ESPN commentator Dan Thomas breaks down a thrilling 3-2 win by Liverpool over Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

Liverpool edge by Tottenham

Brendan Rodgers praised the versatility of Luis Suarez after Liverpool’s 3-2 triumph over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

• Whalley: Liverpool frustrate Villas-Boas
• Blog: Spurs must look on bright side

Suarez opened the scoring for the home side, and won the penalty which allowed Steven Gerrard to slot home the winner from the spot in the 82nd minute. The Uruguay international took his season tally to 29 goals in all competitions, moving Rodgers’ men to within two points of fifth-placed Arsenal.

“Football is worldwide now so everyone has seen how good he is,” Rodgers said of Suarez.

“But he is very happy among his mates here and you have seen today it doesn’t matter where he plays – he was in the number 10 role and then he went in from the side he still created havoc. He knows the trust I put in him and that gives him the platform to go and perform.”

The win was Liverpool’s third consecutive and their first over a top-four opponent, leading Rodgers to hail the character of his charges.

“It was very important win for us,” he said. “We are on a great run at the moment and we knew this was going to be a severe test of our qualities and character against a team in great form.

“For us to get three points and show the character was fantastic and I am delighted for the players because they worked ever so hard.

“You can see the mentality in the group. I thought we had to show different characteristics today than what we have had to do in recent weeks.

“We’ve been comfortable in a lot of the games and been able to control them but against a top side we came through.

“I had to make some changes in the game to get the control back in our favour and when we did that I thought we were good value for the win.”

Defeat ended Spurs’ 12-match unbeaten league run – their last defeat also coming on Merseyside against Everton in December – and manager Andre Villas-Boas said it was harsh on them.

“It is difficult for us to take because we did ever so well to come back into the game in the first half and we started brightly in the second half,” he said.

“We lost control of the game when things looked to be going our way, which was more down to a couple of mistakes we did rather than to Liverpool’s merit – although they worked very hard.”

No. 2 Indiana beats No. 7 Michigan 72-71 for title (Yahoo! Sports)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Cody Zeller made a go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and altered Trey Burke‘s shot at the other end, lifting No. 2 Indiana to a 72-71 victory over No. 7 Michigan on Sunday that gave the Hoosiers their first outright Big Ten title in two decades.

The Hoosiers (26-5, 14-4) trailed by five points in the last minute but took advantage when the Wolverines (25-6, 12-6) were unable to seal it at the foul line. Jordan Morgan had a fairly easy tip-in attempt of Burke’s miss that cut have won it for Michigan, but the ball rolled tantalizingly off the rim and Indiana’s Christian Watford grabbed the rebound with 4 seconds left.

A couple of Michigan’s rivals surely wish the Wolverines had won.

Ohio State, which beat Illinois on Sunday, needed an Indiana loss to earn a share of the conference championship. Michigan State was in the same position before hosting Northwestern later in the day.

Morgan made a tiebreaking putback with 1:35 left, teammate Tim Hardaway followed with a layup on the Wolverines’ next possession and Glen Robinson III made the first of two free throws with 52 seconds to go, giving the Wolverines a 71-66 lead.

After Zeller made a shot on the ensuing possession, Hardaway missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Zeller then connected on two free throws and Burke couldn’t convert at the line, missing the front end of another haunting 1-and-1.

Zeller hit another big shot down low, the one that counted most in a game Indiana might have needed to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Hoosiers will be the top-seeded team at this week’s Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

Burke and Indiana’s Victor Oladipo, both of whom are Big Ten and national player of the year candidates, struggled to make shots all game at Crisler Center.

Zeller, meanwhile, made sure no one forgot about him.

The 7-foot sophomore center altered Burke’s shot in the lane and was ready to celebrate when Morgan’s tip attempt rolled off.

Fittingly, the Big Ten title didn’t come easy for the Hoosiers.

Zeller scored 25 points and pulled down rebounds. Oladipo had 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting and 13 rebounds. Will Sheehey scored 10 points, six of which came on key 3-pointers.

Burke scored 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting. Robinson had 13 points, Nik Stauskas scored 12 and Hardaway had 11. The Wolverines 7 of 13 at the line.

Indiana, looking as though it didn’t want to give any other team a piece of the Big Ten championship, got off to a strong start and led 10-3 when Yogi Ferrell’s field goal followed a pair of 3-pointers from Jordan Hulls.

The Wolverines took control in the first half with a 12-0 run, but faded toward halftime and led 33-30 after 20 minutes.

Michigan led by as many as 11 points – matching the biggest lead any team has had against the Hoosiers – and looked as though it was going to be on the winning end of a closely contested game until it simply could not make key free throws or stop Zeller.

Bobrovsky picks up first shutout, Blue Jackets top Red Wings

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Sergei Bobrovsky had 29 saves in his first career shutout, and Cam Atkinson and Nick Foligno took advantage of Detroit giveaways to score goals in leading the suddenly hot Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-0 victory over the Red Wings on Saturday.

Jack Johnson also picked up a power-play goal for the Blue Jackets, who have won four in a row and earned points in their last six.

For a change they didn’t work overtime. They had gone to extra time in their previous five games.

Bobrovsky, acquired in a trade with Philadelphia last summer, picked up his first career shutout in his 99th NHL game and 16th with Columbus. He was at his best in the third period, stopping difficult shots by Niklas Kronwall, Drew Miller and Pavel Datsyuk.

The Blue Jackets improved to 3-0-1 against the Red Wings this season.

Already ahead 1-0, the Blue Jackets took a three-goal lead — with help from the Red Wings in each case — by scoring twice in a span of 83 seconds in the second period.

After Datsyuk was penalized for delay of game, R.J. Umberger dug the puck off the wall to get it to Derick Brassard, who skated to the high slot and left a drop pass for Johnson. The University of Michigan grad’s hard one-timer from the top of the right circle was his third of the year.

Before the crowd of 17,957 — with a liberal sprinkling of Red Wings fans — really settled down, it was 3-0.

In a scene similar to what took place in the first period, Detroit defenceman Kyle Quincey mishandled a puck along the back boards, with a pass glancing off his right skate. Ryan Johansen collected it and whipped a quick pass to Foligno at the right doorstep, who jammed it in to become the third Blue Jackets player to score his third goal on the day.

The Blue Jackets took advantage of an ugly turnover by Kronwall to open the scoring.

Kronwall was behind his own net when his clearing pass was intercepted by Matt Calvert. Calvert circled and fed Atkinson who was all alone crashing the net.

Jonas Gustavsson got a rare start in place of Jimmy Howard for the Red Wings. Gustavsson, who made 21 saves, was playing in only his fourth game this season.

The Red Wings’ power-plays away from home continued. They were 0 for 3 with a man advantage.

According to STATS, the Red Wings’ streak of futility on the road power play is the fourth-worst to start a season since 1987-88. The Minnesota Wild, in their inaugural season in 2000-2001, failed to score on their first 47 power plays. The Atlanta Thrashers were 0 for 42 in 2001-2 and the New York Rangers in 1999-2000 were 0 for 39.

NOTES: Columbus was playing its first game since losing RW Derek Dorsett (broken clavicle) in Thursday night’s 2-1 overtime win over Vancouver. … The Red Wings opened the second half of their schedule. They have only nine home games and 15 on the road. … Detroit was without C Valterri Filppula (shoulder) for the sixth game in a row. … The Blue Jackets hadn’t won four in a row since March 1-8, 2012. … The Blue Jackets are perfect on the kill over eight games, stopping all 21 power plays they’ve faced. They have not allowed a PP goal since Feb. 18 vs. Anaheim.

Source: CB Robinson to Chiefs on 3-year deal

Updated: March 8, 2013, 11:38 PM ET

ESPN.com news services

Former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson reached agreement Friday night on a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Williamson ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

Robinson was among several key cuts made by the Falcons last week, joining a list that included running back Michael Turner and defensive end John Abraham. The moves freed up about $16 million in salary cap space for Atlanta.

The 30-year-old Robinson signed with Atlanta in 2010 and became a steady figure in the secondary, known especially for his bruising hits. He had four interceptions over the past three seasons.

The agreement with Robinson continued a busy offseason for the Chiefs.

They signed receiver Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt to significant contracts, gave left tackle Branden Albert the franchise tag at more than $9.7 million and have agreed to a trade for quarterback Alex Smith.

Dunta Robinson, Kansas City Chiefs agree to contract

It’s still unclear what sort of free-agency chatter we’re going to be subject to this weekend, but we can offer you this: The Kansas City Chiefs have landed a cornerback.

NFL.com’s Albert Breer reports that Dunta Robinson has reached an agreement with the Chiefs on a three-year deal, according to a source close to the player. The former Falcons defensive back was released by Atlanta earlier this month in a cap-saving move that slashed $9 million off the books. The Falcons also got rid of a largely disappointing performer.

Robinson — cut three years into the six-year, $57 million deal he signed in 2010 — struggled in coverage last season and figures as more of nickel defender for the Chiefs. He remains consistent against the run and could be worked into the mix at safety.

Robinson turns 31 in April, but the Chiefs, at least, have landed a relatively durable player. He started 46 of a possible 48 games for the Falcons after making 79 starts for the Texans during his six-year run in Houston.

Andy Reid likes importing veteran players and we’ve already seen that happen at quarterback. The Chiefs have some talent on defense. Robinson isn’t going to save the day, but he’s part of the plan for a new regime in Kansas City working to aggressively rethink the roster on both sides of the ball.

Schoop’s big day at plate helps Dutch shock Cuba

TOKYO — The Kingdom of the Netherlands’ run to the second round was the feel good story of the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Before everything is said and done, the Dutch may turn out to be the story of the 2013 Classic.

Orioles prospect Jonathan Schoop had a three-run home run in the sixth and finished a triple away from hitting for the cycle to help bring his nation to the brink of a berth in the semifinals with a 6-2 win over Cuba in the first game of the second round on Friday at Tokyo Dome.

“It’s a great moment for our country,” Netherlands manager Hensley Meulens said. “We have the momentum on our side right now. The guys are playing great. They’re scoring first to keep the pressure off the pitching, they play great defense.”

The Netherlands will play the winner of the Chinese Taipei-Japan game scheduled later Friday night, on Sunday, and Meulens wasn’t concerned about which of the Asian nations his team would face.

“We have to play the better team anyway,” he said. “The best team is going to win this game. We have to play good to beat them.”

Cuba was left to rue a multitude of missed opportunities, and manager Victor Mesa was less than pleased after the game.

“I don’t think they’re a very good team, to be honest,” Mesa said through a translator when asked for his impression of the Dutch. “I think we could’ve scored more. I think we should’ve scored four or five more runs.”

Meulens felt his team, which left 14 runners on base, left a few runs in the field as well.

“We hit good today,” Meulens said. “We could’ve scored a lot more runs. We had the bases loaded with no outs (in the seventh) and we didn’t score. Line drive, hard hit, right at the third baseman, then a popup and then a ground ball.”

Schoop had a productive night in the field at second base, and was 3-for-6 at the plate, driving in four runs with a three-run homer and an RBI double.

“Maybe I just see the ball well, and try to put the ball in play” Schoop said. “I feel comfortable everyday.”

Curt Smith hit a solo home run for the Dutch, Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons had an RBI single among his two hits, and former Braves all-Star Andruw Jones was 2-for-4 with a walk.

Starter Diegomar Markwell threw six innings of one-run ball, allowing nine hits and a walk, to earn the win.

He’s now helped the Kingdom of the Netherlands dispatch two of the world’s premier baseball-playing nations during the Classic. Markwell limited Korea to a pair of hits over four scoreless innings in a 5-0 in his team’s opening game.

“I’m very happy,” Markwell said. “I started off up in the zone, and the Cuban guys were very aggressive. Then in the third inning, I started to adjust.”

Markwell had plenty of help in this one, with his defense converting five double plays behind him, four of which were turned by shortstop Simmons and Schoop. Simmons also caught a popup after center fielder Roger Bernadina lost it and rifled to first for a double play that Meulens called “one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen.”

Picking up the win in Japan may have been extra sweet for Meulens, who won a Japan Series in 1995 with Nippon Professional baseball’s Yakult Swallows, who play at Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium.

“For me personally it was good to see my friends here in Tokyo and also reminisce about the good old days from winning a championship in Japan,” Meulens said. “Hopefully we’ll win one again this time.”

The loss sends the Cubans into an elimination game against either Chinese Taipei or Japan.

Cuban starter Ismel Jimenez wasn’t able to duplicate his solid outing against Brazil in the first round, walking two batters in the first, and allowing two runs on four hits in the second.

Jimenez lasted 1 2/3 innings and gave up a pair of runs on two hits.

Alfredo Despaigne and Yulieski Gourriel each homered for the Cubans in the loss.

“My batting is good compared to the last couple of days,” Gourriel said. “I hope I can contribute more in tomorrow’s game.

Smith opened the second with a home run to left-center that put the Dutch ahead, 1-0. Kalian Sams followed with a double and took third on Dashenko Ricardo’s sacrifice bunt. Simmons drove the runner in with a single up the middle to make the score 2-0.

Despaigne led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to right.

The Cubans had fallen behind, 5-1, by the time Gourriel took reliever Leon Boyd deep to center in the seventh.

Simmons led off the eighth with a single to left, and Schoop drove him in with a double to make the score 6-2.

NEW YORK — Kevin Durant had 34 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 1:38 left, and the Oklahoma City Thunder pulled out a 95-94 victory over the New York Knicks on Thursday night.

Russell Westbrook struggled over the final three quarters but finished with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in the Thunder’s first trip to New York since Dec. 22, 2010. Durant also had eight boards and six assists.

Oklahoma City posted its third straight win, fighting off a spirited effort by a Knicks team missing All-Star Carmelo Anthony.

J.R. Smith scored a season-high 36 points for the Knicks, but missed a turnaround jumper that would have won it as time ran out.

Anthony missed his second straight game with what the Knicks said is a stiff and sore right knee.

CHICAGO — Daniel Carcillo scored the tiebreaking goal with 49.3 seconds left in regulation, and the Chicago Blackhawks won their 11th consecutive game, beating the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Wednesday night to extend the best start in NHL history.

Jonathan Toews and Andrew Shaw also scored for Chicago (21-0-3), which reached the halfway point of a lockout-shortened season without losing in regulation. The remarkable Blackhawks have earned at least one point in their first 24 games, stretching their NHL record.

Dating back to last year’s regular season, the streak is 30 games.

Carcillo knocked in a rebound with a backhand shot after Semyon Varlamov made two in-close stops on Viktor Stalberg during a scrum in the crease.
