Karstens pleased with progress from tendinitis

By Tom Singer / MLB.com | 03/08/2013 8:13 PM ET

BRADENTON, Fla. — Jeff Karstens made 34 pitches in a two-inning session Friday afternoon at Pirate City — the second frame without a protective L-screen in front of him on the mound — and was pleased with how he felt, especially given that it was his second simulated turn in four days.

“Absolutely, that was significant for me,” Karstens said. “I was able to make adjustments in the second inning, mixing in more breaking pitches. And it was great to pitch without the screen. That really got the competitive juices flowing.”

The plan is for Karstens to again lay low for a couple of days, then throw a bullpen session. The next step after that would be his Grapefruit League debut.

Karstens has been held back by a mild case of biceps tendinitis, with his inclusion in the season-opening rotation still in jeopardy. Even if he progresses without any setbacks, that first exhibition outing would not come earlier than March 14, only three weeks before the Bucs will need a No. 4 starter.

Karstens would only be beginning to stretch out his arm, of course. Pittsburgh’s other starters are already at the four-inning mark.

Mancini baffled by Richards woes

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says it is “strange” that Micah Richards is still not fit to return to first-team football for the club.

• Blog: City up for’t cup
• Preview: Man City v Barnsley

Richards, 24, has not played since injuring his knee against Swansea in October and has been limited to just four appearances this season.

Mancini had expected to have the right-back available again by now and, while Richards has started training on the pitch, the Italian is finding it frustrating.

“This is strange, I don’t how this is possible. We can’t do anything,” he said. “I hope that maybe in three or four weeks he’ll be ready. His knee was not 100%, he continues to work and now he has been working for two months.”

Richards is scheduled to start training with his team-mates in the next few days and could make his comeback at the end of March if he does not suffer any further setbacks.

Mancini added: “Maybe two or three weeks [when he's back]. From when he started to work with the team he needs another two weeks. I hope maybe he can start with the team next week.”

Captain Vincent Kompany is another defender who has been out for longer than expected and Mancini said the Belgium international would like to face Barnsley in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday, but will not feature in a bid to ensure he is fit to face Everton next week.

“Calf injuries are a big problem. If you don’t recover very well it can happen like it has with Vinnie,” he said. “Maybe he wants to play on Saturday because he always wants to play. But we can’t take this risk.”

Preliminary fan voting offers glimpse at All-Time March Madness leaders

Image 75th_mm_250x751.png

INDIANAPOLIS — NCAA.com, managed by Turner Sports, on Thursday previewed early results from voting for the All-Time March Madness Players, Team and Moment as part of the season-long celebration of 75 years of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Launched at www.ncaa.com/marchmadness earlier this year, the latest poll front-runners include two buzzer-beaters, an historic upset, a matchup of two of the game’s legends and a championship comeback for the ages in the best moments category; championship squads from four of the sport’s powerhouse programs across four decades in the best team category; and more than two dozen icons who dominated the collegiate game in various eras and only need one name to conjure memories of their greatness: Wilt, Oscar, Kareem, Walton, Magic, Michael, Christian and Carmelo.

The final results will be revealed exclusively on NCAA.com on April 5. In addition, the NCAA will honor the Top 15 All-Time March Madness Players, the Top All-Time March Madness Team, and the Top All-Time March Madness Moment on center court during the semifinal games of the Final Four on April 6 in Atlanta.

Seventy-five players, 25 teams and 35 moments were selected for voting. Based on the voting to date, below are the 30 players with the most votes from fans and NCAA experts, in alphabetical order:

Many of the 75 finalists are still in strong contention to make the final list. It includes players who are more than five decades removed from being college stars, Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four in the last decade, and many all-time greats in between. It’s great to see fan participation across the NCAA basketball nation with as many as 21 different schools that have a player in the mix.  And multiple players from historic programs like Duke, Houston, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina and UCLA are in contention. The good news for fans hoping to see their favorite players make the final cut is that there is still time to make sure their vote is counted.”

Fans can still cast their votes for their top players, team and moment through March 24 by visiting www.ncaa.com/marchmadness.

As a special incentive, fans have a chance to enter a sweepstakes at www.ncaa.com/marchmadness to win an NCAA Final Four package, including tickets to attend the 2014 Men’s Final Four in Arlington, Texas.

Online fan votes will solely determine the All-Time March Madness Team and the All-Time March Madness Moment, and votes from participating NCAA basketball experts will be combined with fan votes to help determine the Top 15 All-Time March Madness Players. The list of NCAA basketball experts invited to vote consist of: the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the College Sports Information Directors of America, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, current and former members of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, the Final Four Coaches Club (coaches who have coached in previous Final Fours) and the NCAA media partners Turner and CBS.

NCAA.com also features an interactive timeline, including rare photos, videos and stories from each year of the NCAA tournament’s rich history. Additionally, the innovative presentation includes bracket results for every NCAA tournament game ever played.

Senators conclude five-game road trip in the Big Apple on TSN

(Sports Network) – The Ottawa Senators conclude their five-game road swing this evening with a stop in the Big Apple for a date with Rick Nash and the New York Rangers.

Catch all the action live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV at 7pm et/4pm pt.

The Rangers haven’t had any recent success at home versus the Senators, who have won their last five trips to Madison Square Garden and haven’t lost there since Oct. 3, 2009. They have won three straight and five of their last six overall versus the Blueshirts, including a 3-2 shootout win at home on Feb. 21.

That victory was part of a five-game road trip for the Senators, but they have gone 0-2-2 since, with all four losses coming on the road. They conclude their five-game swing with this game and now sit at just 3-7-2 as the guest this season.

Ottawa found itself down 3-0 early against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday and couldn’t rally despite scoring three goals in the third period, dropping a 5-4 decision.

Daniel Alfredsson scored with 7:52 to play and Colin Greening made it a one- goal game with less than two minutes to go. Zack Smith added a goal and an assist, while Mika Zibanejad also lit the lamp.

“We played good at the end there, but the hole we had dug ourselves was too deep,” said Alfredsson. “They were getting a lot of pressure on us early and by the time we figured it out we were down by three goals.”

Ben Bishop gave up all five goals on 28 shots in the loss as No. 1 netminder Craig Anderson remains out with a sprained right ankle that was sustained versus the Rangers.

Robin Lehner will get the start for the Sens tonight, his third of the season and 13th of his career. He has given up four goals on 81 shots in a pair of post-regulation losses this season.

For the Rangers, Nash looks to extend his goal-scoring streak and help New York win a fifth straight game.

New York dropped a season-worst four straight (0-3-1) from Feb. 19-26, with Nash missing all four of those games due to injury. The 28-year-old forward has been on fire since his return, scoring in all four games with five goals in that span.

Not surprisingly, the Rangers have won all four to post their longest winning streak of the season and Nash was clutch again on Thursday night against the New York Islanders.

The big winger scored a game-tying goal with 5:23 left in regulation and then assisted on Marian Gaborik‘s power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 win. Nash now has 13 points in the past eight games he has played in and the first-year Ranger leads New York with 20 points.

Even more impressive is that all eight of Nash’s goals this season have come in the third period.

“The great part about Nash right now is his third periods are his best period. That’s a good sign for conditioning. He’s been a huge part to our club here. As advertised, he’s been a game-breaker for us here. Hopefully it will continue,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella.

“I think he has a mindset that he respects the responsibility. He doesn’t say crap, doesn’t speak, he just goes out and plays.”

Nash set up Gaborik’s first goal in nine games, while Derek Stepan added two assists and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27-of-28 shots faced.

Roman Hamrlik made his Rangers debut after being claimed off waivers from the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. He replaced Marc Staal, who is out indefinitely after being struck in the right eye by a puck in Tuesday’s win over Philadelphia. Brad Richards also missed his second straight game due to a sore neck and back stemming from an illegal hit by Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta on Sunday.

However, the Rangers still won for just the third time in eight road games this season and are looking to win five straight for the first time since Dec. 30-Jan. 10 of last season. They are 9-4-1 at home in 2013.

New York will try for the same discipline tonight as it finishes off its third set of back-to-back games this season and first since Jan. 23-24. The Rangers have lost the second game in both of those back-to-back sets.

Nuggets win seventh straight, rout Clippers 107-92 (Yahoo! Sports)

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets routed the surging Los Angeles Clippers 107-92 on Thursday night, riding 21 points from Ty Lawson and 20 from Danilo Gallinari to their 12th straight home win.

Seven Nuggets scored in double figures as Denver won its seventh straight overall and improved to 27-3 at home, tied with the Miami Heat for best in the NBA.

Despite 19 points from Matt Barnes and 17 from Blake Griffin, the Clippers saw their five-game road winning streak come to an end.

More importantly, they lost the season series to the Nuggets 2-1, a tiebreaker that could come into play if Denver can catch them for the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Right now, the Nuggets are in fifth, behind Memphis.

Before tip-off, Nuggets coach George Karl was asked about facing one of his favorite players, Chauncey Billups, his former point guard who was dragged into the Carmelo Anthony trade a couple years ago.

”I hope he has a good game,” Karl said, ”and I hope we win.”

The Nuggets, who last won a dozen straight at home in 2005, got the best of Billups in his latest homecoming. He scored eight points.

Karl also said his goal was three-fold: ”I’d like to win the turnover game, I’d like Chris Paul to be just good and not great and at the end of the night we have the same amount of 3-pointers as they do.”

Both teams had 11 turnovers, Denver outscored Los Angeles by a dozen points from long range and Paul was good, not great, scoring 16 points and dishing out 10 assists, one fewer than Lawson had.

A bucket by Griffin, who was coming off his third career triple-double, gave the Clippers a 60-59 lead before the Nuggets scored 20 of the next 24 points to grab control.

Andre Iguodala’s wide-open 3-pointer from the right elbow put Denver ahead 67-60. He added another 3, then fed Danilo Gallinari for a shot from the exact spot on the right side. A drive by Lawson and an alley-oop dunk by Gallinari made it 77-64 and forced a timeout.

The Clippers pulled to 85-75 heading into the fourth quarter but never got closer than eight before the Nuggets turned up the heat, outscoring them 13-2 on the fast break in the second half and stretching their lead to 18.

Jamal Crawford, who had a game-high 22 points in the Clippers’ win over Denver on Christmas Day, sat out with a sore left ankle that he injured Wednesday night in L.A.’s 117-101 win over Milwaukee in which he scored 25 points.

”His ankle is pretty swollen, pretty sore after the flight last night with the back-to-backs,” Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said.

Del Negro said the Nuggets could withstand the loss of Crawford because none of his players logged extensive minutes against the Bucks, and sure enough, the Clippers were every bit as fresh as the Nuggets, matching them on fast-break points at six each in the first half, which ended in a 49-49 tie.

Of any Nuggets opponent, the Clippers can counter Denver’s break-neck style. But the Nuggets began to beat them on the break in the second half.

NOTES: Denver is 27-11 against Western Conference teams. … The Clippers have won six of the last nine games against the Nuggets. … Billups is still a beloved figure in Denver, where he grew up. Said Karl: ”I just think Chauncey’s a winner, he’s a class human being, he cares about the game, he cares about the city of Denver, he’s just one of those guys that whenever he retires, I’m sure we’ll want him back here, I’m sure the Nuggets will figure out how he’ll be a part of the Nuggets if he wants to be a part of the Nuggets.”

NEW YORK — Kevin Durant had 34 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 1:38 left, and the Oklahoma City Thunder pulled out a 95-94 victory over the New York Knicks on Thursday night.

Russell Westbrook struggled over the final three quarters but finished with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in the Thunder’s first trip to New York since Dec. 22, 2010. Durant also had eight boards and six assists.

Oklahoma City posted its third straight win, fighting off a spirited effort by a Knicks team missing All-Star Carmelo Anthony.

J.R. Smith scored a season-high 36 points for the Knicks, but missed a turnaround jumper that would have won it as time ran out.

Anthony missed his second straight game with what the Knicks said is a stiff and sore right knee.

Franco makes his pitch to promote All-Star festivities

By Zachary Finkelstein / MLB.com | 3/7/2013 9:56 P.M. ET

The owner of 424 saves — fourth-most of all time — John Franco was one of baseball’s best closers for much of a 21-year career that spanned parts of three decades (1984 to 2005). A member of the Mets in 14 of those campaigns, the left-hander appeared in more regular-season games (1,119) than all but two hurlers in history.

On Wednesday, for the first time, Franco toured the MLB Fan Cave as part of his pitch to promote the MLB All-Star FanFest and Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, two slices of the sport’s All-Star summer pie.

“Growing up in New York City as a kid, seeing all the All-Star Games all over the country, now [with the festivities] being here at Citi Field this July, with a chance to participate in it and have some fun … It’s a thrill to be a part of,” Franco said.

FanFest tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10 a.m. ET online at MLB.com and mets.com, at the Citi Field Box Office or by calling 888-326-3378.

An interactive theme park for fans of all ages, FanFest will transform Manhattan’s Javits Center into a celebration that captures the thrills and excitement of Major League Baseball. Visitors will be able to enjoy exhibits from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, batting cages, free autograph sessions with former Mets and Major League legends, and memorabilia. The extravaganza will run from July 12-16, when baseball’s best are set to converge on New York City for the 84th Midsummer Classic.

Franco will be there, looking to mingle with those who have bled blue and orange throughout the years.

“I’ll be doing various functions that they have lined up for me,” he said. “I’ll be going to the Javits Center, probably doing some clinics, signing some autographs.”

On Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, Franco will suit up alongside former big leaguers and beacons of the entertainment industry for the All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game. Prior to playing, he will watch the sport’s stars of tomorrow during the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.

A four-time All-Star, Franco has not forgotten how it feels to be recognized as one of the sport’s superlative performers.

“The first time, it’s a thrill being selected by your peers and other coaches and managers in the National League,” he said. “It’s just a thrill to be there when you are amongst the best players in the game at that particular time or season, to be part of something you’ll never forget. You always dream as a kid of making an All-Star team. It’s a pretty big achievement.”

During his Fan Cave tour, Franco helped shoot a pair of promotional videos created to encourage interest in both FanFest and All-Star Sunday.

Before departing he sat down to chat with fans on Facebook. Answering frankly, he revealed the current relievers with whom he is most impressed (closers Craig Kimbrel and Mariano Rivera) and the hitters who caused him the most trouble — Tony Gwynn (18-for-52, .346) and Mariano Duncan (10-for-20, .500).

He also indicated a desire to coach at the big league level one day. His unofficial résumé includes a line about his time with the travel team of his son, J.J., whom the Mets drafted out of high school in the 42nd round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

J.J. now plays second base for Brown University, and Franco is relishing his job as a full-time father.

“I travel around the country watching him play,” he said. “I enjoy it. Time goes fast; I can remember him starting as a freshman in college, and now he’s in his junior year. I just enjoy my time being away with my family and watching my son play ball.

A beloved member of the Mets family and the franchise’s Hall of Fame as well, Franco expects that he will have a full plate of duties come All-Star time.

“I am sure there are going to be quite a bit of opportunities,” he said. “Obviously, going around, probably doing [baseball] clinics, various speaking engagements, autograph sessions. I should have a lot of fun doing it.”

Sources: ‘America 12′ likely name for Big East

Updated: March 7, 2013, 2:21 PM ET

By Brett McMurphy | ESPN

The “America 12 Conference” is the favorite to become the new name of the current Big East Conference’s football schools, league sources told ESPN.

The name has not officially been approved by the league’s presidents. The conference also is considering several other names, sources said.

However, Covington & Burling, the conference’s law firm, purchased and registered the domain name “America12.org” on Tuesday.

The Big East’s law firm also registered other variations of America 12 on Tuesday, including America12Conference.com, America12Sports.com, American12.org, American12conference.com, AmericaTwelve.com and TheAmerica12Conference.com.

With the Catholic 7 schools leaving the league on June 30 to start a new conference and keeping the Big East name, the current football schools must have a new conference name by July 1.

The Big East football universities are not expected to add a 12th school until 2015, when Navy joins. It will have 10 members in 2013, and East Carolina and Tulane will replace departing Louisville and Rutgers the following year.

Sources said Tulsa is the only school the league is considering to become its 12th member. It hasn’t been determined yet if the Golden Hurricane would be invited to join in 2014 or 2015, sources said.
