Duchene’s last-second goal in OT lifts Avalanche over Sharks

DENVER — Matt Duchene scored his second goal of the night just as time was about to expire in overtime, lifting the Colorado Avalanche over the San Jose Sharks 3-2 on Sunday to stretch their home winning streak to a season-high five straight games.

Duchene, who has three goals in his last two games, wristed a shot past Antti Niemi after taking a pass from P.A. Parenteau.

Officials upheld the goal after a replay review showed Duchene got the shot off an instant before time would have run out in the extra period.

Patrick Marleau scored San Jose’s first goal, the 400th of his career. Logan Couture tied the score 2-all at 16:35 of the third when he followed a turnover by Colorado with a slap shot that got past goalie Semyon Varlamov.

Ryan O’Reilly also scored in a second straight game for the Avalanche, who beat the Sharks for the first time in the third and final meeting between the teams during the NHL’s lockout-shortened season.

Duchene, who matched a career high with four points in Friday night’s 6-2 win over Chicago that stopped the Blackhawks’ record season-opening points streak at 24 games, got Colorado on the board at 6:47 of the first period. With the Avalanche on a power play, Parenteau sent a pass across the crease through traffic that reached Duchene, and he lifted the puck over Niemi’s right shoulder for his 10th of the season.

Midway through the second, the Avalanche killed off a San Jose power play with the help of some tenacious goaltending by Varlamov. The Sharks peppered Colorado’s goalie with seven shots over the 2-minute power play but he turned the flurry away with an array of glove, stick, kick and body saves.

Less than a minute later, right wing Aaron Palushaj led a 2-on-1 rush before centring a pass to the streaking O’Reilly, who knocked the puck into the net past Niemi on his glove side at 6:58.

San Jose pulled within a goal at 19:20 of the second when Marleau redirected a shot from Justin Braun past the surprised Varlamov.

NOTES: With an assist on Duchene’s first-period goal, Parenteau extended his career-high points streak to six games. … The Sharks won the two previous meetings between the teams, one of which went to a shootout. … Marleau leads the Sharks with 13 goals this season. … The next assist by Colorado’s Chuck Kobasew will be the 100th of his career.

Ducks beat Blues for 11th straight home win

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Corey Perry scored the go-ahead goal with 14:40 left in the third period before adding an empty-netter in the final minute, Jonas Hiller made 14 of his 29 saves in the second period, and the Anaheim Ducks tied a franchise record with their 11th consecutive home victory, 4-2 over the St. Louis Blues on Sunday night.

Bobby Ryan tied it early in the third and Andrew Cogliano had a short-handed goal, helping the Ducks improve the NHL’s second-best record to 18-3-3. Anaheim, 15-2-2 in its last 19 games, hasn’t lost at home since the opener against Vancouver.

Patrik Berglund had a power-play goal, Ryan Reaves also scored, and Jaroslav Halak made 17 saves for the Blues, who have lost six straight in Anaheim and 10 of 11 there.

Ryan was sent off for tripping Roman Polak at 1:17 of the third, and the Blues grabbed a 2-1 lead on the ensuing power play. Berglund used defenceman Toni Lydman as a screen to beat Hiller 24 seconds later.

Ryan redeemed himself when he jumped on a loose puck in front and whipped in his eighth goal of the season. Francois Beauchemin earned one of his three assists on the goal.

Polak was off for tripping Saku Koivu when Perry parked himself at the right of the crease, and Ryan Getzlaf‘s screened wrist shot from the top of the right circle glanced off him and past Halak for his fifth game-winner this season.

In a game featuring teams that came in with the NHL’s top two power-play units, the league-leading Ducks were 1 for 7. St. Louis was 1 for 3 and surrendered a short-handed goal for the fourth time this season.

Shortly after coming up empty on a two-man advantage, the Ducks tied it 1-1 at 8:24 of the second period with a power-play goal.

Coming off consecutive shutout wins for the fifth time in franchise history, the Ducks fell behind 1-0 at 6:09 of the first when Reaves redirected Wade Redden‘s wrist shot from the left point past Hiller’s stick for his first of the season.

Redden’s assist was the fourth point in 15 games for the two-time All-Star defenceman.

NOTES: The Ducks have never posted three straight shutouts in the regular season, but did it in the 2006 playoffs. … Anaheim had an 11-game home winning streak in the 2009-10 season. … Free agent C Jason Arnott, who has been skating with the Blues this week, will find out Monday whether he will be signed. Arnott last played in the NHL on April 30 with the Blues in the second game of the Western Conference semifinals. … The Blues are 3 for 29 on the power play in their last 11 games. … The Ducks are 8-0 against Central Division teams. … Anaheim C Nick Bonino was dressed for the game, but didn’t play because of the flu. RW Kyle Palmieri missed his fourth straight game because of an upper body injury. … Blues LW Andy McDonald missed his seventh straight game because of an injured left knee. He sat out 51 games last season with a concussion.

Flames activate Backlund; re-assign Baertschi to AHL

CALGARY — Mikael Backlund was activated from the Calgary Flames’ injured reserve on Saturday and Sven Baertschi was sent to the minors to make room for the returning veteran.

Backlund was out over four weeks with a grade 2 medial collateral ligament sprain suffered on Feb. 7 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 23-year-old has three goals, an assist and a minus-1 rating in eight games with the Flames.

Baertschi started the 2012-13 season with the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Heat, playing 21 games, with six goals and 12 assists. He joined the Flames for the start of the NHL season but suffered a hip flexor injury that forced him to miss 11 games.

The 20-year-old has an assist and a minus-2 rating in 10 NHL games.

Baertschi was Calgary’s first round selection, 13th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Mancini baffled by Richards woes

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini says it is “strange” that Micah Richards is still not fit to return to first-team football for the club.

• Blog: City up for’t cup
• Preview: Man City v Barnsley

Richards, 24, has not played since injuring his knee against Swansea in October and has been limited to just four appearances this season.

Mancini had expected to have the right-back available again by now and, while Richards has started training on the pitch, the Italian is finding it frustrating.

“This is strange, I don’t how this is possible. We can’t do anything,” he said. “I hope that maybe in three or four weeks he’ll be ready. His knee was not 100%, he continues to work and now he has been working for two months.”

Richards is scheduled to start training with his team-mates in the next few days and could make his comeback at the end of March if he does not suffer any further setbacks.

Mancini added: “Maybe two or three weeks [when he's back]. From when he started to work with the team he needs another two weeks. I hope maybe he can start with the team next week.”

Captain Vincent Kompany is another defender who has been out for longer than expected and Mancini said the Belgium international would like to face Barnsley in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday, but will not feature in a bid to ensure he is fit to face Everton next week.

“Calf injuries are a big problem. If you don’t recover very well it can happen like it has with Vinnie,” he said. “Maybe he wants to play on Saturday because he always wants to play. But we can’t take this risk.”

The team announced Friday afternoon that they have signed their captain to an eight-year contract extension.

Sources: Catholic 7 To Retain ‘Big East’ Name

Three months after indicating they were leaving the Big East Conference to form their own league, the Catholic 7′s departure date finally became official.

The Big East announced Friday it has agreed to allow the Catholic 7 schools to depart on June 30.

“I am pleased that this agreement has been reached,” Big East commissioner Mike Aresco said. “With the long-term well-being of our outstanding institutions and their student-athletes of paramount importance, each group worked through a number of complex issues in an orderly, comprehensive and amicable manner marked by mutual respect. We part ways as friends and colleagues and look forward to the success of both conferences.”

Although not addressed in Aresco’s statement, sources told ESPN’s that the Catholic 7 will keep the Big East Conference name and have the right to play its league tournament in Madison Square Garden.

The Catholic 7 schools — DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Villanova — will form a 10-team league by adding Butler, Xavier and likely Creighton, sources told ESPN’s Andy Katz.

The group also is expected to announce a multi-year media rights deal with Fox Sports, worth at least $3 million per school annually, sources told ESPN.

Hatem Ben Arfa battles with Ewerton

Hatem Ben Arfa passed up a golden opportunity to celebrate his 26th birthday in style as Newcastle claimed a 0-0 draw against Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League in Moscow.

The Frenchman, making his first appearance since tearing a hamstring at Fulham on December 10, was played in on goal by compatriot Yohan Cabaye with 64 minutes gone, but could not beat goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov with an ambitious chipped effort.

An away goal would have seen the Magpies take a significant step towards the quarter-finals, although had keeper Rob Elliot, once again deputising for the injured Tim Krul, not made two excellent saves from Samuel Eto’o either side of half-time, Anzhi could have been heading for St James’ Park next week with a lead to defend.

In the event, Alan Pardew would have been the happier of the two managers after seeing his much-changed side cope with the artificial pitch and plummeting temperatures at the Luzhniki Stadium to deny the hosts a home victory in Europe for the first time in eight attempts this season, and give themselves every chance of progressing.

However, he will need no reminding that Metalist Kharkiv left Tyneside last month with a 0-0 first leg draw, but did not make it through to the last 16.

Anzhi ran out having not lost a European game on Russian soil – their only defeat came against Rangers in the 2001-02 season in a game played on neutral territory in Warsaw – and having only conceded their first home goal against Hannover in the previous round.

That record, combined with the pitch and the weather – it was -5 in Moscow at kick-off time – suggested the Magpies would have their work cut out.

Pardew was without six members of his strongest side with Krul, Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy, Jonas Gutierrez, Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse left behind for a variety of reasons, and he chose to leave Steven Taylor, Davide Santon and Cheick Tiote sitting on the bench.

That meant fielding a starting XI without a single recognised striker as Ben Arfa was asked to lead the line.

In the circumstances, it was perhaps not surprising that the visitors failed to muster a single effort on target during the opening 45 minutes.

But to Pardew’s delight, Anzhi were little more threatening in a half which did little to excite a sparsely-populated stadium.

Newcastle’s cause was helped in no small part by £30million Brazilian Willian’s premature departure through injury.

In the 23 minutes he was on the pitch, he looked the man most likely to cause the Magpies problems, feeding a telling 14th-minute pass into the path of Oleg Shatov to prompt a timely intervention by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, and then drilling and shooting from a tight angle well wide seconds later.

Eto’o was left appealing in vain for handball against Massadio Haidara after breaking from his own half with 29 minutes gone with Hungarian referee Istvan Vad unmoved.

Newcastle featured as an attacking threat only fleetingly with Gabriel Obertan keeping full-back Andrei Eschenko occupied at times, but without looking like opening the home side up.

In the event, it was Elliot who made the game’s first save five minutes before the break, tipping Eto’o's dipping drive from distance over the bar.

Anzhi resumed in determined fashion and it took a brave block by central defender James Perch to prevent substitute Lacina Traore’s shot from troubling Elliot.

Newcastle responded by mounting a rare cohesive attack as Moussa Sissoko found Ben Arfa and then set off in anticipation of a return pass, but central defender Ewerton stepped in.

Elliot turned Eto’o's skidding 61st-minute drive around the post, and Shatov acrobatically fired wide from the resulting corner.

But Ben Arfa was handed a glorious opportunity to give the visitors the lead three minutes later when he was played in by Cabaye, but saw his chipped effort easily blocked by Gabulov.

It proved to be the France international’s final act of the night as he was replaced by European specialist Shola Ameobi.

Eto’o blazed a long-range free-kick high and wide as his frustration started to show, but it took a good block by Eschenko to keep out Sylvain Marveaux’s long-range effort.

Elliot had to field a scuffed effort from Eto’o as time ran down – and the visitors held on.

Scudamore slams Hammers over Tevez

Image tevezpardew.jpg

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has hit out at those who caused the third-party ownership scandal involving Carlos Tevez at West Ham.

GettyImages / ChristopherLeeCarlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano when joining West Ham.

Tevez and his fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano arrived at Upton Park in August 2006 while their contracts were partly owned by Media Sport Investment, a company formerly run by Iranian-born businessman Kia Joorabchian.

When both moved to other clubs, the Hammers received only a nominal fee.

In April 2007, an independent commission investigating the move found West Ham – who were kept in the top flight by Tevez’s goals that season – guilty of lying to the Premier League over the third-party involvement and fined them £5.5 million.

The Hammers were also made to pay relegated Sheffield United £18 million, who went down as the Hammers stayed up on the final day of the season thanks to a Tevez winner at Manchester United. Soon afterwards, the Premier League outlawed third-party ownership completely.

“It is quite simple – you are completely undone by an act of bad faith,” Scudamore told Bloomberg in a TV interview.

“If a club, through its executives, chooses to lie straight to your face, there is a great deal of damage that can be done from that.

“Ultimately, the Tevez saga goes down to people not being honest. With any regularity body, if people are not honest there is very little you can do about it and that is why the whole thing unravelled.

“It ranks up there as the number one act of bad faith that any club has ever done towards me during my time here. After that, it was dealt with under our rule book and the rest is history.”

The Premier League has also gone to UEFA to try to ensure that such moves cannot happen in the rest of Europe, but Scudamore is pleased they have been stopped on his own doorstep.

“When you consider what certain Football Associations get fined for racist abuse in Europe, £5.5 million is a huge fine,” he added.

“Our rules say that, if you break them, then a commission hears the case and decides. We are glad English football has stopped these transactions happening.”

LeBron, Heat scramble to extend streak to 16

Image nbarecapsz200x451x1

MIAMI — LeBron James scored 26 points, including a go-ahead layup with 3.2 seconds left, and the Miami Heat scrambled late to beat the Orlando Magic 97-96 on Wednesday night and extend their franchise-record winning streak to 16 games.

Superstars and Win Streaks

LeBron James has led the Heat to a franchise-record winning streak, but he still has a long way to go to match the best run among these legends:

  Streak Season
Wilt Chamberlain 33 1971-72
Michael Jordan 18 1995-96
Magic Johnson 16 1990-91
LeBron James 16 2012-13
Larry Bird 14 1985-86

Dwyane Wade scored 24 points and Chris Bosh added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, who blew a 20-point, second-half lead and then rallied from a five-point deficit in the final minutes.

Nic Vucevic had 25 points and 21 rebounds for the Magic, who got 16 points apiece from Jameer Nelson and Tobias Harris, 13 from Arron Afflalo and 12 from Maurice Harkless.

James drove diagonally through the lane for the go-ahead shot, getting to the left side of the glass for the layup that saved Miami — and its streak.

Vucevic now has two games of 20 rebounds or more in his career — both this season, and both against Miami. He had a 20-point, 29-rebound effort in a loss to the Heat on Dec. 31.

But he was one of three Magic players to foul out in the final minutes, as Orlando let a golden chance go awry.

Nelson hit a jumper with 1:36 left, giving the Magic a 96-93 lead. James missed two 3-pointers on the next Miami possession, and on the ensuing Miami trip, Harris drove from the left baseline but his basket was waved off, with Shane Battier beating him to the spot and drawing an offensive foul, Harris’ sixth of the night.

Miami tried for the tie twice on the next trip, but Wade and Allen missed 3-pointers. Bosh was fouled on a rebound — the sixth on Vucevic, making him the third Orlando player to reach the limit in the final minutes. Bosh made both free throws to get the Heat within one with 38 seconds remaining.

Al Harrington missed a wild 3-pointer, and James got the rebound to seal the stop Miami desperately needed. So with 12.6 seconds left, the Heat got the ball and a chance to win.

MIAMI HEAT

Even more coverage of the Big Three and their adventures in Miami. Heat Index »

James delivered. Orlando had no timeouts, and only managed a 3-point try by Afflalo from near midcourt as time expired.

The Heat came in with 44 wins, the Magic with 44 losses, and after two possessions of the second half, the reigning NBA champions had a 20-point lead.

And then about one quarter later, they were losing.

Vucevic had 10 points and nine rebounds in the third quarter alone — the Heat, as a team, had four rebounds in the period — and the tide of the game totally turned in a matter of minutes. What was a 60-40 Miami lead got whittled down steadily, with the Magic getting within 15 after a jumper by Afflalo, then 10 on a hook shot by Vucevic, five on a 3-pointer by Harris and finally within 77-74 when Vucevic closed the quarter with two free throws.

Orlando didn’t stop there, either. Nelson made a contested 3-pointer to tie the game at 79-all with 10:29 left, and his three-point play about a minute later gave the Magic their first lead of the night.

Vucevic added back-to-back baskets, and suddenly, Orlando was up 86-81 with 8:29 left — meaning the Magic run, in about 14 minutes of actual playing time, was a 46-21 burst. Miami answered with the next six points to briefly re-take the lead, but Vucevic struck again with 5:03 remaining, getting a short shot off the glass to drop and stake the Magic to a 91-87 edge.

It was nearly enough.

Game notes

James was in double figures for his 200th straight regular-season game with the Heat, extending his franchise record. … Magic coach Jacque Vaughn played against Miami 30 times in his career, his teams going 15-15. … Battier extended his streak of games with a made 3-pointer to 17, tying the third-best stretch of his career. … The Heat have honored a military member who has returned home from a tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan before games in Miami for the past several seasons. Their honoree on Wednesday: Army 1st Sgt. Darrell Williams, who returned just two weeks ago from serving a tour in Afghanistan — and is the first cousin of Bosh’s wife, Adrienne Bosh.

Senators look to find scoring touch against Leafs on TSN

(Sports Network) – The Ottawa Senators’ scoring issues, as well as injuries, finally seem to be catching up with the club.

Riding their longest losing streak of the season, the Sens hope the anticipated return of forward Milan Michalek can provide a spark to the offence in Wednesday night’s rivalry matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Watch the game live on TSN at 7pm et/4pm pt or listen to the game on TSN Radio 1050 and TSN.ca/Toronto with pre-game coverage beginning at 6pm et/3pm pt. You can also get game updates and tweets from TSN’s hockey personalities with TSN.ca’s Game Night blog.

Ottawa has been held to three goals or fewer in 13 straight games and ranks 29th out of 30 teams in the NHL with 2.13 goals per game. Losing the likes of Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza and Michalek to injury hasn’t helped, but the Sens still managed to win five straight from Feb. 18-25.

However, they have been held to four goals over their first three-game slide of the season, though two of those defeats came after regulation. That includes Sunday’s 3-2 shootout setback to the New York Islanders.

Patrick Wiercioch‘s first NHL goal tied the game with 1:09 left in the third period, but Jakob Silfverberg and Daniel Alfredsson came up empty on their shootout chances, while Robin Lehner was beaten twice after making 33 saves through overtime.

“It’s disappointing … I thought in the second and third we were dictating play better than we did in the first,” said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean.

Lehner was making his second start of the season and MacLean will go back to Ben Bishop on Wednesday in the fourth of a five-game road trip with Craig Anderson still sidelined with a sprained right ankle.

Bishop is 4-3-0 with a 2.15 goals against average and .938 save percentage in seven games this season, making 26 saves on 28 shots faced in a 3-2 home win over the Leafs on Feb. 23.

Michalek missed that game, as well as a 3-0 loss in Toronto on Feb. 16, because of a sprained knee that has held him out of the past 10 games overall. The forward netted a career-high 35 goals last season and has two goals and eight points in 13 games this season.

“I’m ready. It was a good practice today and I’m excited for tomorrow,” he said on Tuesday. “My knee feels good right now and I’m ready to play.”

Michalek returns to action in time for the third edition of the Battle of Ontario this season and the Sens snapped a three-game series losing streak in the most recent encounter.

They have has also won four of their past six in Toronto despite the shutout loss in mid-February, one that featured a 34-save shutout by Maple Leafs goaltender Ben Scrivens.

Scrivens was handling the starting duties with No. 1 James Reimer out of action for nearly three weeks due to a strained MCL.

Reimer made his second start on Monday since returning from injury and posted 28 saves in a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. He helped keep his club in the game before Toronto’s offense erupted for three goals in the third frame. He won his fifth straight start and improved to 8-3-0 with a 2.43 GAA and .923 save percentage on the season.

“We weren’t very happy with what we were doing for the first 40 minutes of the hockey game and we were fortunate that we were only down one goal,” said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. “The tide had really turned.”

Nazem Kadri, coming off his first career hat trick, had a first-period tally and added an assist to give him nine points over a five-game point streak, while Clarke MacArthur was one of three goal scorers in the third. He has six points in his last five games.

Jay McClement and Phil Kessel also scored, with Kessel picking up his first goal on home ice this season.

Forward Matt Frattin who is out with an injury and is believed to be close to returning, won’t suit up tonight.

Toronto moved to 5-5-0 at home in 2013 by winning its second straight and for the sixth time in nine games overall.

Reimer is a good choice to get the start tonight given that he is 5-1-1 in seven career games versus the Senators with a 1.70 GAA, .943 save percentage and two shutouts.
