Wilkins backs Gus Poyet for Chelsea job

Ray Wilkins has backed Guy Poyet to become the next manager of Chelsea, with the post set to be vacant in the summer.

• Blog: Chelsea invoke old values

Stamford Bridge legend Wilkins, who had successful spells as a player and coach with the west London club, believes the Uruguayan currently in charge of Championship side Brighton has what it takes to succeed in one of football’s toughest jobs.

Wilkins is convinced Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will not bring bookmakers’ favourite Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge this summer, as he suspects the Real Madrid boss already has his eyes on another prestigious Premier League posting.

“I think Jose will be the next manager of Manchester United, so I would give the Chelsea job to someone like Gus Poyet,” Wilkins told talkSPORT. “He has served his apprenticeship at Swindon and Leeds and has Brighton playing some wonderful football.

“Knowing the way they employ managers at Chelsea, I would expect them to go for a foreign manager. Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga, Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid? Both could be interesting.

“Gianfranco Zola has been mentioned, but I’m not sure whether it would be a little soon for Franco, so I would look at Poyet. He loves the club to pieces, plays in the right manner and would be a good choice.”

Wilkins went on to suggest the ongoing woes of £50 million striker Fernando Torres are unlikely to be resolved at Chelsea, as the style of play employed by the reigning European champions does not suit the misfiring Spanish striker.

“When he played at Liverpool, they played the ball beyond defenders for Fernando and he used his pace to get himself clear and gets shots on goal, but Chelsea’s build-up play is so much more deliberate,” he said.

“Often when he receives the ball at Chelsea, he is surrounded by plenty of players. Maybe his feet are not good enough, maybe he is not good enough to play with his back to goal compared to the likes of a (Didier) Drogba or someone like that. It’s a shame to see the way it has gone for him at Chelsea.”

Meanwhile, Wilkins has questioned the decision of interim Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez to continually omit club captain John Terry from his starting line-up, and he is urging the Spanish tactician to re-install the Stamford Bridge legend in place of Brazilian David Luiz.

“I am a big John Terry fan and having seen David Luiz playing in midfield, I am even more convinced he is better suited to that position,” he added.

“When I saw the second Manchester United goal going in on Sunday, I thought there is only one person who could have headed that away and that was John Terry. I don’t see how you can leave him out of the big games. If he is on the bench, he must be fit to play.”

Cullen Jenkins, N.Y. Giants strike three-year contract

Cullen Jenkins is joining the New York Giants.

NFL.com’s Kimberly Jones broke the news Sunday that Jenkins had signed a three-year, $8 million contract with the Giants. Jenkins is guaranteed $3 million in the deal.

Schein: Nine riskiest free agents

The money will start flying around when free agency starts Tuesday. Adam Schein provides teams with a list of guys to avoid. More

The Giants were just one of several teams interested in Jenkins, who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles last month for salary-cap reasons. After meeting with the Giants last week, Jenkins flew to the West Coast for meetings with the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders.

Jenkins is set to step into a starting role alongside Linval Joseph on the interior of New York’s defensive line. Jenkins replaces Chris Canty, who was cut by New York last month.

Jenkins, a nine-year NFL veteran, comes to the Meadowlands after spending two seasons with the Eagles as part of their doomed “Dream Team” experiment. Prior to that, Jenkins spent seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers. According to Mike Sando of ESPN, Jenkins played about two-thirds of the available defensive snaps since 2008. He finished last season with 26 tackles, 30 quarteback pressures and four sacks in 16 games.

This is a nice signing by the Giants, who gain depth and experience along a defensive line well-built to get to the quarterback. Given the interest Jenkins garnered on the open market, the Giants must be pleased they got this done at a manageable price.

Prem: QPR and Villa rally for vital victories

Image gabrielagbonlahorscoresvreafc20130309_275x155.jpg

Queens Park Rangers’ Premier League survival bid is well-and-truly alive after they earned only their fourth win of the season against Sunderland on Saturday. However, Reading remain in deep trouble following defeat in the big relegation six-pointer against Aston Villa, while Southampton stay close to the bottom three after a stalemate at Norwich.

Gabriel Agbonlahor finds the top corner to put Aston Villa in front at Reading

GettyImagesGabriel Agbonlahor scored Aston Villa’s valuable winner at Reading

Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa side claimed three enormous points with a 2-1 win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium, leaving the Royals 19th in the Premier League – only above QPR by virtue of the goals scored column. Strikes from Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor lifted Villa out of the relegation zone above Wigan, and they had to come from behind on away soil.

Reading actually took the lead thanks to a horror show for 21-year-old Villa defender Nathan Baker on the half-hour, diverting the ball into his own net with his standing leg as he attempted to clear Jobi McAnuff’s cross.

However, within two minutes Villa were level, Benteke’s deflected effort finding its way past Stuart Taylor after the ball came in from the flank. Reading then contributed to their own downfall with some awful defending for Villa’s second on the stroke of the interval, although nothing should detract from Agbonlahor’s emphatic finish.

The home crowd howled with disapproval in the second period when Noel Hunt’s strike was flagged for offside – replays showing it was a matter of inches. Reading pressed forward, having carved out a reputation for fightbacks this season, but they could not rescue the situation on this occasion, leaving them four points adrift of safety.

Harry Redknapp has history when it comes to defying the Premier League trapdoor, earning the nickname “Harry Houdini” for his magic act at Portsmouth. He requires something similarly spectacular at QPR, and a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Sunderland courtesy of Loic Remy, Andros Townsend and Jermaine Jenas gave Rangers a giant shot in the arm. The Loftus Road club found themselves staring at a potential six-point gulf to 17th place at one stage in the afternoon, but they broke their league goalscoring drought – stretching back to Boxing Day on home soil – to keep the gap at four.

Steven Fletcher netted Sunderland’s opener in the 20th minute, converting a quick counter after Adam Johnson’s shot was blocked. However, Remy scored his first goal at Loftus Road to equalise with a classy finish at the near post, before Townsend smashed the goal of the day – chesting and volleying home from 25 yards to win it. Jenas then added another high-quality strike as Rangers enjoyed a rare moment of comfort in the dying minutes.

Southampton will be looking nervously over their shoulders following a 0-0 draw away to Norwich. Mauricio Pochettino has taken a mere six points from seven games in charge since he controversially replaced Nigel Adkins as manager, and Saints remain only four clear of drop zone.

They had plenty of chances in a lively first half at Carrow Road, although it was early in the second period that the first real gilt-edged opportunity went begging when Adam Lallana fired over with the goal at his mercy. Controversy arrived in injury-time when Norwich were awarded a soft penalty, but Artur Boruc proved the Saints hero with a save from Grant Holt.

In the day’s other game, West Brom maintained their hunt for European football, beating Swansea 2-1 at the Hawthorns. Victory lifts the Baggies above Liverpool into seventh and came courtesy of goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jonathan De Guzman (OG).

Michu missed a couple of early chances for the Swans but Luke Moore steered home a clever header on the half-hour to open the scoring. Lukaku used his pace and power to equalise close to half-time, but then saw a second-half penalty saved. The Baggies were not to be denied, De Guzman the unlucky man as Angel Rangel’s clearing heading ricocheted in off his back.

Yo, Adrian: Team Mexico KOs U.S. behind duo

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com | 3/9/2013 12:45 A.M. ET

PHOENIX — First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer off R.A. Dickey in the third inning, giving Team Mexico an early four-run lead on the way to a 5-2 victory over Team USA on Friday in the World Baseball Classic in front of a crowd of 44,256 at Chase Field.

Dickey didn’t have it early as the U.S. knuckleballer allowed a pair of runs in each of the first and third innings to a Mexico squad coming off a loss to Italy in Thursday’s opener of Pool D.

The big blow was the homer off Dickey by Gonzalez deep to right-center, a shot that was reviewed and passed muster via instant replay. Gonzalez had three RBIs in the game, the other coming on a first-inning infield grounder.

The outcome sets up a crucial doubleheader on Saturday for the two teams at Chase Field. Mexico plays Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET while the U.S. faces a must-win game against 2-0 Italy at 9 p.m. Both games can be seen on MLB Network and ESPN Deportes.

Italy defeated Canada earlier on Saturday, 14-4, to take control of the pool.

The U.S. could manage only two hits and a run off Mexico right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who last week was nursing a right groin strain that made him questionable for the tournament. Meanwhile, Dickey’s knuckleball wasn’t dancing and sat flat in the zone. He pitched four innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

When U.S. shortstop Jimmy Rollins doubled with two outs in the seventh, it was his 12th hit in Classic play, the most by any American player. Ken Griffey Jr. and David Wright each have 11.

The U.S. has had trouble with Mexico over the years. In 2003, the Americans were knocked out of an Olympic qualifier by Mexico, and three years later they were bumped from the second round of the inaugural Classic. Both losses were by identical scores of 2-1.

In the first round of the Classic in 2006, the U.S. defeated Mexico, 2-0. The two teams were in different pools and did not play in the ’09 Classic.

Board of Governors vote next for realignment plan

The National Hockey League will submit its proposed realignment plan to the Board of Governors after receiving consent from the National Hockey League Players’ Association on Thursday.

If approved, the League’s new realignment plan will go into effect starting with the 2013-14 season.

“The NHL Players’ Association confirmed to us today that it has consented to a revised Plan for Realignment, effective for the 2013-14 season,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement. “Our next step will be to bring the proposed Plan for Realignment to the NHL Board of Governors for its consideration. We will update the status of the process as future developments warrant.”

The NHL worked in conjunction with the NHLPA to formulate this realignment plan.

“After discussions with the Executive Board, the NHLPA has given consent to realignment, to be re-evaluated following the 2014-15 season,” NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr said in a statement.

According to various reports, in the NHL’s proposed plan the League will be broken into a two-conference, four-division set up with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets would move to the Eastern Conference and the Winnipeg Jets would move to the Western Conference.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will reportedly still consist of 16 teams, eight in each conference, but the League is proposing a wildcard system in which the top three teams in each division make the playoffs and the remaining spots are filled by the two teams in each conference with the next best record.

Report: Steven Jackson voids St. Louis Rams contract

We knew this day was coming: Steven Jackson finally appears to be ready to hit free agency.

Unofficial list of free agents

Check out this unofficial list of NFL restricted and unrestricted free agents for every team, which includes Greg Jennings. More …

The longtime St. Louis Rams running back voided his contract Thursday, according to Howard Balzer of ESPN Radio in St. Louis. It previously was reported that Jackson would indeed void the contract.

So why now? Voiding the deal on Thursday gives Jackson a five-day head start on the rest of the free-agent market. There are a lot of decent names available at running back, and Jackson might want to lock down a long-term contract before other top free-agent running backs like Ahmad Bradshaw, Reggie Bush and Rashard Mendenhall sign on the dotted line.

The Atlanta Falcons have been tied to Jackson the most, but plenty of teams make sense for him. Jackson isn’t going to be a true primary back at this stage of his career, but he can help a team out in a time-share role.

United open to Rooney sale

Image int_130306_press_pass_seg_on_rooney.jpg

Press Pass: Rooney’s uncertain future?

Press Pass: Rooney’s uncertain future?

Manchester United will consider the sale of Wayne Rooney in the summer for a fee of around £35 million, ESPN understands.

An Old Trafford source said that any prospective transfer was dependent on a “complicated chain of events”, but one that could also see Cristiano Ronaldo end up back at the club.

With Rooney controversially demoted to the bench and the Portuguese not ruling out a return to United, Wednesday night’s Champions League clash between United and Real Madrid was dripping with transfer subplots.

It is known, however, that the Premier League leaders are actively looking into a way to bring Ronaldo back, and that there was more to Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to drop Rooney than tactics or any injury concerns.

The United manager is understood to have scolded the England international about his fitness at the start of the season – the latest of a number of flashpoints between them since Rooney attempted to force his way out in October 2010.

Despite the now famous photos of Ferguson and his player smiling after a new deal had been signed at that time, their relationship has never fully healed. They also clashed at Christmas 2011, with the manager reportedly dropping Rooney for a Premier League fixture against Blackburn Rovers for disciplinary reasons.

This season has also marked the first time in three years that Rooney has not been the undisputed focal point of the team, after the arrival of Robin van Persie.

In that time, however, United had informal talks with Real Madrid over the prospective transfer of Rooney, but the Spanish club have no wish to purchase him at present. So far, the only club to have expressed an interest are Paris Saint-Germain – as reported by the Times a week ago.

It is unknown, however, whether Rooney himself would want to go to the French capital or even leave United at all. As such, given that they would also have to find a high-profile replacement, United are treading carefully and his departure is by no means certain.

It had been floated that Rooney could be used in some kind of part-exchange deal for Ronaldo but, with Real not interested at present, United may seek to offer Nani and cash for the Portuguese star.

Although there is now a willingness on both sides – United and Ronaldo – to bring the forward back to Old Trafford, there are a number of complications – not least the financing of such a deal.

United, meanwhile, retain an interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski as a direct replacement for Rooney. The Poland forward is expected to join Bayern Munich, but that deal is far from done and the Red Devils are continuing to monitor the situation.

Woods is tied with four others at six under.

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods and most of the world’s best golfers were on their games Thursday in the Cadillac Championship.

Except for the world’s No. 1 player.

Woods made birdie on half his holes on the Blue Monster at Doral for a 6-under 66. He was part of a five-way tie for the lead that included Masters champion Bubba Watson, former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Freddie Jacobson. Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan were among those one shot behind.

It was another struggle for Rory McIlroy. He hit only three fairways and made six bogeys that kept him at par or worse on a perfect day for scoring. He wound up with a 73, and has yet to have a round under par this year.
