Mertesacker laments weary Arsenal

Per Mertesacker has lamented Arsenal’s lack of concentration in the first half of matches this season which he claims has prevented them from cementing a top four position.

PA PhotosMertesacker is ready for a crucial week of Arsenal’s season

Mertesacker, 28, admits the Gunners wasted an opportunity to move closer to securing Champions League football for next season after a 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the North London derby on Sunday.

Goals for Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon within the space of three minutes left Arsenal reeling as they headed into the break at White Hart Lane, meaning Arsene Wenger’s side have now conceded four first-half goals in their last three matches.

“We are disappointed because we looked good for the first 35 minutes,” Mertesacker said. “We’d been solid at the back, high up, but then we couldn’t manage both situations where they scored.

“I thought we were good in the beginning but we need to maintain that level and that’s what we are lacking all the time, that consistency over 90 minutes – or at least to keep a clean sheet for the first 45 minutes.

“That was our first target. We switched off, we expected there to be a foul called on someone but you can’t switch off at any time in the game.”

Arsenal have a much-needed gap ahead of their Champions League round of 16 second-leg tie against Bayern Munich and Mertesacker believes the rest gives him greater hope of overturning the 3-1 deficit.

“We need this breather now. We have 10 days until our next game so we can think about our situation,” he said. “Of course there is potential but we need to show that on the pitch.

“That’s what we need in the next few weeks, to go to Munich, to show responsibility for the Champions League. We have to take the chance there and afterwards we have to take care about the league and try to go for all points.”

Cowboys putting franchise tag on Spencer again (Yahoo! Sports)

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are putting the franchise tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer for the second consecutive season.

Spencer’s agent, Jordan Woy, wrote in a tweet Monday that the Cowboys and their sack leader from 2012 would work on a long-term contract. Spencer had a career-high 11 sacks last season.

Under the franchise tag in 2013, a player is paid according to a formula based on salaries for the past five years at the position and their percentage of the total salary cap.

With the non-exclusive tag, his team has the right to match any offer sheet, or get two first-round draft picks in return for allowing him to leave. An exclusive tag ties him to his current team at a higher, but as-yet-undetermined price, for one season.

The Cowboys also released safety Gerald Sensabaugh.

Cam Ward has MCL sprain, will miss 6-8 weeks

The Carolina Hurricanes will have to move on with Dan Ellis as their No. 1 goalie for the foreseeable future.

Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford announced Monday that goalie Cam Ward has been diagnosed with a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, which could take him to the end of the regular season.

Carolina leads the Southeast Division with 25 points, four more than Winnipeg in the same amount of games played (21).

Ward was injured midway through the second period of Carolina’s 3-2 win over Florida on Sunday. He is 9-6-1 with a 2.84 goals-against average and .908 save percentage this season.

Ellis, who replaced Ward on Sunday, has appeared in seven games and is 3-2-1 with a 2.53 GAA and .923 save percentage.

Burke’s defensive plays help Michigan beat MSU (Yahoo! Sports)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Trey Burke stole the ball from Keith Appling near midcourt and went in alone for a dunk with 22 seconds remaining, then made another steal in the final seconds to give No. 4 Michigan a pulsating 58-57 win over No. 9 Michigan State on Sunday.

The Spartans (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten) had the ball with the shot clock off at 56-all, but Burke’s first big defensive play enabled Michigan (24-5, 11-5) to take the lead. After Derrick Nix made one of two free throws and Mitch McGary missed the front end of a 1-and-1 for Michigan, Burke stole a pass by Gary Harris to end it.

The Michigan State loss clinches at least a share of the Big Ten title for Indiana.

The Wolverines avenged a 75-52 loss at Michigan State last month.

Burke had 21 points and eight assists. Michigan won despite going 0-for-12 from 3-point range, which seemed like an impossible turn of events after the defensively maligned Wolverines lost at Penn State on Wednesday night.

Michigan trailed 31-28 at halftime but shut down Michigan State for extended stretches and eventually took a 52-42 lead when Burke made two free throws with 4:36 to play.

The Spartans rallied behind relentless offensive rebounding. Michigan State had 19 offensive rebounds for the game, and the Spartans nearly won despite 18 turnovers.

Keith Appling pulled Michigan State even at 56 when he made two free throws with 54.8 seconds remaining, and when McGary stepped on the baseline, the Spartans had a chance to hold for the last shot.

Instead, they weren’t even able to get a play going. Burke gambled a bit, going for the steal, and he put the Wolverines ahead 58-56.

Nix was fouled with 8.8 seconds left, but he missed the first free throw. After he made the second, the Spartans fouled McGary, who couldn’t add to Michigan’s lead. Michigan State called a timeout with 4.9 seconds left but never got a shot off.

The Spartans have lost three straight – to Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan – and their tough stretch isn’t over. They face Wisconsin next.

Adreian Payne had 17 points and Harris added 16 for the Spartans.

With both teams desperately trying to maintain some hope of a league title after their recent struggles, this game was intense from the start. Payne, who had attempted only 20 shots from beyond the arc all season, made two 3-pointers in the early going.

Michigan freshman Nik Stauskas played only four minutes – he didn’t return after leaving with a cut over his left eye after a scramble for a rebound early in the game.

Canucks look to get back on track against red-hot Kings

(Sports Network) – The Vancouver Canucks look to avoid a season high- tying third straight loss when they take on the surging Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night .

The Canucks have lost two in a twice this season. They first did so from Feb. 15-19, though the last two defeats came in a shootout.

Cory Schneider will get the start in net for the Canucks against the Kings.

Vancouver has lost two straight in regulation however, losing by five goals in Detroit last Saturday before Tuesday’s 4-2 setback to the visiting Phoenix Coyotes.

Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin each scored once for the Canucks, who have dropped five of seven overall and three in a row at home. Schneider allowed three goals on 21 shots in the setback.

“We knew what to expect here and we just didn’t respond very well,” said Sedin. “They played exactly the way we thought they would and just couldn’t get anything going.”

Saturday will also mark the start of Ryan Kesler‘s second extended absence from the lineup. The forward missed the first 12 contests of 2013 due to shoulder and wrist surgery in the offseason and appeared in seven games before a CT scan on Wednesday discovered a fractured right foot.

Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters he did not know how much time Kesler would miss, though he said he expected the nine-year veteran to be out at least a month.

Vancouver has also played without defenseman Kevin Bieksa for two straight because of a strained groin.

With Kesler now sidelined, the Canucks claimed forward Tom Sestito off waivers from the Flyers on Friday.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Kings are trying to dig themselves out of a 3-5-2 start as they have won a season-high five straight games as well as seven of their past eight. That has them tied for second in the Pacific Division with both the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars, nine points back of the Anaheim Ducks.

Los Angeles looked in danger of falling into the loss column on Wednesday as it trailed the Detroit Red Wings for much of the game before rallying for a 2-1 win.

Jeff Carter scored during a 5-on-3 power play to tie the game with 9:34 to play before Anze Kopitar put home the winning goal with 4:48 remaining on the clock.

“I think we’re putting together a pretty good streak here, and we’ve got to keep it going,” said Kopitar, who has eight points over his last four games.

Carter, meanwhile, has scored a goal in five straight, one off his career-best streak set from Feb. 8-March 3, 2010 while with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Backup netminder Jonathan Bernier made 32 saves, 20 over the final two periods after giving up a first-period goal, to win his career-best fourth straight game.

Following a perfect three-game homestand, the Kings play in Vancouver before returning to Los Angeles for a five-game stay. They aim to do so with their first six-game winning streak since March 11-22 of last year.

The Kings have won three of their last four versus the Canucks, including a 3-2 shootout win on Jan. 28 in the first of three meetings this season. Carter had the winning goal in the bonus frame of that matchup in Los Angeles after also scoring during regulation.

The Canucks have won six of their past eight at home versus the Kings.

Chloe Green: Woman Who Won The Week [PHOTOS]

Image z-top.jpeg

We loved it when Eric Cartman’s hand stole a guy from J. Lo, so we certainly love Chloe Green for doing the same.

Granted, Marc Anthony didn’t cheat on J. Lo with Chloe the way Ben Affleck did with Cartman’s hand, and he had a girlfriend in between, but we’re not going to fuss over the details. We’re proud of you, Chloe.

We’re also proud of you because you’re not just being another useless heiress like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. You know how to shut the f–k up and not embarrass yourself, your family, and humanity in general. Oh wait…you do, but you do it in Britain so we don’t have to listen to it.

In that spirit, we’re presenting you to the world the way you like you best, in 2-dimensional, silent form.

Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens agree to new contract

It’s official, Joe Flacco isn’t going anywhere.

Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer reported the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms with the quarterback. He’s expected to sign the deal Monday.

The only question is: What are the numbers? The Ravens were prepared to franchise Flacco if a deal wasn’t completed by the start of free agency. There was no way they would let him hit the open market.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes he could sign the richest deal in NFL history. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees currently holds that distinction with a five-year, $100 million contract, including $60 million guaranteed, signed last year. Others think New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady‘s extension could force Flacco into a Ravens-friendly deal.

There are only seven starting quarterbacks in the NFL with a Super Bowl ring and Flacco is one of them. The numbers will be big and Flacco called it before the season when he said the price tag would only go up.

We’ll see how much it went up.

McIlroy walks off course at Honda Classic (Yahoo! Sports)

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Rory McIlroy abruptly walked off the course Friday at the Honda Classic and left everyone wondering what was wrong with golf’s No. 1 player.

McIlroy already was 7-over par through eight holes of the second round when he hit his second shot into the water on the par-5 18th at PGA National. He shook hands with Ernie Els and Mark Wilson and was headed to the parking lot before they even finished the hole.

”There’s not really much I can say, guys,” McIlroy told three reporters who followed him to his car. ”I’m not in a good place mentally, you know?”

He said there was nothing wrong physically. When asked about his swing, the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland replied, ”Yeah, I really don’t know what’s going on.”

About an hour after he left, McIlroy released a statement that attributed his withdrawal to a sore wisdom tooth.

”I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future,” McIlroy said. ”It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners.”

McIlroy apologized to the tournament, saying he had every intention of defending his title at the Honda Classic.

If his golf wasn’t shocking enough, the manner in which he left raised plenty of questions about the state of game – and his head – in the month leading to the Masters.

McIlroy, coming off a year in which he won a second major in record fashion, already set himself up for scrutiny when he left Titleist to sign an equipment deal with Nike that was said to be worth upward of $20 million a year.

Nike introduced him with blaring music and a laser show in Abu Dhabi, but it’s been all downhill from there.

McIlroy missed the cut in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship with rounds of 75-75. He took a four-week break, and then was eliminated in the opening round of the Match Play Championship to Shane Lowry in one of the most poorly played matches of the round.

McIlroy played 36 holes with Tiger Woods at The Medalist on Sunday and said Tuesday it was no time to panic.

”Even though my results haven’t revealed it, I really felt like I was rounding a corner,” McIlroy said. ”This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year and I regret having to make the decision to withdraw, but it was one I had to make.”

It looked more like McIlroy was sinking than rounding the corner, not difficult to do on a course with so many water hazards. And he found plenty of them.

McIlroy, who opened with a 70, hit two poor chips that led to double bogey on No. 11, and a wild tee shot to the right led to a bogey on the 13th. His round really unraveled on the par-4 16th, when he hit his tee shot to the right and into the water, took a penalty drop, and then came up short of the green and into the water again. He made a 6-foot putt for a triple bogey.

He three-putted from 40 feet, running his first putt about 10 feet by the hole, for a bogey to go 7 over. And then came the approach that found water for the third time of his short day on the 18th.

McIlroy is scheduled to play next week in the Cadillac Championship at Doral, which has no cut, and then the Houston Open. But on the first day of March, he has completed only four rounds of competition.

It was the second straight year one of golf’s biggest stars failed to finish a tournament on the Florida swing. Woods withdrew after 11 holes on the final round at Doral last year because of tightness in his Achilles tendon, raising questions about the seriousness of his recurring leg injuries. He won Bay Hill two weeks later.

McIlroy at least drove off from PGA National without a helicopter camera following him.
