Giroux, Gagne score as Flyers top Sabres, snap 3-game skid

PHILADELPHIA — Brayden Schenn made the save of the game for the Philadelphia Flyers. No goalie pads necessary, just pure hustle.

Schenn’s quick swipe at a free puck just before it crossed the line for the tying goal late in the third period was enough to help the Flyers snap a three-game losing streak and beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Sunday night.

Claude Giroux, Simon Gagne and Max Talbot all scored and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 18 shots for the Flyers (12-14-1), who are still on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

“We had confidence in our play and were positive on the bench and the room, so we had fun,” Giroux said. “We need to be confident in what we do out there.”

Trailing by a goal with 5:40 left, Cody Hodgson‘s shot slipped past Bryzgalov, positioned at the top of the crease. The puck inched its way toward the line when Schenn swooped in with a split-second lunge with his stick and cleared it for the save. Back on the bench, Schenn simply shrugged at the play.

Without it, the Flyers might have been in a deeper hole than they already are.

“I turned around to play defence and the shot deflected,” Schenn said. “I don’t know how close it was to the goal line, but to help Bryz out when I can is always a good feeling.”

The win kept the Flyers in striking distance for a playoff spot. They are ahead of the Sabres, who are buried in last place in the Northeast Division and have lost four straight. Brian Flynn and Jochen Hecht scored for Buffalo.

With both teams struggling, tempers were short. Buffalo’s Mike Weber slugged it out with Wayne Simmonds, and Sabres centre Steve Ott threw a punch at Kimmo Timonen.

Hecht scored early in the third to make it 3-2 and give the Sabres some life. But Schenn followed with the save.

The Flyers will take the stops however they come. They needed this one a day after a 3-0 loss at Boston. The Flyers held a closed-door team meeting after the game.

“It doesn’t take much to understand what’s going on,” Gagne said. “You look at the standings, and I think everyone came to the locker room today and looked at where we were at and how many games we have left. I’m not good at math but if you look at it we have to win games right now.”

Philadelphia was coming off a 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday, going scoreless in the final two periods and blowing a 4-1 lead. The drought reached five periods on Saturday.

There was no danger of a slump against the Sabres. Gagne scored his second goal since he was reacquired from Los Angeles on a slow trickler past Ryan Miller on the power play. Talbot scored Philadelphia’s first short-handed goal of the season minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

Flynn punched in the rebound to make it 2-1 midway through the first.

Then they rumbled.

Simmonds took out Tyler Ennis and followed it with a fight against Weber. Simmonds connected with three straight rights to the side of the face and easily won that fight as the crowd roared in appreciation. Weber was hit with a misconduct. Ennis didn’t return.

Ott threw a punch at Timonen to end the first. Hartnell went up to Ott, and the two jawed at each other as they left the ice to end the period.

Giroux made Buffalo pay when he scored only 17 seconds into the third for Philadelphia’s second power-play goal and a 3-1 lead.

“We’ve got to be ready to go,” Sabres coach Ron Ralston said. “We didn’t have enough urgency or desperation off the start. We kind of got a little back as the game went on.”

The Flyers fumbled the puck at the blue line, and Hecht capitalized with a short-handed goal to make it 3-2. It was just too late.

Each team had more hits than goals from there. Buffalo forward Nathan Gerbe tried to rough up Giroux along the back boards with hits to the back and head. Luke Schenn stood up for Giroux and sent Gerbe into the boards.

The Flyers showed they aren’t about to back down as they jostle for a playoff spot.

“We talked about coming out here tonight and actually playing with an edge,” Talbot said. “We’re finishing our checks a bit more. We’re a dangerous team when we skate, play physical and have two guys on the forecheck.”

NOTES: The Flyers will play three games over the next 13 days. … The Flyers have already played six sets of back-to-back games this season. … The Sabres are 3-4-1 since they fired coach Lindy Ruff. … Only Florida has fewer points in the Eastern Conference.

The Miami Herald, citing an unnamed source close to Bush, reported Sunday that the running back will not return to the team next season.

Three teams contacted Bush once the NFL’s three-day negotiating period opened Saturday at midnight but the Dolphins haven’t shown any interest in retaining him, the source told the newspaper.

Miami apparently will go with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas at the running back position in 2013.

The 28-year-old Bush proved that he can be an every-down tailback in Miami, rushing for 2,072 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons with the Dolphins.

In 2012, Bush played in every game for the first time since 2006 and fell just shy of his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season, finishing with 986.

In 91 career games, Bush has 4,162 yards rushing and 2,730 receiving and 48 touchdowns (29 rush, 15 receiving, 4 return).

B1G Finish: Still 4 teams alive for Big Ten title (Yahoo! Sports)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — It began on the last day of December, when Michigan State showed up at Minnesota’s Williams Arena on a six-game winning streak and left with a 13-point loss.

Along the way, Tyler Griffey slipped past Indiana, Ben Brust stunned Michigan and Trey Burke stole the show against Michigan State.

Each week brought new drama, and now, one of the most exhilarating Big Ten races in recent memory will finally end – in a most appropriate way.

Indiana can clinch an outright championship on Sunday with a win at Michigan, but if the Wolverines prevail, as many as four teams could share the title.

It will be a fitting conclusion after the Big Ten’s heavyweights went through 2 1/2 months of emotional peaks and valleys to reach this last day.

”Do I reflect on how fortunate I am to coach at this level against these type of players? Yes. It’s an opportunity that every coach would like to have,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. ”I do try to take a moment in the games, and just look up at the top of the stadium and see how it’s packed to the last row.”

The Big Ten had three teams in the AP’s preseason top five. Now there are four in the top 14 – and 14th-ranked Ohio State has a chance to move up after beating No. 2 Indiana on Tuesday night.

Despite that loss, the Hoosiers still lead the league by a game over Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. That means the Spartans and Buckeyes are both in an unusual situation: They need to hope Michigan wins.

”It’s my dream that this program is to the point where every year in the last week … we still have a mathematical chance to win a championship,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said after his team stayed in the race Thursday night with a win over Wisconsin. ”What happens, happens. I mean that because we had our chance to do it.”

If it weren’t for Wisconsin’s home loss to Purdue last weekend, an unbelievable five-way tie at the top would be a possibility – but the four teams still in the hunt can also look back on a slip-up or two that could have perhaps been avoided.

Michigan lost to Penn State late last month – it was the first conference win of the season for the Nittany Lions. Indiana let Griffey sneak in for a last-second layup in Illinois’ 74-72 win over the Hoosiers in early February.

Ohio State was blown out by that same Illinois team. Michigan State was in an early hole because of that 76-63 loss at Minnesota.

But all four teams were able to recover. Burke’s steal and dunk in the final minute lifted Michigan over Michigan State. The fearless point guard has carried the Wolverines at times, emerging as one of the front-runners for national player of the year. His main competition may be another Big Ten star – Indiana’s Victor Oladipo.

The race for Big Ten player of the year may be down to those two, but there’s little doubt about who made the shot of the year. Wisconsin trailed Michigan by three on Feb. 9 when Brust sent the game into overtime with a buzzer-beater from near midcourt. The Badgers went on to win.

Wisconsin fell out of the race Thursday, losing 58-43 at Michigan State. Now the Spartans (23-7, 12-5 Big Ten) need to hope Michigan beats Indiana on Sunday.

If that happens, No. 10 Michigan State can tie for the title by beating Northwestern in a game that starts at 6 p.m. local time.

Ohio State (22-7, 12-5) hosts Illinois at 12:30. Indiana and Michigan start at 4.

”I just want to play well on Sunday. That is where our focus is completely,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. ”We have one more game to play to end the regular season and that is the only thing that is on my mind and hopefully the only thing on our players’ minds.”

The seventh-ranked Wolverines (25-5, 12-5) rallied past Purdue on Wednesday night.

They now carry not only their own title hopes, but those of the rival Buckeyes and Spartans.

”It’s really weird. You never see those guys in green, or Ohio State, root for you,” Burke said. ”It was kind of like the situation we were in last year with Michigan State playing Ohio State.”

At this time last season, Michigan was pulling for Ohio State, which beat Michigan State to create a three-way tie for the Big Ten title between the Buckeyes, Spartans and Wolverines.

Ohio State already helped Michigan and Michigan State by beating Indiana on Tuesday. But the Hoosiers (25-5, 13-4) had already clinched at least a share of the championship, so they went ahead and cut down the nets at Assembly Hall afterward.

”We earned that right,” Indiana senior Jordan Hulls said. ”Obviously, we didn’t like to lose, but we earned that right to cut down the nets. We would have liked to have won but we couldn’t dwell on that.”

Now Indiana has a chance to celebrate its championship with a victory – or the regular season could end with multiple teams at the top. Either way, the stage is set for a thrilling finish after nobody was able to pull away from the pack.

”It doesn’t totally surprise me because there are so many good teams,” Izzo said. ”We were going to beat the daylights out of each other.”

No. 6 Miami beats Clemson for outright ACC title (Yahoo! Sports)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Down to its third try and last chance, Miami came through.

Kenny Kadji scored a season-high 23 points to help the sixth-ranked Hurricanes win the Atlantic Coast Conference championship outright by beating Clemson 62-49 on Saturday.

Kadji also grabbed 12 rebounds and Miami (24-6, 15-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) clinched its first outright men’s basketball league title after being foiled in consecutive losses to Duke and Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes tied the school record for victories set in 2001-02, when they went 24-8, and improved to 14-1 at home in their regular-season finale.

The league championship is the second for the Hurricanes, who shared the Big East Conference title in 2000.

Clemson (13-17, 5-13) has lost six consecutive games and nine of its past 10.

After struggling on defense recently, the Hurricanes clamped down, limiting Clemson to one basket during a pivotal 9 1/2-minute stretch to start the second half. Miami held a league opponent to 50 points or fewer for the seventh time.

When Kadji sank a 3-pointer for a 55-41 lead with 3:10 left, the Hurricanes ran upcourt grinning at each other to a deafening roar from the crowd, dressed as one in white ACC championship T-shirts. The game was the fifth sellout this year for the Hurricanes, traditional cellar-dwellers in ACC attendance.

After the final seconds ticked off, confetti rained from the ceiling.

Kadji, one of six seniors playing his final home game, went 4 for 6 from 3-point range. Fellow senior Trey McKinney Jones scored 10 points.

Sophomore guard Shane Larkin came off the bench for the first time this season and struggled early, missing his first seven shots. But he hit a pair of important 3-pointers late and finished with 11 points.

Clemson freshman Jordan Roper led the Tigers with 12 points, all in the first 5 minutes before Larkin entered the game and began to guard him.

The score was 25-all at halftime, and the Hurricanes took the lead for good with a 13-3 run to start the second half. Kadji hit consecutive baskets, the second a 3-pointer. Durand Scott then scored on back-to-back possessions for a 38-28 advantage with 11 minutes remaining.

Larkin was scoreless until he sank a 3-pointer with 8:46 left. He made another one on Miami’s next possession for a 44-34 lead.

Julian Gamble’s two free throws put Miami up by 13 for the first time at 51-38 with 4 minutes left.

Roper scored Clemson’s first five baskets, including a pair of 3-pointers for a 12-11 lead.

Laudrup signs new one-year Swansea deal

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has signed a one-year contract extension that keeps him at the Liberty Stadium until June 2015, the club have confirmed.

Capital One Cup

PA PhotosLaudrup has led Swansea to their first major silverware less than a year into the job

Laudrup has enjoyed a superb first season in charge of the Swans, guiding them to Capital One Cup glory and a place in the top half of the Premier League table.

The former Barcelona midfielder’s initial deal was set to run out at the end of next season, but his decision to extend his contract through to June 2015 will alleviate fears he would depart for pastures new this summer.

“We’ve started something this season that I want to continue,” Laudrup told the club’s official website. “I know there has been a lot of speculation (about my future), but I’ve always said that I am happy here and I never had any doubts I would stay.”

Jagielka ruled out of Everton clash

Everybody wants to get to Wembley – Marouane Fellaini

Everton’s Marouane Fellaini looks ahead to his side’s clash with Wigan in the sixth round of the FA Cup

Everybody wants to get to Wembley – Marouane Fellaini

Phil Jagielka will miss Everton’s FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan on Saturday, but manager David Moyes hopes the defender’s absence will be a short one.

Everton reportedly turned down Arsenal's previous bid for Phil Jagielka

GettyImagesEverton defender Phil Jagielka faces a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury

• Blog: Quarter-final looming

The 30-year-old suffered a badly gashed ankle in the opening minutes of last weekend’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Reading after a challenge by Adam Le Fondre.

Moyes confirmed immediately after that match that Jagielka would need surgery to stitch up the wound, and he will not risk him against Wigan. John Heitinga is likely to line up alongside Sylvain Distin in central defence.

The Toffees boss refused to put a timescale on when Jagielka might return, but he would appear to be in contention for the home game against Manchester City next weekend.

“We think it’ll be not too long before he’s back. We hope we’ll get him back quite quickly,” he said.

Moyes added that he would make a late call on whether to restore goalkeeper Tim Howard, who missed the Reading match with a back injury – the first Premier League game he had missed since September 2007.

Former Slovakia international Jan Mucha, who replaced Howard last Saturday, will continue in goal if needed.

“Tim’s doing OK,” Moyes said. “We’ve not made a decision on him yet.”

Moyes is hoping for FA Cup success as he bids to win his first trophy as Everton manager, with the club seeking to end a wait for silverware stretching back to 1995.

“The cup’s important for us. It’s important for everybody. No matter what anybody says, they want to get to the final. But we’ve got a few hard games if we’re going to achieve that,” Moyes said.

Midfielder Marouane Fellaini, meanwhile, has vowed to do all he can to steer clear of disciplinary trouble as he bids to play a full part in Everton’s push for cup glory.

Fellaini missed the FA Cup fifth-round replay win over Oldham with an ankle injury, but returned against Reading to head his 12th goal of the season.

The Belgium international is aware that he has to watch his step with referees, having collected eight bookings this season. If he were to collect two more yellow cards before April 14, he would incur a two-match suspension.

Fellaini has already served two suspensions this season, having missed the 1-1 draw at home to Norwich on November 24 after picking up five bookings, then collecting a three-match ban over Christmas when television evidence showed he headbutted Ryan Shawcross off the ball as Everton were held 1-1 at Stoke on December 15.

“I will try not to get any yellow cards until April, but it might happen because this is football,” Fellaini told Everton’s official website.

Brian Hartline, Miami Dolphins finalize five-year contract

The Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Brian Hartline agreed on a five-year contract worth nearly $31 million, a source close to the player confirmed late Thursday.

The deal includes $12.5 million in guaranteed money, the source said.

“It feels great,” Hartline said. “It feels great to know hard work and perseverance is worth something. But now it’s about winning games. I think we’re on the right path. I think we’re close.

“I’m excited to see what happens in free agency. We want to win. We’re set up so we have cap room to make some moves, and that’s one way we can win football games. It’s important. And the draft will be important, too. It’s exciting.”

Hartline enjoyed a breakout season in 2012, his fourth year in the NFL, with 74 receptions for 1,083 yards.

The Dolphins are making former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace their No. 1 target in free agency, which begins Tuesday. The Dolphins want to match Wallace with their two young receivers, Hartline and Davone Bess, to give second-year starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill an array of weapons in the passing game.

UPDATE: Hartline tweeted a photo of himself signing the contract.

Steven Jackson still sees self as bell-cow running back

Steven Jackson made the expected official Thursday, when he voided his contract with the St. Louis Rams.

Jackson now gets a five-day head-start on other free-agent running backs still tied to their current teams. Jackson has made it clear he’d like to play for a contender, which gives credence to the speculation connecting him to the Atlanta Falcons.

But it remains unclear if Jackson values playing time above all else. Jackson wants to contend for a Super Bowl, sure, but he also believes he can be a every-down back.

“For where I’m at, going into Year 10, I’m not ready to step back and just become a primary backup or a reduced role guy to be part of a running back by committee,” Jackson said Thursday on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I still have a lot left in my tank. I still have a lot left to offer to a team. We’re not talking about someone that’s in Year 12 or 13.”

Would Jackson accept a part-time role with a contender?

“Well, that’s where a very open dialogue has to take place,” he said. “I have opted out of my position of being with the team and being comfortable because I want to continue to still be the bell cow. So that’s how I want teams to look at me, that’s how I’m going to shop myself, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there if that’s not the feedback we’re receiving.”

From where we stand, Jackson sure sounds like a guy who still believes he can carry the ball 300 times and get it done. Is there a team that will promise that role to him? It would be surprising but not impossible.

Tiger shares lead at Doral after 66; 73 for Rory

Updated: March 7, 2013, 4:38 PM ET

By Bob Harig | ESPN.com

DORAL, Fla. — The mid-round walk-off behind him, Rory McIlroy stepped back into his other woes Thursday, again showing the poor form that led to his frustration a week ago up the road in Palm Beach Gardens.

The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer had difficulty on the relatively benign Blue Monster course at Trump Doral, where he was near the bottom of the 65-player field through the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Thursday.

Playing alongside No. 2 Tiger Woods and No. 3 Luke Donald, McIlroy had a stretch of three consecutive bogeys after an eagle at No. 1, his 10th hole of the day. He finished with a 73.

Woods, meanwhile, played one of his best rounds of the year, shooting a 66 despite a three-putt bogey and a few relatively short birdie misses. But he made nine birdies, his most in a round since the first round of last September’s BMW Championship. When Woods finished his round, he was tied for the lead.

McIlroy, 23, is coming off a tumultuous week that saw him quit mid-round last Friday at the Honda Classic, where he was 7-over par through eight holes. A combination of poor golf, high expectations and a bothersome wisdom tooth contributed to the abrupt exit, which played out for several days.

All along, McIlroy has said he’s been struggling with his swing entering the year, and that did not change Thursday. An issue with his backswing has caused a lack of confidence and inconsistency, apparent by some unusual takeaway rehearsals.

He hit just 3-of-14 fairways and only 10-of-17 greens Thursday.

The good news for McIlroy is after a missed cut in Abu Dhabi, a first-round defeat at the WGC-Accenture Match Play and the withdrawal from the Honda, McIlroy is assured of four rounds here. The tournament does not have a 36-hole cut.
