Edmonton Oilers G Devan Dubnyk hurt in collision at net

CHICAGO – Edmonton Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk has left Sunday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks after a collision at the net in the second period.

Dubnyk made a nice pad save on a streaking Marian Hossa before the posts were dislodged when the right winger and Edmonton centre Teemu Hartikainen converged on the goal. Hartikainen practically skated over the prone Dubnyk, who was down for several minutes before he was escorted from the ice.

A trainer appeared to be examining Dubnyk’s head and neck.

Yann Danis came in for the Oilers, who had a 4-2 lead at the time of the injury.

Chris Taylor battles with David Bentley

Both Millwall and Blackburn remain in this season’s FA Cup after grinding out a mediocre goalless draw in their quarter-final clash at the Den.

Neither side could break the deadlock and will face a replay at Ewood Park to determine which team will represent the Championship in the semi-finals.

2004 finalists Millwall created more chances to win the game throughout the 90 minutes and Rovers, who are yet to concede in this season’s competition, will be pleased to have left London with another chance of securing a trip to Wembley.

Andy Keogh hit a post and Danny Shittu forced a great save out of Blackburn’s Jake Kean whilst the visitors did not register a single shot on David Forde’s goal, although Joshua King saw a header hit the post with 13 minutes remaining.

The opening half an hour was short of both chances and quality as the two sides struggled to create openings.

Scott Dann suffered a cut above his eye in the 15th minute after being caught by Millwall striker Rob Hulse’s elbow in an aerial challenge.

The first decent effort came after 23 minutes when Liam Trotter bent a shot wide of Kean’s left-hand post as the hosts looked to take the initiative in the tie.

Millwall had the ball in the back of the net later in the half as Keogh headed home Chris Taylor’s corner but the whistle had already gone as Dany N’Guessan impeded Kean.

Former Wolves forward Keogh then saw a diving header come back off the post as he connected with Smith’s deep cross five minutes before the break.

Blackburn had a good chance to take the lead early in the second half but Jordan Rhodes could only fire over after latching on to David Bentley’s set-piece.

With the second half following a similar pattern to the first, Lions’ skipper Shittu picked up the ball in his own half before unleashing a piledriver from 40 yards which Kean tipped over for a corner.

Kenny Jackett’s side should have been ahead moments later when Keogh’s ball across the face of goal was ballooned over by Hulse.

The home side then enjoyed a period of sustained pressure but could not muster up an effort to beat Kean, with the final ball lacking quality on numerous occasions.

Blackburn came back into the game as the second half progressed and former Manchester United youngster King saw a climbing header come back off a post as they looked to snatch a semi-final berth late on.

It was Shittu who again came close to taking his side to the final four, stinging the palms of Kean from long range with the Rovers goalkeeper doing well to claw the rebound away from Hulse.

Dany N’Guessan then wasted a decent opportunity with just six minutes remaining as he blazed high and wide after cutting inside.

That proved to be the last chance for either side to settle the tie at the first time of asking, leaving both clubs waiting to see who their potential semi-final opponents could be.

Commish says Sacramento bid ‘not quite there’

Updated: March 8, 2013, 11:12 PM ET

Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. — NBA commissioner David Stern says the counteroffer to keep the Sacramento Kings from moving to Seattle needs to be increased financially before the league’s owners can consider it.

Stern said Friday night that the Sacramento group’s bid has some “very strong financial people behind it but it is not quite there.”

He said, “Unless it increases, it doesn’t get to the state of consideration.”

Stern also said there will be a meeting April 3 in New York to avoid rushing debate on the issue at the NBA Board of Governors meeting April 18.

A group led by 24 Hour Fitness founder Mark Mastrov and billionaire Ron Burkle submitted a counteroffer for the Kings last month.

They are hoping to block a bid by a Seattle group headed by hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, which has a signed agreement to acquire 65 percent of the franchise from the Maloof family for about $341 million.

Stern spoke before the Golden State Warriors hosted the Houston Rockets in Oakland, which is about a 90-minute drive from Sacramento.

Allegri sees red over AC Milan ill-discipline

AC Milan coach Massimillano Allegri has bemoaned his side’s inability to make light-work of Genoa despite the Milan club running away with a 2-0 victory.

• Paul: Ten-man Milan hold on for win

Allegri was left fuming as red card to Kevin Constant soured a victory – secured through goals to Giampaolo Pazzini and Mario Balotelli – that keeps AC Milan in the hunt for the Serie A crown.

And Allegri fears Constant’s ill-discipline could cost the Rossoneri more pain further down the track, with the remaining Milan players forced to work much harder through the midfielder’s absence.

“I thought we could have closed the match without using too much energy, but the sending off complicated things and made us struggle at the end,” he told Sky Sport.

“At this stage of the season we can’t afford such behaviour seeing as second place and the quarter-finals of the Champions League are on the line.

“Tuesday we will go to Barcelona to play against the best team in the world and we will need our energy. Genoa did very well and we struggled to close down (Daniel) Toszer who found life easy in the middle.”

However, Allegri said he was pleased with a performance which gives the club hope of catching league leaders Juventus and second-place Napoli.

It also gave the Milan coach a chance to assess injury worries affecting a number of his players.

“We had very few difficulties in the first half and were defending in an orderly fashion, while they were more dangerous in the second half,” Allegri said.

“The important thing was to win to give us a boost in the standings and to get back to winning on the road.

“We must defend the third spot and maybe look even higher up if Napoli concede points to us, even if it will not be easy.

“Balotelli didn’t have 80 minutes in his legs but he fought and helped us. He must improve his conditioning, but he will do that with work on the field in the coming weeks.

“Today he came on because Pazzini was injured or else he would have played one half. He (Pazzini) and Mexes will be evaluated in the coming days as I took them off for precautionary reasons.”

Jenner scores three times as the Generals extend win streak to six games

KINGSTON, Ont. – Boone Jenner scored three times as the Oshawa Generals downed the host Kingston Frontenacs 5-2 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League play.

Justice Dundas and Brian Hughes also scored for the Generals (39-21-4), who extended their win streak to six games, and Tyler Biggs chipped in with two assists.

Ryan Kujawinksi and Spencer Watson scored for the Frontenacs (25-33-5), who have dropped three games in a row.

Daniel Altshuller made 31 saves for the win as Mike Morrison allowed five goals on 33 shots before getting pulled midway through the third period. Colin Furlong replaced Morrison and stopped all five shots he faced in relief.

Oshawa went 2 for 2 on the power play while Kingston scored once on three chances with the man advantage.

Dundas made it 1-0 for the Generals at the 2:07 mark of the first period when he jammed home the puck past Morrison and Jenner extended the Oshawa lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal two minutes later.

Biggs thought he made it 3-0, but the goal was waived off due to a high stick.

Watson put the Frontenacs on the board after being left alone in front of Altshuller while on the power play at 12:04 of the second period and Kujawinski fooled Altshuller with a wrist-shot on the rush three minutes into the third period to tie up the game.

Jenner broke the tie, with the eventual winner, on the power play 11 seconds after Sam Bennett was called for a goaltender interference penalty and he and Hughes added two more goals in the span of 32 seconds to put Oshawa ahead for good.

Leafs look for third straight road win; visit Bruins on TSN

(Sports Network) – The Toronto Maple Leafs try for their third straight road victory this evening when they visit the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

Catch all the action live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV, beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt.

The Leafs are 9-4-0 as the road team this season and won its third straight game Wednesday night against Ottawa, posting a 5-4 home victory over the Senators. Former Bruin Phil Kessel posted a goal and two assists as the Maple Leafs jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding on for the win.

James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak each notched a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while James Reimer gave up four goals on 43 shots in the win.

“I think we’ve been doing a lot of good things here and we’ve been getting paid off with our work,” said Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf. “With this short season every point is needed, and we want to keep building what we’ve been working on.”

Boston aims for its eighth straight win in their series with the Maple Leafs. The Bruins notched a 1-0 win at Toronto on Feb. 2 in the first of four meetings between the Northeast Division foes this season.

The Leafs haven’t defeated Boston since a 4-3 shootout victory at TD Garden on March 31, 2011. Toronto has lost three straight in Beantown since that win and has been outscored by a combined 18-3 margin over those three setbacks.

Boston is 0-1-1 over its last two games, marking just the second time this season the club has suffered consecutive losses. The B’s most recent setback was a rough one, as Washington overcame a 3-0 first-period deficit to post a 4-3 overtime victory in Tuesday’s contest in D.C.

Eric Fehr scored the game-winner 37 seconds into overtime for the Capitals. Fehr was skating over the Boston blue line when Nicklas Backstrom laid a lead pass one stride ahead. The veteran grinder accepted the feed, skated between a pair of Bruins defenders and scored with a rising shot to the far post.

Brad Marchand, Zdeno Chara and Doug Hamilton tallied for the Bruins, who were facing the Caps for the first time since Washington won a Game 7 in Boston to close out a first-round playoff series last April. Tuukka Rask made 22 stops in the setback.

“We were sloppy on the forecheck and not doing the things we’re supposed to, and they just kept coming on odd-man rushes,” said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. “Then, in our own end, we were puck-watching and all of a sudden, [the puck] is in our net. You could sense in the second [period] we weren’t the sharpest.”

Anton Khudobin was first off the ice at Thursday’s morning skate and is expected to get the start in goal this evening.

The Bruins are opening a brief two-game homestand on Thursday and will also host Philadelphia on Saturday. Boston is 6-2-1 at the Garden this season.

Canucks look to end slump against Blue Jackets

(Sports Network) – The Vancouver Canucks, who have lost four of their last five games, look to get on track when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have won their last two games.

The Canucks hope their recent history in this series will help them get back on track following Tuesday’s 3-2 shootout setback to the San Jose Sharks.

Though Vancouver fell to 3-4-3 in its last 10, the club was happy with an effort that saw Henrik Sedin and Jannik Hansen score in the second period to erase a 2-0 deficit.

Chris Higgins then opened up the shootout with a goal for the Canucks, but the Sharks got scores from Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski against Cory Schneider in the deciding frame.

“It’s frustrating when you play a back-and-forth game, a really tight game, you come back and you lose in a shootout. It’s just a little dissatisfying,” said Schneider, who made 28 saves on 30 shots, “but I think we’re happy with our effort. … I think if we keep playing like this, the results will come.”

The Canucks went 0-for-5 on the power play against the Sharks and have not scored a goal on their last 15 chances on the man advantage spanning the past six games.

Defenseman Keith Ballard left Tuesday’s loss during the third period with a lower body injury, while fellow blueliner Kevin Bieksa missed the game with a groin strain.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets hope that the momentum from their first two-game winning streak of the season will be enough to get them a rare victory over the Canucks.

Columbus may have a difficult time staying hot versus Vancouver, which has won 11 of the previous 13 encounters. The Blue Jackets were able to snap a five- game home slide to the Canucks with a shootout win on Dec. 13, 2011.

The Blue Jackets had won just five of their first 21 games before snapping a four-game skid with a 2-1 overtime victory versus the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. They followed up that win with a 4-3 shootout decision over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, their fourth straight game to go beyond regulation.

Sergei Bobrovsky provided a much-needed spark on Tuesday, stopping all 21 shots he faced in nearly 45 minutes of action after relieving Steve Mason early in the second period. Mason allowed three goals on just eight shots faced.

Bobrovsky also stopped both skaters he faced in the shootout, while Artem Anisimov and Mark Letestu tallied in the bonus frame. Vinny Prospal posted a goal and an assist in regulation, while Derek MacKenzie and Jack Johnson each scored.

“I sense that our guys have a little more confidence,” said Columbus head coach Todd Richards. “It’s nice to see our guys get rewarded because they’ve been working real hard lately.”

Johnson had missed the past four games with a shoulder injury, but logged almost 27 minutes of action as the Blue Jackets posted their first winning streak since winning the final two games of last season. They haven’t won three in a row since March 28-31 of last year.
