started coming after them and started playing a whole lot better.”

The Pens are 10-4-0 as the road team this season, but they’ve dropped three straight in Toronto. The only meeting between the clubs this season was in Pittsburgh on Jan. 23 and the Maple Leafs recorded a 5-2 victory in that one. Toronto has won four of six overall in this series.

Anquan Boldin reportedly given ultimatum by Ravens

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin said he would retire if released by the Baltimore Ravens. Well, it looks like he’ll either take a pay cut or hang up the cleats.

Harrison: Team needs in free agency

With free agency set to kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 12, Elliot Harrison identifies priorities for all 32 NFL teams. More …

The Ravens have asked Boldin to reduce his $6 million base salary. He’ll be released if he declines, according to FoxSports.com’s Alex Marvez. Boldin counts $7.5 million against the cap.

There’s not much optimism, as sources told the Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson, “Unless something dramatic happens, it’s an absolutely done deal that Anquan will be released.”

Boldin has been a perfect fit in Baltimore. He’s been the sure-handed, crisp route-running complement to Torrey Smith‘s deep threat. Boldin caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl and had 65 receptions for 921 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season.

The Ravens are working for cap room, but the three-time Pro Bowl selection might have the strongest hands in the league — even at 32 years old. The offense will miss Boldin if an agreement isn’t reached. Jacoby Jones is next on the depth chart.

It’s hard to imagine that Boldin would actually retire, considering he would be a legit top-two receiver on most teams.

UPDATE: Boldin told USA Today on Saturday that he “loves” the Ravens, but said he doesn’t want to take a pay cut.
