Ferdinand may face FA action over Torres incident

The Football Association may choose to take action against Rio Ferdinand after the Manchester United defender was involved in an incident with Chelsea striker Fernando Torres during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

Ferdinand and Torres

• Jolly: Rafa response earns replay

Ferdinand appeared to trip Torres over in the 86th minute before pushing him in the back as the striker got back up to his feet.

The FA will study the footage before making a final decision but Blues boss Rafa Benitez refused to comment on the altercation.

“I haven’t seen the replay – you can see the replay,” he said when asked for his response. “You have an advantage and can do it now.”

He added: “I don’t talk about things that happen on the pitch.”

Benitez confirmed that he had spoken to Torres about the incident but again refused to go into any details.

United scored two goals in the opening 11 minutes, however, they saw their lead slip as Chelsea fought back to force a replay in the second half.

“We gave them the impetus to claw their way back into the game. We played some great football at times but were so careless at times,” Ferdinand said. “If you are careless you are going to get punished. That was the case.

“But we are still in the cup. Wembley is waiting for one of us to go through and hopefully it is us. We go to Stamford Bridge for the replay with confidence. We have the tools. We have been there before this season and done well and with the squad we have we don’t fear going anywhere.”

Duke hammers UNC, could land overall No. 1 seed

Nine days after getting handled in Charlottesville to the point it prompted me to write this column, Duke has offered a pointed rebuttal of those (and any other) concerns.

The Blue Devils ripped arch rival North Carolina at the Dean Dome on Saturday night, 69-53, capping a weeklong run where they have shown that Ryan Kelly is just fine, that Seth Curry doesn’t need practice, and that everyone more than likely will be looking up at them on the NCAA’s seed list next Sunday. Not only will the Blue Devils be a No. 1 seed, but they have a very good chance at this point to be the overall No. 1 seed, which would lock them into a cozy Philadelphia/Washington D.C. path.

Duke still has not lost with Ryan Kelly in the lineup, and given how volatile everything else has been this season, that’s an extremely strong selling point. Kelly’s ability to stretch the floor and create space for Mason Plumlee is a huge piece of Duke’s offensive effectiveness and Kelly has been much better than advertised as a defender this season. But he’s not the whole story. Curry is capable of big nights (like tonight). Mason Plumlee also came strong in Chapel Hill, another good sign. Duke’s depth improved while Kelly was out, too.

No one’s unbeatable this season and Duke’s recent NCAA tournament history is dicey enough that its fans shouldn’t be booking tickets to Atlanta just yet, but no one’s managed to take them out so far when they’re whole.

Elsewhere in the championship week picture…

  • Valparaiso’s Ryan Broekhoff did this to Wisconsin-Green Bay to put the Crusaders into the Horizon final…… after Wright State had done this to defending tournament champion Detroit in the other semifinal:(h/t @CBTonNBC and @ESPN)
  • Belmont rallied from a late seven-point deficit to force overtime and then beat Murray State on a shot with 0.7 seconds left to win the Ohio Valley tournament and become the third team to qualify for the NCAA tournament (after Florida Gulf Coast, making its first-ever trip to the dance and Harvard, which again clinched off the court).
  • Loyola Marymount’s unexpected run in the WCC tournament ended in the semifinals at the hands of Gonzaga, which stretched a one-point halftime lead out into an eventual 66-48 win.
  • Losses by Kansas (at Baylor) and New Mexico (at Air Force) give Gonzaga an even greater possibility of nailing down a No. 1 seed in the NCAAs if they win Monday night’s WCC final.
  • The other team people need to be watching out for is Louisville, which grabbed a share of the Big East regular-season title today and is very much back in the discussion for a 1-seed depending on how the major-conference tournaments go.
  • Liberty (14-20) will be playing for the Big South auto-bid against Charleston Southern after upsetting Gardner-Webb in the semis.

Ferguson: Rooney not leaving United

Fergie dismisses Rooney rumours

Sir Alex Ferguson has said at his Friday morning press conference that Wayne Rooney will be at Manchester United next season.

Premier League

AssociatedRooney’s future has been the subject of conjecture this week

- Macintosh: Coming to terms

Delaney: Many questions remain

- Man United v Chelsea preview

Speculation over Rooney’s future at Old Trafford has been rife after he was not named in United’s starting XI for their Champions League exit against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The striker, who has scored 11 goals in 20 Premier League games this season, was introduced as a second-half substitute following the dismissal of Nani that helped swing the game in Real’s favour.

ESPN understands the club would be willing to listen to offers for the player this summer, but Ferguson has insisted the England international will be plying his trade at Old Trafford in the 2013-14 campaign.

Ferguson said to the assembled press ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final with Chelsea: “The Wayne Rooney issue first? Or do you want to talk sense?

“The issue you’re all going on about in the papers is absolute rubbish. I’ve banned two papers from the press conference and they won’t get back in here until they apologise.

“There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I. To suggest we don’t talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.

“He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical. And I think I was right. We don’t always get it right but I think we did get it right.

“Danny Welbeck is the best player we have in terms of operating in a double role. We had to choke Xabi Alonso’s ability to control the game, which Danny did, and that took away Alonso’s control of the game and his ability to go further forward and be an attacking player. We don’t always get it right but we definitely did on Tuesday.

“Wayne will be here next year. You have my word on that. I have no issues at all with the player and he’ll be involved on Sunday.”

Rooney, who signed for United from Everton for £20 million in 2004, inked a new five-year contract with the Red Devils in 2010, after announcing that he intended to leave the club amid concerns over the strength of their squad.

Manchester City have previously been mooted as potential suitors for Rooney as have affluent Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain, with the striker’s wages said to be in the region of £200,000-a-week.

Ferguson, though, appears to have ruled out a summer exit, despite numerous reports that the club would consider offers in excess of £25 million.

PHOENIX — Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in three runs, seven pitchers handcuffed United States hitters all night and Mexico rebounded from a disappointing opening loss with a decisive 5-2 win over the Americans in Pool D of the World Baseball Classic on Friday.

Coming off a last-inning loss to Italy, Mexico (1-1) tagged U.S. starter R.A. Dickey for four runs in the first three innings, including a two-run homer by Gonzalez in the third.

Yovani Gallardo got Mexico off to a good start with 3 1-3 solid innings and Luis Cruz had two RBIs to give a boisterous, pro-Mexico crowd of 44,256 plenty to cheer about at Chase Field.

Team USA (0-1) never recovered after Dickey’s early struggles, managing six singles among its eight hits while stranding eight runners in opening the WBC with a dud.

Kiprusoff solid in return as Flames defeat Sharks

CALGARY — It looked like vintage Miikka Kiprusoff on Wednesday night.

The 36-year-old Calgary goaltender made 32 saves in his return from a sprained knee to lead the Flames to a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

“We played a really strong game,” said Kiprusoff, who missed 13 games over a four-week span. “You know with a team like that, at some point they’re going to get shots, but we were able to play smart. We knew they were going to open up and we were going to get some chances.”

Blake Comeau scored a tiebreaking goal early in the third period while Jarome Iginla, Roman Cervenka and Curtis Glencross, into an empty net, also scored for Calgary (9-8-4), which improved to 4-1-1 in its last six games.

Joe Thornton scored the lone goal for the Sharks (11-7-4), who are 2-6-1 in their last nine.

Kiprusoff was injured in the second period of Calgary’s 4-1 victory over the Red Wings on Feb. 5. Calgary went 6-5-2 during his absence.

He was busiest in the third as the Sharks had the period’s only two power plays and outshot Calgary 17-6, but couldn’t solve the Finn, whose NHL career began as a Shark 12 years ago Tuesday when he was first recalled from the minors.

“I felt that he was solid right from the get-go,” said Flames coach Bob Hartley. “He was seeing all the pucks and that’s such a good feeling for guys on the bench, for coaches, and probably for fans.”

Calgary took a 2-1 lead at 2:57 of the third when Comeau burst down the right wing and snapped a shot inside the far post, past San Jose goalie Thomas Greiss.

It was Comeau’s first goal this season and just his second in the last 41 games, dating back to last season.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it a lot,” said Comeau. ” I feel like I’ve been getting chances all year but it’s almost like a snowball effect, two or three don’t go in and you start gripping you stick and maybe the confidence goes down a little bit.”

After scoring 24 goals two years ago with the New York Islanders, he notched just six goals last year and had just two assists heading into Wednesday’s game.

“I’m a competitive guy and I’ve scored some goals in the past, so obviously not getting off to the start I want this year was frustrating,” he said. “But I know there are other things I can bring to the game and other things I can try and do to help the team win.”

Iginla scored his sixth goal in the past five games less than two minutes later and that’s all the offence it would take against a Sharks team that has really struggled offensively of late.

Slumped in his locker, well after the game, Sharks defenceman Dan Boyle was searching for answers.

“It happens, you go through streaks where you’re not scoring and I understand that but …” said Boyle, shaking his head. “We just sucked right from the beginning.”

In the past 17 games, San Jose has scored more than two goals (excluding shootouts) just once, which came in a 5-3 loss. That comes on the heels of scoring no less than four goals each of the first five games of the season.

“We got some chances tonight but didn’t put the puck in the net,” Boyle said. “The power play’s got to come through with a goal and they didn’t.”

Thornton’s goal was only his second since Jan. 27.

“We’re disappointed,” said Sharks coach Todd McLellan. “We had an opportunity to win a game going into the third period and we didn’t play very well. I thought the Comeau goal was a bit of a backbreaker.”

The Flames got off to a good start, taking a 1-0 lead at 4:27, before the Sharks had put its first shot on Kiprusoff. Defenceman Jay Bouwmeester had his shot stopped by Greiss, but the rebound kicked out to Cervenka, who promptly buried it for his first goal in nine games.

Greiss was making his first start for the Sharks in 10 games with Anntti Niemi getting the night off after defeating the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night. He finished with 22 saves on 25 shots.

San Jose’s power play has been an issue of late. After going 0-for-4 against Calgary, they are 3-for-42 in the last 10 games.

Calgary was 0-2 with the extra man.

The Flames now depart on a difficult California road trip. They play once in Anaheim then two straight in Los Angeles against the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings.

Notes: During the second intermission, a fan stripped down to his boxers and strutted across the ice, making it from one all the way to centre before security escorted him off the icea Hartley collects win No. 338, tying him with Michel Bergeron for 39th on NHL all-time lista It was the ninth anniversary of the start of Bouwmeester’s iron man streak, which is 609 games, 6th longest all-time.

Elvis Dumervil pay cut wanted by Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos would like to do some business with defensive end Elvis Dumervil.

NFL.com’s Albert Breer reported Wednesday that Denver is attempting to negotiate a pay cut with Dumervil, according to a team source. Breer says the problem isn’t his cap number, even if it’s the team’s second highest, at $13.623 million. The Broncos, rather, would like Dumervil to take a reduction in his $12 million salary.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Broncos have yet to approach Dumervil about a pay cut, according to a source who has spoken with the player. It’s likely that Dumervil would resist a pay cut, though he is open to restructuring. Dumervil currently is out of town on vacation.

The Broncos‘ plans first were reported by Vic Lombardi of KCNC-TV.

The club has the requisite space under the $123 million salary cap to deal with Dumervil’s cap hit this season. The cap numbers increasingly are workable over the two remaining years on his deal — $11.623 million next year and $9.816 million in 2015.

Offseason Forecast: Broncos
Around The League examines what’s next for all 32 teams. Chris Wesseling tackles Denver. More …

The issue here comes down to production vs. salary. Dumervil finished with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles last season, but his failures against the run and struggles with penalties appear to have given the Broncos second thoughts on the six-year, $61.5 million contract the sides agreed to in the summer of 2010.

If Dumervil, 29, ended up on the open market, he’d be sure to draw considerable interest.

Inspired by the recent recovery of his cousin, who was involved in a serious automobile crash, linebacker Von Miller on Tuesday guaranteed the Denver Broncos would win the Super Bowl next season.

Broncos LB Von Miller comments on his prediction that Denver will win Super Bowl XLVIII, losing to the Ravens in the playoffs and more.

More Podcasts »

He initially posted his thoughts on Twitter, and then explained his thought process in an interview Tuesday with “The Herd With Colin Cowherd” on ESPN Radio.

“You can post this where ever.. Denver broncos will win the Super Bowl 2013 #4UJEREMIAH #IGUARANTEEIT58 if you are with us Retweet,” he tweeted earlier Tuesday.

That tweet came after another tweet where he announced that his cousin Jeremiah had emerged from a coma.

This is why we win the Super Bowl 2013. My little cousin Jeremiah came out of a coma frm a car wreck In west Tx I [love] U,” he wrote.

In the interview with ESPN Radio, he went into more detail about his cousin’s recovery, explaining his boast wasn’t about him “being cocky” but that his cousin had motivated him to make the bold guarantee.

“I was motivated by my younger cousin … he got in a wreck about a week ago and he just came out of a coma a couple of days ago,” he said. “His first couple of words was, they asked him a couple of questions and, of all the stuff to remember, he remembered that his cousin played for the Denver Broncos and his name was Von Miller.”

That was enough to fire Miller up for the upcoming season.

“It just moved me and I’m motivated and I’m going to work extremely hard. Not like I haven’t done it before, but this year it’s just a little bit extra for me and I’m extremely motivated,” he said.

When he was asked how Peyton Manning will react to his guarantee, Miller said he doesn’t think his quarterback will mind.

“I think he already has a personal guarantee with himself,” he said. “I’m not speaking for anybody else, I’m speaking for me and the work I’m going to do and the work I’m putting in this year, but I bet I have some guys in the locker room that’s willing to work with me and take the path I’m willing to take.”

The Broncos entered the playoffs last year as the No. 1 seed in the AFC, buoyed by Manning’s Comeback Player of the Year season, but lost to the eventual-Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in overtime after allowing a deflating 70-yard tying touchdown reception by Jacoby Jones with 31 seconds remaining in regulation.

Miller set a Broncos record last season with 18.5 sacks.
