Manchester United-bound forward Wilfried Zaha has apologised for making an obscene gesture during Crystal Palace’s meeting with Leeds United on Saturday.

Zaha, 20, was seen showing his middle finger to Leeds supporters as Palace played out a 2-2 draw with their Championship rivals at Selhurst Park.

The England international, who signed for the Red Devils in January before being loaned back to Palace for the remainder of the season, said his actions were “unprofessional”.

On that note I also wanted to apologise for the gesture I did towards the Leeds fans in yesterday’s game. Very unprofessional from me

Zaha has played in 35 of Palace’s 37 league games this season, scoring six times for the club he will leave in the summer after a fee in the region of £15 million was agreed in January.

St. Louis Rams will release Quintin Mikell, avoid cap hit

Around The League‘s Gregg Rosenthal listed St. Louis Rams safety Quintin Mikell as one of the NFC veterans on the roster bubble.

Three weeks later, a source informed of the impending move tells NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport that Mikell indeed will be released. The 32-year-old’s $6 million salary was due to count a prohibitive $9 million against the salary cap.

With the offseason under way, Around The League examines what’s next for all 32 teams. Chris Wesseling covers the Rams. More …

Mikell has plenty left in the tank, evidenced by his 101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles last season. The problem is that NFL teams are reluctant to pay big money to in-the-box safeties, which is why so many are losing their jobs this offseason.

That trend has been exacerbated by a flooded market at the position. With so many quality safeties available, the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans were unwilling to pay the franchise-tag rate for Dashon Goldson and Glover Quin, respectively.

The Rams will be in the market for a pair of starting safeties in the next week or two. Combined, they likely will earn less than Mikell was scheduled to pull down in 2013.

Boldin: Ravens haven’t asked for restructuring

Updated: March 9, 2013, 4:33 PM ET

ESPN.com news services

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who played a big role in Baltimore’s run to its second Super Bowl title this decade, tells ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Ravens have not asked him to restructure his contract.

Jamison Hensley believes the Ravens are wrong to play hardball with veteran Anquan Boldin, who was a key member in the club’s run to the Super Bowl. Blog

• AFC North blog

Boldin said on Saturday that Baltimore might have to do a restructuring of some sort, but to this point and his knowledge, the Ravens have not.

As for his future, Boldin told Schefter that he would speak with his family before he makes any decisions, but as far as he is concerned and knows, he is planning to play for Baltimore next season under the terms of his current contract.

Boldin is scheduled to earn $6 million in the coming season. He carries a $7.531 million salary-cap figure.

Fox Sports initially reported Saturday that Baltimore gave Boldin an ultimatum: Take a pay cut or get cut on Tuesday. USA Today Sports later reported that Boldin had rejected Baltimore’s offer but that the sides were still discussing the matter, and that Boldin is prepared to test free agency if Baltimore releases him.

ESPN and other media outlets have reported that the Ravens do want to reduce Boldin’s salary as they try to free cap space to retain free-agent linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.

The Ravens were expected to keep Boldin after the team didn’t have to use the franchise tag on quarterback Joe Flacco, who signed a six-year, $120.6 million deal.

In the playoffs, Boldin caught 22 passes for 380 yards receiving (95 yards per game) and four touchdowns. He has led Baltimore in receiving yards in each of the past three seasons since being traded from Arizona.

Boldin, 32, said last month that he would retire if he was cut by the Ravens. Since the Ravens won the Super Bowl, linebacker Ray Lewis and center Matt Birk have retired and Baltimore has released guard Bobbie Williams.

Information from ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley was used in this report.

James Harrison released by Pittsburgh Steelers

Linebacker James Harrison was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Saturday.

NFL.com’s Albert Breer previously reported via Harrison’s agent and a club source that the team was going to cut the veteran linebacker.

Saturday morning Harrison tweeted “Thank you Steelers Nation I will miss you all!”

“We have informed James Harrison that we have released him,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said in a team statement. “James has been an integral part of our success during his years in Pittsburgh and has helped us win two Lombardi trophies during that time. We appreciate all of his efforts and wish him the best.”

Harrison originally signed with the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2002. He started 95 of 131 games played for Pittsburgh and registered 64 sacks to rank fourth in franchise history. He was The Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 after recording a Steelers‘ record 16 sacks.

“James has played a major role in the success of this organization during his time in Pittsburgh. I appreciate everything he has done in my six years as head coach and wish him nothing but the best in the future,” Steelers Head coach Mike Tomlin said.

Harrison earned five consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl (2007-11) and was named All-Pro following three seasons (2007, ’08 and ’10). Harrison played in 12 postseason games with nine starts. He helped the Steelers win three AFC Championships and two Super Bowls. Harrison registered the longest interception return in Super Bowl history, a 100-yard touchdown in Super Bowl XLIII.

PHOENIX — Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in three runs, seven pitchers handcuffed United States hitters all night and Mexico rebounded from a disappointing opening loss with a decisive 5-2 win over the Americans in Pool D of the World Baseball Classic on Friday.

Coming off a last-inning loss to Italy, Mexico (1-1) tagged U.S. starter R.A. Dickey for four runs in the first three innings, including a two-run homer by Gonzalez in the third.

Yovani Gallardo got Mexico off to a good start with 3 1-3 solid innings and Luis Cruz had two RBIs to give a boisterous, pro-Mexico crowd of 44,256 plenty to cheer about at Chase Field.

Team USA (0-1) never recovered after Dickey’s early struggles, managing six singles among its eight hits while stranding eight runners in opening the WBC with a dud.

Lakers beat Raptors 118-116 in OT to go over .500 (Yahoo! Sports)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant hit the tying 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in regulation, then dunked for the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left in overtime, helping the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Toronto Raptors 118-116 on Friday night for their second straight come-from-behind win.

Two nights after rallying from 25 points down to win on the road at New Orleans, the Lakers came back from a 15-point deficit in regulation and a slow start in overtime to gain ground on Utah for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. They also moved a game above .500.

Bryant finished with 41 points and 12 assists, making 14 of 16 free throws, and Dwight Howard had 24 points and 13 rebounds.

DeMar DeRozan led six Toronto players in double figures with 28 points. Starter Andrea Bargnani left the game with a strained right elbow in the first quarter.

Beyak: Jets continue road success against Panthers

Winnipeg Jets 3, Florida Panthers 2 in overtime – With the win the Jets improve to 2-1 on this road trip, a trip that ends in New Jersey on Sunday night. (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Jets are now 7-2 in their last nine on the road and 7-3 in their last 10 overall. The game was the midway point of the 48-game schedule, with the Jets sitting at 12-11-1. Jets are now 3-1 in the second game of back to backs, an area they really struggled in last year.

The Jets got off to a good start with Andrew Ladd scoring his 13th to put Winnipeg in front early. Blake Wheeler with his eighth made it 2-0, but with seconds left in the first Jonathan Huberdeau got the Panthers on the scoreboard. Huberdeau leads all rookies in scoring and has scored in each of the four games against the Jets this season. There was no scoring in the second, with Shawn Matthias scoring at 5:50 of the third to tie game. The Jets were outshot 12-4 in the third but hung on and managed to get the game to overtime where Dustin Byfuglien was the hero. Byfuglien controlled the puck in the offensive zone, worked his way into the slot and beat Jacob Markstrom glove side to end the game. It was Byfuglien’s fourth goal of the season.

But the only reason the Jets won this game was the play of Ondrej Pavelec. He faced a season-high 40 shots, many of them terrific scoring chances as the Jets were very guilty of turnovers in their own zone. Whether it was glove saves or pad saves, Pavelec was the difference. This great goaltending performance came on the heels of Al Montoya‘s great game in Tampa.

Offence continues to be an issue for the Jets with a number of players way overdue. Offence from the back end has also slowed, a lot of that having to do with no Toby Enstrom, and the power play is creating chances, but not goals. However in the three games on this trip the Jets have only had three power plays.

The penalty killing is very good, as the Jets have now killed 21 of 21 over the past seven games, and is at 91 per cent in the last 10 games.

“Our goaltender was our best player,” stated Coach Claude Noel post game. “We didn’t manage the game very well, but we found a way to win.” On the overtime winner where the toe drag in the offensive zone was a bit of a gamble by Byfuglien, “he has the ability to do that. You have to allow him to be a difference maker. The game wasn’t the way we wanted to play. It wasn’t smooth, but we got it done. Our penalty kill is our bread and butter and when you get that kind of goaltending you can make the odd mistake and get away with it.”

Ladd has a three-game point streak going and has seven points (3-4-7) in his last five games. He has 13 points in 14 road games this season. Byfuglien finished the game with seven shots on goal and led the team in ice time at 27:26. Brian Campbell played 33:18 for the Panthers. Derek Meech and Chris Thorburn were again the healthy scratches.

The win pulls the Jets to within two points of Carolina for first place in the Southeast Division, and one back of the eighth-place New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference.

Dunta Robinson, Kansas City Chiefs agree to contract

It’s still unclear what sort of free-agency chatter we’re going to be subject to this weekend, but we can offer you this: The Kansas City Chiefs have landed a cornerback.

NFL.com’s Albert Breer reports that Dunta Robinson has reached an agreement with the Chiefs on a three-year deal, according to a source close to the player. The former Falcons defensive back was released by Atlanta earlier this month in a cap-saving move that slashed $9 million off the books. The Falcons also got rid of a largely disappointing performer.

Robinson — cut three years into the six-year, $57 million deal he signed in 2010 — struggled in coverage last season and figures as more of nickel defender for the Chiefs. He remains consistent against the run and could be worked into the mix at safety.

Robinson turns 31 in April, but the Chiefs, at least, have landed a relatively durable player. He started 46 of a possible 48 games for the Falcons after making 79 starts for the Texans during his six-year run in Houston.

Andy Reid likes importing veteran players and we’ve already seen that happen at quarterback. The Chiefs have some talent on defense. Robinson isn’t going to save the day, but he’s part of the plan for a new regime in Kansas City working to aggressively rethink the roster on both sides of the ball.
