Edmonton Oilers score 4 times in first, hang on to beat Chicago Blackhawks 6-5

CHICAGO – Sam Gagner scored two of Edmonton’s four goals in the first period and the Oilers beat Chicago 6-5 on Sunday night, sending the Blackhawks to their second consecutive loss after their record-breaking start.

Ryan Whitney and Taylor Hall each had a goal and an assist for Edmonton, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Captain Shawn Horcoff also scored as the Oilers went 3 for 4 on the power play.

Chicago set an NHL record by recording at least one point in the first 24 games of the season. The streak ended with a 6-2 loss at Colorado on Friday night, and coach Joel Quenneville said he was looking forward to seeing how his team responded.

The Blackhawks then got off to their worst start of the season before putting together a spirited rally.

Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Sheldon Brookbank and Brent Seabrook scored during a wild second period, and Kane added his team-best 14th of the season to get Chicago within one with 13 minutes left.

Smith eager to contribute to A’s crowded outfield

By Tyler Emerick / MLB.com | 3/10/2013 9:19 P.M. ET

PHOENIX — Last season in an outfield core of five players, Seth Smith was fourth on the depth chart, with Jonny Gomes bringing up the rear.

But with the designated hitter slot, the crowded outfield did not feel so congested. Smith appeared in 125 games in 2012, coming off the bench on just 24 of those occasions.

This season, however, with Gomes in Boston, Smith figures to drop a spot on the totem pole behind Chris Young, whom the A’s acquired in the offseason from Arizona.

Yet even with a measurably diminished role on the horizon, Smith still fits into his club’s plan for 2013, giving Oakland considerable depth in the outfield.

“I’m not 100 percent sure how it’ll play out, but we’ll find a way to get them all at-bats,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ll probably have a better idea as we get along.”

So far this spring, Smith has found himself on base more than half the time he has come to the plate, batting 8-for-16 with three walks. He singled and drove in a run Sunday against the D-backs.

“I’m pleased with everything so far,” Smith said. “I’m moving in the right direction, and everything is building up to April 1.”

Smith is not sure what to credit for his hot start to A’s camp, but even if the hits were not coming, he would still feel confident with where he is at this point.

“There’s really nothing to read into it, results-wise,” he said. “You can look at someone’s swing and see where they are, but as for batting averages, they don’t mean anything. I hit just enough in the offseason where I felt like I wouldn’t get injured when I got to Spring Training. You just take it from there. The pitchers are trying to find their stuff, so you see a lot of fastballs early on.”

Despite Smith’s modesty, the early success has come as little surprise to Melvin, who throws batting practice to Smith every day and has been impressed with his work ethic.

“He’s got power to all fields, and he’s a perfectionist in his preparations on the hitting end,” Melvin said. “If he hits two balls in batting practice where he doesn’t want to hit them, he gets upset. Whether it’s using the whole field a little more or looking for certain pitches, I think the reason behind that is he is always trying to get better.”

Last season, Smith batted just .240 in 383 at-bats and fought with himself to fix it, so this year he is trying to take the pressure off and not worry about every detail as much.

“I have kind of taken a less-is-more approach to this spring,” he said. “It seems to be putting my swing in a better spot, taking fewer swings but doing them with more purpose. I’ve found it to be rewarding.”

Regardless of what kind of playing time the 30-year-old sees in 2013, Smith appears OK with his role on the A’s moving forward.

“We have a really good outfield, and we have a lot of guys, but I know I’m part of this team,” he said. “We’ll be good.”

Don’t do work for the FA, Ferguson tells Rooney

Sir Alex Ferguson has said striker Wayne Rooney should stop doing promotional work for the Football Association when he is on England duty.

Premier League

AssociatedRooney is ‘too trusting’, his manager has said

The Manchester United boss said 27-year-old Rooney was “too trusting” because the FA punished him “more than anyone else in the game” if he stepped out of line.

He told the Sunday Express he “wouldn’t do a thing” for the FA and said: “I keep telling him he’s too trusting.

“I told him: ‘I don’t know why you do things with the FA.’ He does things every time he goes down there. He should not be doing anything with them.

“They’ve not helped him one bit. Every time he does anything [wrong], they punish him more than anyone in the game.

“He should be realising that. I wouldn’t do a thing for the FA but they force him to do it.”

Last week, Ferguson denied that there was any rift between him and Rooney after leaving the forward on the bench for the Champions League defeat against Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

His decision not to start Rooney sparked speculation that the player could be on the move at the end of the season.

But Ferguson said he wanted to see Rooney staying at Old Trafford, adding: “There’s no issue with his contract – when it has to be renegotiated it will be.

“We don’t want players to leave. He’ll definitely be here next season, there’s no doubt about that.”

AVB: We will ruin Reds’ top-four hopes

Andre Villas-Boas is hoping to end Liverpool’s hopes of a top-four finish when Tottenham travel to Anfield on Sunday, insisting his side will not be weakened following their midweek Europa League fixture.

• Preview: Liverpool v Tottenham
• Fitch: Few teams can match Spurs

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez urged his team-mates to make the most of their clash with third-placed Spurs and move closer to Champions League football next season, but Villas-Boas believes that dream will be ended if the Reds do not claim three points.

“They are 10 points off fourth place,” he said. “Will we end their chances if we beat them? You never really know but I think so, yes.”

Spurs easily despatched of Inter Milan 3-0 in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie on Thursday, giving them only two days rest ahead of the trip north.

Liverpool were given an extra period of rest after being knocked out of Europe last round, although the Tottenham boss does not expect that to give his opponents the upper hand.

“I’m not sure it will. Liverpool wanted to win the Europa League too,” Villas-Boas said. “The fact they are out and have to see other teams doing so well will be despairing. Our legs may be a little bit more tired but we can respond because we have done it in the past.

“We wanted to use it as an example for the Champions League in the future. So players get used to having to put in the effort in midweek and then again the following weekend.

“At the moment we have had success after most Europa League matches. The only negative results we’ve were at Manchester City and another I can’t remember.”

Tottenham have experienced a change in fortunes during the second half of this season and will move five points clear of Chelsea in third place if they can overcome Liverpool.

“Most of the players look at each other with pride and that’s what makes a real difference,” Villas-Boas said. All of them see they are going in the same direction, towards achieving success.

“That is what Jermain Defoe meant when he said everybody is on the same wavelength. All of the players are working for – and inspiring – each other.”

Yankees closer Rivera says this is final season (Yahoo! Sports)

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Saying he made the decision before arriving at spring training, Mariano Rivera announced Saturday that he will retire at the end of the season and hopes to cap his record-setting career by winning another World Series with the New York Yankees.

Rivera was surrounded by family and teammates when he made the announcement during a news conference at the team’s spring training complex.

The 43-year-old has a clear vision of how he wants his career to end.

”The last game I hope will be throwing the last pitch in the World Series,” he said. ””Winning the World Series, that would be my ambition.”

Rivera holds the career saves record with 608 and has helped the Yankees win five World Series titles. He is regarded as the greatest closer of all time, whether he’s throwing his cut fastball in the regular season or postseason.

With the entire Yankees’ team looking on – including longtime teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte – Rivera said he knew the time was right for his decision.

”I have just a few bullets left,” he said.

Rivera missed most of last year after tearing his right knee while shagging flyballs during batting practice in early May. Rivera said he would have retired at the end of last season if he had not gotten hurt.

”I didn’t want to leave like that,” he said. ”I felt like I wanted to give everything.”

He also said he wanted to give Yankees fans around the major leagues a chance to see him one more time, knowing this will be the end.

Rivera’s wife and two children were by his side for the news conference. He began by playfully thanking the Yankees for giving him a new contract for two additional years through 2015 – which would break a team policy of not negotiating new deals before the old ones expire.

”It’s not too easy when you come to a decision like this,” Rivera said, turning serious. ”After this year, I will be retired. … Now you’re hearing it from me. It’s official now.”

While others have proclaimed him the best closer in baseball history, Rivera wouldn’t put that label on himself.

”I don’t feel myself, the greatest of all time. I’m a team player,” he said. ”I would love to be remembered as a player who was always there for others.”

Rivera said he will miss being on the field but not the long travel and many nights in hotels. He will be the last player to wear No. 42 – retired for Jackie Robinson by Major League Baseball in 1997 but allowed to remain for players using it at the time.

”Being the last player to wear No. 42 is a privilege,” he said.

Rivera has not pitched in an exhibition game this spring training. He usually goes at his own pace in camp, working in the bullpen and throwing in simulated games – while avoiding bus trips to opponents’ spring ballparks.

The 12-time All-Star has earned a record 42 saves in the postseason while putting up an 0.70 ERA. He began his major league career in 1995 and has spent his entire time with the Yankees.

Rivera made just nine appearances last season before he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on May 3, and he had surgery on June 12. Rivera returned to his native Panama earlier this week on a personal matter.

As for the future, Rivera wants to take time off after this season to spend with his family. He envisions himself working in baseball, perhaps with minor leaguers.

”I definitely will be involved in the game some way, some aspect of the game,” he said.

Sabres LW Ville Leino near ready to make season debut from hip injury

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino could be ready to make his season debut as early as next week after missing the first 25 games with an injury to his right hip.

In ruling out Leino from playing at Philadelphia on Sunday, interim coach Ron Rolston called it a “strong possibility” he could play Tuesday, when Buffalo hosts the New York Rangers.

Leino practiced for a fourth straight day Friday. That’s a turnaround from last month, when there were concerns he was going to require surgery.

Rolston ruled out Andrej Sekera from playing Sunday, after the defenceman was hurt in the third period of a 3-2 shootout loss at New Jersey on Thursday. Defenceman Jordan Leopold is close to returning after missing eight games with an upper body injury.

Denard Robinson plans to throw at Michigan pro day

Michigan quarterback and future NFL Swiss Army knife, Denard Robinson, is getting healthier and plans to throw at his pro day on March 14.

Robinson, who suffered nerve damage to the elbow on his throwing arm just over four months ago, Skyped into “NFL AM” Friday morning and said that while he is “a receiver all the way” at the NFL level, he will throw a few passes at Michigan’s pro day to show scouts how much he has healed.

“I’m probably 70, 60 percent right now and it’s getting better and better,” Robinson said. “Every day I feel like it’s getting better. From the Senior Bowl to now it’s like night and day. I feel like I can grab things and be able to throw the ball like I want to…it feels better now to grip.”

Coming out of the Senior Bowl many scouts expressed concern about his ability to catch the ball, but his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine might have alleviated some of those trepidations, which might have been explained away by the injury, not poor hands.

Robinson could become a dynamic player as a wide receiver, returner, runner and even a Wildcat-option quarterback in certain sets.

Playing at a new position isn’t the only thing that could change for Robinson when he enters the NFL. Robinson’s moniker as “Shoelace” might have to be adjusted. He said Friday he might end up tying up his laces, as he did at the combine.

“I tell you this, if I get fined for the first time, I’m not doing it anymore, I’ll tell you that much,” he said. “I can’t lose that much money, getting fined is not something I want to be a part of and I don’t want to be a trouble maker at all. So if they tell me I have to tie them up, I’m tying them up.”

Mike Mayock: EJ Manuel second-best QB in NFL draft

Is EJ Manuel the second-best quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft? According to NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, that’s exactly what he is.

Mayock released the third edition of his position-by-position draft prospect rankings Thursday, and the biggest head-turner came under center, where Manuel, the Florida State passer, shot up to No. 2 behind West Virginia’s Geno Smith.

When Mayock released the second edition of his list on the heels of the NFL Scouting Combine, Manuel wasn’t even in the top five.

Translation: Welcome to the silly season.

Manuel’s rise dropped USC’s Matt Barkley to No. 3 and N.C. State’s Mike Glennon to No. 4 among passers. Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones are now tied at No. 5.

Manuel is an ascending prospect. The 6-foot-5, 237-pounder gained heavy experience in the shotgun at Florida State and impressed coaches with his arm at the Senior Bowl. He’s seen as one of the few quarterbacks in this draft physically equipped to operate out of the read-option. Manuel’s mobility is a major plus, but he’s widely seen as a raw talent. He’s easily the most intriguing quarterback of the bunch, and that’s the kind of player who often rises as April approaches.

At the same time, it has not been a banner week for Barkley. NFL Films guru Greg Cosell told NFL Network’s “Path To The Draft” that Barkley is a fourth-round talent being paraded around as a first- or second-round pick on draft boards.

“Number one, he has average arm strength by NFL standards,” Cosell said. “Number two, his feet are not particularly quick, he has slower feet. And three, he’s a little shorter.”

Manuel, meanwhile, has ideal NFL size; he can wing it; and his mobility is a separating quality. This quarterback group remains hazy, but it makes sense Manuel is starting to climb in the eyes of those who obsessively watch tape.

Cards SS Furcal to have Tommy John surgery

Updated: March 7, 2013, 10:22 AM ET

Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. — St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will have major surgery on his right elbow next week.

The team did not say in its statement Thursday how long the three-time All-Star will be out. Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist, examined Furcal Wednesday and will perform Tommy John surgery.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak will discuss Furcal’s status at a news conference at spring training Thursday.

The 35-year-old Furcal has been sidelined since reinjuring the elbow he hurt late last season. Furcal and the team had tried rehab rather than reconstructive surgery in the offseason.
