Report: NFL to recommend changes to chop block rule

Brian Cushing might have an offseason win coming his way later this month.

The Houston Texans linebacker has been stomping for rule changes to protect defensive players after he was clipped from behind by New York Jets guard Matt Slauson on a block that tore Cushing’s anterior cruciate ligament.

The evolution of the NFL:
Take a look at how the NFL has evolved from its humble roots, and the efforts being made to ensure it continues to grow.

The NFL’s competition committee overwhelmingly agreed to support a rule change to ban the type of peel-back blocks inside the tackle box, like the one that ended Cushing’s season, USA Today Sports reported Monday.

The nine-member committee met last week and will present its recommendations at the annual NFL owners meetings, which begin March 18 in Phoenix.

The NFL has made strides to protect players by adjusting rules and handing out fines for illegal hits. However, most of those changes favored offenses, while fines levied have been on defensive players — Slauson was fined $10,000 for his hit on Cushing, but no flag was thrown.

The potential “Cushing rule” could be another step to make the game safer on both sides of the ball.

The report said the committee also wants to ban low, blindside blocks to defenders in pursuit of a scrambling quarterback after he has left the pocket, a play that has become a bigger concern with the proliferation of mobile quarterbacks.

While these types of blocks might not occur frequently, the NFL has an obligation to protect its players on both sides of the ball. Eliminating offensive players diving at the knees of an unseeing defender is an obvious step in the right direction.

Winners of 18 straight, Heat try to stay focused (Yahoo! Sports)

MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James once carried a team to 66 wins. Ray Allen played for a club that won 19 consecutive games. Dwyane Wade led a team that finished with the Eastern Conference’s best record.

For each, it’s a footnote in seasons where no championship was won.

There’s no arguing that the Miami Heat are playing better than any other team in the NBA right now. They’ve won 18 straight games, are sitting atop the league standings and have a very real chance of wrapping up the No. 1 seed in the East playoffs by the end of the month. While all that sounds good, it’s not changing the singular priority of this Heat season.

Championship-or-bust was the thinking Miami carried into this year, and not even the seventh-longest winning streak in NBA history has changed that.

”It’s not our goal,” James said. ”Our goal isn’t to win games consecutive. Our goal is to win a championship. Right now, our goal is to get better each and every game, to continue to improve. That was never one of our goals coming into the season, see how many games we’d win in a row. Our goal is to win a championship and not take any shortcuts in that process.”

Miami will try for its 19th straight win on Tuesday night, when the Heat play host to the Atlanta Hawks – a team that’s 0-3 against the reigning NBA champions this season. After that, a trip to Philadelphia awaits on Wednesday, to face a 76ers team that has lost 13 straight regular-season meetings against Miami.

Win on Tuesday, and the Heat would match the fifth-longest winning streak in NBA history.

Win Tuesday and Wednesday, and then it becomes truly rarefied air, because Miami would be just the fourth team to ever win 20 straight in the same season.

”You don’t want to take a team like this for granted,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. ”We’ve talked about this with our group for the last few days. It’s a special group. It’s a special opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed. We’re going after something that’s an unknowable future. But we have an opportunity, a legitimate opportunity, so we have to make the most of every day we have together.”

Ask the Heat, and they’ll say they respect the historical aspects of what’s going on, but they’ll also be quick to point out that the Larry O’Brien Trophy doesn’t get awarded after epic winning streaks.

”We know what our prize is,” Allen said. ”And it’s waiting for us.”

The streak’s latest addition came on Sunday night, when even on a rare subpar scoring night from James, the Heat rolled past Indiana 105-91 in a game where Miami took control with a huge start to the third quarter and was never seriously threatened again.

Sunday’s win was significant for many reasons, namely that the Pacers are the closest thing the Heat have to a nemesis these days in the East, that they were 2-0 against Miami this season and that they were the last team to beat the defending champions way back on Feb. 1.

In the five-plus weeks since, all the Heat have done is take what was a close race in the East and make it a total runaway, assume the top spot in the NBA standings and become the first team to clinch a playoff spot – not that getting one was ever, ever in doubt.

”Right now, honestly, it doesn’t really feel like we are on this kind of win streak,” Wade said. ”We are just coming in and we’re just taking care of business. We come in every day when coach calls us in, and we do our work and we come back and we just play. We’re not in the locker room saying, ‘Aw, we’re on this win streak and it’s amazing.’ To us, we’re just playing basketball.”

So how, Wade was asked, will the Heat not get bored when the games down the stretch of the regular season inevitably become less-than-significant in terms of the East playoff race?

”Keep showing up at the gym,” Wade said. ”We’re a focused team. We’re a veteran team. We have a goal. The biggest thing for us is to come in and continue to go through this process.”

The numbers during this 18-game streak are staggering.

James is averaging 27.2 points on 60 percent shooting. Wade is averaging 24.3 points on 55 percent shooting. Chris Bosh is at 16.6 points on 54 percent shooting.

And they haven’t been doing it alone, either. Some nights, it’s Shane Battier hitting big shots to be the difference-maker. Sometimes, it’s Allen, who seems to be hitting his stride again. On Sunday, it was Mario Chalmers, who scored 26 points on only nine shots to help carry the Heat past the Pacers.

James will likely be the NBA’s MVP again, but he’s hardly had to be the lone star for the Heat.

”I know you can’t win an Oscar unless everybody does their job,” Wade said.

At some point, the streak will end. It might happen Tuesday. It might happen Wednesday. It might happen next week or next month. Whenever it does, the goal then will be the same goal the Heat have now.

That doesn’t mean the Heat aren’t enjoying these moments. It simply means they aren’t losing sight of the bigger picture.

”I understand the history of the game,” James said. ”We should be happy and excited about the opportunity right now.”

Kunitz scores hat trick as Penguins drop Islanders

PITTSBURGH — Sidney Crosby tied a career high with five assists, and Chris Kunitz posted his second hat trick of the season in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 6-1 rout of the New York Islanders on Sunday night.

Crosby’s big night boosted his point total to an NHL-leading 45 and helped the Penguins win their fifth straight. James Neal had a goal and three assists, and Pascal Dupuis scored twice for Pittsburgh. Tomas Vokoun made 23 saves.

Brad Boyes scored the lone goal for New York, which had a five-game point streak snapped. Evgeni Nabokov stopped just 12 of 17 shots in two periods before getting pulled for the final 20 minutes.

The Penguins played without reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin, who sat out due to an upper body injury.

Kunitz more than picked up the slack. The veteran forward scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period and then added his third midway through the second as the Penguins began a home-heavy portion of their schedule with a blowout.

The Islanders had lost 13 straight games in Pittsburgh before breaking through at the end of last season and backing it up with a win in Pittsburgh six weeks ago.

While New York has been a modest surprise — the Islanders entered the game just two points out of a playoff spot — they were no match for the NHL’s highest-scoring team. The Penguins are rolling behind a resurgent Crosby and two linemates playing perhaps the finest hockey of their careers.

A gifted two-way player with a knack for doing dirty work in tight places, Kunitz is flourishing in his ninth season. His fourth career hat trick gave him 17 goals this season, and his 36 points are third in the NHL. Kunitz’s career-high point total in a season is 61, set last year. He is on pace to post career bests in goals and points in a lockout-shortened, 48-game sprint.

Having Crosby at the peak of his powers certainly helps. Nearly a year after his last comeback from concussion-like symptoms, Crosby has regained his MVP form. He extended his point streak to nine games — the longest stretch in the NHL this season — and the Penguins had little issue to kick off a three-week stretch that could help them strengthen their position atop the Atlantic Division.

Pittsburgh spent most of the first half of the season on the road but Sunday night started a 12-game run in which they will play only twice away from home.

The Penguins didn’t waste much time getting settled in. Dupuis put them up 1-0 just over 7 minutes in when his shot from the goal line clanked off the post, smacked the back of Nabokov’s pad and went into the net.

Kunitz pushed the lead to 3-0 by the end of the period after a pair of power-play goals within a span of 3 minutes. He poked in a feed from Neal for his first goal and then did it again on his next shift. Kunitz took a backhand feed from Neal and slipped it by Nabokov to score Pittsburgh’s 33rd first-period goal, the most in the league.

Boyes briefly got the Islanders back into it when Pittsburgh defenceman Simon Despres slipped trying to clear the puck, allowing Boyes to come in alone. He snapped a shot over Vokoun’s right shoulder to make it 3-1.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma called timeout to let his weary club — playing its third game in four days — get its legs. Whatever he told them worked. Kunitz and Neal scored 16 seconds apart to make it 5-1.

NOTES: Crosby’s other five assist game came against the Philadelphia Flyers on Dec. 13, 2006. … New York scratched forwards Keith Aucoin and Eric Boulton as well as defenceman Joe Finley. … The Penguins scratched defencemen Deryk Engelland and Robert Bortuzzo. … Pittsburgh hosts Boston on Tuesday. The Islanders are off until Thursday when they play at Tampa Bay.

Rodgers hails versatility of in-demand Suarez <img src="http://assets.espn.go.com/icons/watch.png">

Liverpool edge by Tottenham

ESPN commentator Dan Thomas breaks down a thrilling 3-2 win by Liverpool over Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

Liverpool edge by Tottenham

Brendan Rodgers praised the versatility of Luis Suarez after Liverpool’s 3-2 triumph over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

• Whalley: Liverpool frustrate Villas-Boas
• Blog: Spurs must look on bright side

Suarez opened the scoring for the home side, and won the penalty which allowed Steven Gerrard to slot home the winner from the spot in the 82nd minute. The Uruguay international took his season tally to 29 goals in all competitions, moving Rodgers’ men to within two points of fifth-placed Arsenal.

“Football is worldwide now so everyone has seen how good he is,” Rodgers said of Suarez.

“But he is very happy among his mates here and you have seen today it doesn’t matter where he plays – he was in the number 10 role and then he went in from the side he still created havoc. He knows the trust I put in him and that gives him the platform to go and perform.”

The win was Liverpool’s third consecutive and their first over a top-four opponent, leading Rodgers to hail the character of his charges.

“It was very important win for us,” he said. “We are on a great run at the moment and we knew this was going to be a severe test of our qualities and character against a team in great form.

“For us to get three points and show the character was fantastic and I am delighted for the players because they worked ever so hard.

“You can see the mentality in the group. I thought we had to show different characteristics today than what we have had to do in recent weeks.

“We’ve been comfortable in a lot of the games and been able to control them but against a top side we came through.

“I had to make some changes in the game to get the control back in our favour and when we did that I thought we were good value for the win.”

Defeat ended Spurs’ 12-match unbeaten league run – their last defeat also coming on Merseyside against Everton in December – and manager Andre Villas-Boas said it was harsh on them.

“It is difficult for us to take because we did ever so well to come back into the game in the first half and we started brightly in the second half,” he said.

“We lost control of the game when things looked to be going our way, which was more down to a couple of mistakes we did rather than to Liverpool’s merit – although they worked very hard.”

Report: Manny off to Taiwan, will arrive Monday

ESPN.com news services

With no big-league teams seeking his services, Manny Ramirez is off to Taiwan, and according to CBSSports.com, will arrive Monday and sign to play with the EDA Rhinos.

Ramirez

Ramirez

Ramirez’s agent, Barry Praver, confirmed the player had an agreement in place to join the China Professional Baseball League team, the report said.

Ramirez said last month if he didn’t have a job in Major League Baseball by Thursday he would play for the Rhinos, who begin their regular season next Sunday.

Ramirez didn’t provide financial details of his agreement, but a good foreign player usually earns about $12,000 per month in Taiwan.

To increase his chances of landing an MLB job, the 12-time All-Star played winter ball in the Dominican Republic for the first time in 18 years. He hit .298 with eight home runs, 27 RBIs and 21 runs in 181 at-bats with Aguilas Cibaenas.

Ramirez, 40, batted .312 with 555 homers and 1.831 RBIs in 19 MLB seasons before retiring from baseball in April 2011 after committing a second violation of MLB’s drug policy.

Last year he signed a minor league contract with the Oakland A’s and served a 50-game penalty in Triple-A, but he became a free agent after Oakland didn’t call him up to the majors midseason.

Cardinals’ Matheny will undergo back surgery

Matheny On Cards’ Season Outlook

JUPITER, Fla. — Cardinals manager Mike Matheny planned to leave the team after Sunday’s spring training game and return to St. Louis for surgery to repair a ruptured disk in his lower back.

Matheny expects to be back at spring training for Thursday’s game against Atlanta in Jupiter.

“There is still a fragment that is stuck in a spot where it’s getting to the nerve and affecting what is going on back there,” Matheny said prior to Sunday’s game against the New York Mets.

The 42-year-old Matheny, who replaced Tony La Russa as manager after the 2011 season, said early in spring training that the injury probably traces back to his days as a big league catcher from 1994-06.

“They seem pretty confident this will take care of it,” he said of the surgeons.

The ruptured disk sends pain into his right leg, which became severe on Feb. 28 and caused him to skip the next day’s game against Houston at Kissimmee.

An epidural injection on March 4 failed to relieve the pain.

“We were hoping it would kind of settle down and go away, but it really hasn’t,” Matheny said.

The pain is at its worst when Matheny stands after sitting for any length. He decided to have the surgery now, before plane trips during the regular season.

“I hate that it’s been as big a deal as it’s been,” he said. “I’m anxious to get it over.”

Bench coach Mike Aldrete will manage the team in Matheny’s absence.

Oilers visit Blackhawks team looking to start new streak

(Sports Network) – The Chicago Blackhawks made it halfway through the shortened season before finally suffering a regulation loss on Friday.

The Blackhawks will look to get back in the win column Sunday, when they host the Edmonton Oilers at United Center.

One of Chicago’s wins during its streak came at the expense of Edmonton as the Blackhawks notched a 3-2 overtime win against the visiting Oilers on Feb. 25. Marian Hossa scored the game-winner at 1:44 of the extra session to deliver the sixth of Chicago’s 11 straight victories.

Edmonton had won three straight in this series before losing that OT decision. It was the Oilers’ second setback in their past three trips to the Windy City.

The Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference with 20 points, enter Sunday on a five-game losing streak (0-4-1) but the club hasn’t lost six in a row since an 0-8-3 stretch from March 8-31, 2011.

Edmonton has been shut out in its last two trips to the ice, losing 3-0 in Detroit on Thursday before being slammed 6-0 the following night in Nashville. All told, the Oilers are 1-4-2 on a nine-game road trip that will end Tuesday in Colorado.

Devan Dubnyk was pulled after allowing two goals on 13 shots in the first period for the Oilers in Friday’s rout. Yann Danis finished up by surrendering four scores on 21 shots.

“It’s difficult to say anything positive about what happened,” Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger said. “There’s really no excuses at all.”

Edmonton is 4-7-3 as the road team this season.

Chicago went 21-0-3 to begin the 48-game regular season before finally losing in regulation Friday evening at Colorado. The Avalanche won the finale of a home-and-home series in 6-2 fashion, avenging Chicago’s 3-2 comeback win in Wednesday’s meeting at United Center.

The lopsided loss ended a pair of monumental Chicago streaks. The Blackhawks compiled the longest point streak to begin an NHL season and had also won a franchise-record 11 straight games before losing in Denver.

Jonathan Toews and Bryan Bickell scored for the Blackhawks, who hadn’t lost in regulation since a 6-1 setback at home to Nashville on Mar. 25, 2012 — an incredible stretch of 30 games.

Corey Crawford gave up five goals on 19 shots in 40 minutes to suffer the defeat. Ray Emery stopped 11-of-12 chances in the third.

“It’s a great accomplishment, having different ways of winning night in and night out and seeing contributions from all different players,” said Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville. “It was a lot of fun right up until today. Our opponents treated it like it was something different, and we welcomed the challenge.”

Perhaps, Chicago lost its first regulation game due to the absence of Patrick Sharp, who suffered a shoulder injury in Wednesday’s game against Colorado and will miss 3-to-4 weeks of action. The valuable two-way forward is fourth on the Blackhawks with 18 points (5 goals, 13 assists) in 2013.

Although they’ll be without Sharp for an extended period of time, defenseman Steve Montador is nearing a return to game action after a long battle with concussion symptoms. Montador hasn’t played since March 27 of last season, but he was activated from injured reserve earlier this week and is working his way into game shape.

The Blackhawks can still remain unbeaten in regulation at home on Sunday after beginning the 2013 campaign with a 11-0-1 mark at United Center. Following this game, however, Chicago will head out on a four-game road trip that is set to begin Thursday at Columbus.

Sir Alex wants Wayne Rooney contract extension

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he hopes striker Wayne Rooney will extend his contract at Old Trafford.

Premier League

AssociatedAlex Ferguson wants Wayne Rooney to stay at Old Trafford

United have had to fend off rumours the 27-year-old was heading for the exit door after he was started on the bench in the club’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

And Ferguson has made it clear Rooney remains an important figure in his future plans, hoping the England international will renew his contract with the club.

“There’s no issue with his contract, when it has to be renegotiated it will be,” Ferguson said. “We don’t want players to leave. He’ll definitely be here next season, there’s no doubt about that.”

Ferguson denies Rooney is reaching the twilight of his career, with many critics suggesting the striker’s omission shows similar signs experienced by Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham as their time at Old Trafford came to an end.

“Wayne is coming to his mature years, like we saw with Cristiano,” Ferguson said. “He got me 32 goals last year and he’s had a lot of issues this year in terms of illness, injuries and he’s not had a long run of games, but he’s still got me 14 goals.

That’s from probably two-thirds of the appearances of last year. He’ll get 20 goals, no doubt about that. I’ve said before if he gets over 20, Chicharito over 20 and Van Persie’s haul now, we’re talking over 60 goals. That’s put us right in the ballpark, no doubt about that. But it’s not all about one person.”

Ferguson has been given a selection headache ahead of United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea on Sunday, with Rooney and Shinji Kagawa vying for the same midfield role.

I think Wayne can play through the middle. But he’s developed his game a lot over the last few years,” Ferguson said. “He played last week for 20 minutes, made two goals and scored one.

Wayne and Shinji can play together. There’s no doubt about that. At Newcastle we played a diamond system and that’s a consideration. We’ve played Wazza centre midfield and Shinji towards the right. They did really well in that game.

“Good footballers can play together. I think the preferred position for Shinji is off the frontman in a central position and that’s the same for Wazza. So we maybe have to alternate them.

I just need to make sure I pick the right team, bearing in mind who our opponents are. I have an issue in that Shinji scored a hat-trick last week and did not play on Tuesday and he and Wazza are best playing in that role behind the main striker. And Chicharito’s record against Chelsea is unbelievable. I have these issues.”

Chelsea are bidding to win their fifth FA Cup in seven years and although rivals Manchester City had a relatively easy passage into the semi-finals with a 5-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday, Ferguson insists despatching of Premier League opponents is a welcomed challenge.

“It’s a quarter-final with the opportunity to get to a semi-final and hopefully a final,” he said. “I think if you are looking at opponents in the Cup you will have to regard it as the hardest one.

In the FA Cup over the past few seasons we keep getting Premier League clubs anyway. The year we won the Treble we had top-flight clubs right the way through. I’ve not got an easy game, it’s a Cup tie and their record has been pretty good, the best in the country over the past decade. So we have a job to do.”
