Misfiring Real strike duo backed by coach

La Liga news

Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka says he is not worried about currently misfiring strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema, as he feels so long as they keep making chances and getting into position the goals will eventually come.

Higuain and Benzema were again off target during Saturday’s 2-1 La Liga win at Celta Vigo, when Cristiano Ronaldo’s poacher’s effort and penalty after Kaka was upended by home goalkeeper Javi Varas was needed to see off the relegation-threatened Galicians. Ronaldo now has 24 Primera Division goals this season, well ahead of Higuain [nine] and Benzema [seven] in Madrid’s charts.

Jose Mourinho’s assistant, Karanka, told reporters at Balaidos after the game that he would be more concerned if Madrid were not creating enough chances, but that was not the case.

“Forwards, as they always say, and it is the truth, go through spells of form,” he said. “It might seem that they are not being accurate enough, but the important thing is creating the chances. Last year the chances were going in and this year they are not going in as easily. But if we keep making chances they will start scoring and we will win matches more comfortably.”

Celta played a full part in a very open game, with striker Iago Aspas scoring a deflected equaliser soon after Ronaldo’s first goal, and substitute Park Chu Young heading off the cross bar in the closing stages. In a frantic ending to the match Higuain had previously shot wide from six yards after a rapid counter involving Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil had looked certain to put the game beyond doubt.

Karanka admitted his side had not been at their best in the first half, but had created enough opportunities to win the game comfortably after that.

“We played well enough to have won comfortably,” he said. “In the first 20 minutes or half an hour, the whole team struggled to get into the match. They played with a high defensive line and caught us offside a few times and we could not find a way through.

“In the last 15 minutes, and for part of the second half, the team controlled the match and we had more chances. The problem is that, perhaps, when we could have killed off the match, the goals did not come. And they have had the opportunity to equalise.”

Benitez and Ferguson clash once more

Interim Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez poured scorn on Sir Alex Ferguson’s suggestion that Manchester United’s tiredness accounted for Chelsea’s comeback in their 2-2 FA Cup quarter-final draw at Old Trafford.

The Premier League leaders were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, but Benitez’s side came back to earn a replay as substitute Eden Hazard and Ramires scored.

Ferguson, who downplayed the impact of Benitez’s substitutions, felt his side were exhausted after their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

But his Stamford Bridge counterpart pointed out that his side had played in Romania in the Europa League two days after that – and they had finished the stronger at Old Trafford.

“I thought you were joking,” the Spaniard said when asked about Ferguson’s comments. “They played on Tuesday, we played in Romania on Thursday. They were playing at home. They had everything in their favour.”

Ferguson and Benitez have had a fractious relationship since the latter’s time at Liverpool, and did not shake hands before the game. The Spaniard said he had waited in the tunnel for Ferguson, but that then United boss had walked straight past him.

“I was waiting,” he explained. “I have some education. I know a lot of people are watching, so I know what you have to do.”

The pair did not shake hands after the final whistle either, with Benitez saying: “I was celebrating with my players at the end.”

He said he felt the double change that saw him bring on Hazard and John Obi Mikel for Frank Lampard and Victor Moses had changed the game.

Chelsea supporters had chanted: “You don’t know what you’re doing” when the substitutions were made, but Benitez argued that the club’s busy fixture list made squad rotation necessary.

He said: “I’m a professional and we were going to Romania and I knew we had players who were a little bit tired and we had to manage them. We knew we had to make some substitutions and we did it. I cannot explain every single decision [to the fans].”

Chris Taylor battles with David Bentley

Both Millwall and Blackburn remain in this season’s FA Cup after grinding out a mediocre goalless draw in their quarter-final clash at the Den.

Neither side could break the deadlock and will face a replay at Ewood Park to determine which team will represent the Championship in the semi-finals.

2004 finalists Millwall created more chances to win the game throughout the 90 minutes and Rovers, who are yet to concede in this season’s competition, will be pleased to have left London with another chance of securing a trip to Wembley.

Andy Keogh hit a post and Danny Shittu forced a great save out of Blackburn’s Jake Kean whilst the visitors did not register a single shot on David Forde’s goal, although Joshua King saw a header hit the post with 13 minutes remaining.

The opening half an hour was short of both chances and quality as the two sides struggled to create openings.

Scott Dann suffered a cut above his eye in the 15th minute after being caught by Millwall striker Rob Hulse’s elbow in an aerial challenge.

The first decent effort came after 23 minutes when Liam Trotter bent a shot wide of Kean’s left-hand post as the hosts looked to take the initiative in the tie.

Millwall had the ball in the back of the net later in the half as Keogh headed home Chris Taylor’s corner but the whistle had already gone as Dany N’Guessan impeded Kean.

Former Wolves forward Keogh then saw a diving header come back off the post as he connected with Smith’s deep cross five minutes before the break.

Blackburn had a good chance to take the lead early in the second half but Jordan Rhodes could only fire over after latching on to David Bentley’s set-piece.

With the second half following a similar pattern to the first, Lions’ skipper Shittu picked up the ball in his own half before unleashing a piledriver from 40 yards which Kean tipped over for a corner.

Kenny Jackett’s side should have been ahead moments later when Keogh’s ball across the face of goal was ballooned over by Hulse.

The home side then enjoyed a period of sustained pressure but could not muster up an effort to beat Kean, with the final ball lacking quality on numerous occasions.

Blackburn came back into the game as the second half progressed and former Manchester United youngster King saw a climbing header come back off a post as they looked to snatch a semi-final berth late on.

It was Shittu who again came close to taking his side to the final four, stinging the palms of Kean from long range with the Rovers goalkeeper doing well to claw the rebound away from Hulse.

Dany N’Guessan then wasted a decent opportunity with just six minutes remaining as he blazed high and wide after cutting inside.

That proved to be the last chance for either side to settle the tie at the first time of asking, leaving both clubs waiting to see who their potential semi-final opponents could be.

Brace with four points as the Attack down the Otters

OWEN SOUND, Ont. – Cameron Brace scored two goals and set up two others as the Owen Sound Attack defeated the visiting Erie Otters 6-4 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League play.

Report: Patriots ‘have some interest’ in Mike Wallace

Tom Brady winging passes to Mike Wallace: Impossible to imagine? Maybe not.

Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald cited an agent to report that the New England Patriots “have some interest” in the free-agent wide receiver.

Schein: Dear Tim Tebow…

Adam Schein urges Tim Tebow to forget about the Jets and find someone who could really use him — like the Patriots. More …

It’s not implausible that the Patriots would put feelers out on Wallace. Tom Brady‘s contract extension generated cap space, and Wes Welker’s future with the team is uncertain. On top of that, Brandon Lloyd might be facing his release after a disappointing season.

New England has two of the NFL’s most dynamic pass-catching tight ends in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, but the team lacks what Randy Moss once gave the offense. Nobody on the roster can take the top off a defense, something Brady made the most of when Moss was in town. Wallace is an incomplete wideout — he’s not going to work the entire field, he’s frustrating in that sense — but he would give New England a wild new dimension.

With that said, multiple teams will pursue Wallace, and the Patriots aren’t the bidding-war type. Even if Bill Belichick has an eye for Wallace, there’s a difference between “interest” and the steps that come next.

Yo, Adrian: Team Mexico KOs U.S. behind duo

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com | 3/9/2013 12:45 A.M. ET

PHOENIX — First baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer off R.A. Dickey in the third inning, giving Team Mexico an early four-run lead on the way to a 5-2 victory over Team USA on Friday in the World Baseball Classic in front of a crowd of 44,256 at Chase Field.

Dickey didn’t have it early as the U.S. knuckleballer allowed a pair of runs in each of the first and third innings to a Mexico squad coming off a loss to Italy in Thursday’s opener of Pool D.

The big blow was the homer off Dickey by Gonzalez deep to right-center, a shot that was reviewed and passed muster via instant replay. Gonzalez had three RBIs in the game, the other coming on a first-inning infield grounder.

The outcome sets up a crucial doubleheader on Saturday for the two teams at Chase Field. Mexico plays Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET while the U.S. faces a must-win game against 2-0 Italy at 9 p.m. Both games can be seen on MLB Network and ESPN Deportes.

Italy defeated Canada earlier on Saturday, 14-4, to take control of the pool.

The U.S. could manage only two hits and a run off Mexico right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who last week was nursing a right groin strain that made him questionable for the tournament. Meanwhile, Dickey’s knuckleball wasn’t dancing and sat flat in the zone. He pitched four innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

When U.S. shortstop Jimmy Rollins doubled with two outs in the seventh, it was his 12th hit in Classic play, the most by any American player. Ken Griffey Jr. and David Wright each have 11.

The U.S. has had trouble with Mexico over the years. In 2003, the Americans were knocked out of an Olympic qualifier by Mexico, and three years later they were bumped from the second round of the inaugural Classic. Both losses were by identical scores of 2-1.

In the first round of the Classic in 2006, the U.S. defeated Mexico, 2-0. The two teams were in different pools and did not play in the ’09 Classic.

Gylfi Sigurdsson: I was right to snub Liverpool

Image gylfisigurdssontottenham_275x155.jpg

Gylfi Sigurdsson believes Tottenham’s lofty position in the Premier League proves he made the right decision to turn down Liverpool in favour of a move to Spurs last summer.

• Fitch: Few teams can match hot Spurs

The Icelandic midfielder was expected to link up with Rodgers last summer after successful spells under his guidance at Reading and Swansea, but he sealed a move to Tottenham instead and has insisted he is content with his decision, even though he has taken time to find his feet in the Spurs starting line-up.

“It was hard to turn down Liverpool because I knew Brendan,” Sigurdsson told reporters. “It wasn’t about the history at Liverpool because that is incredible, but I had to make a choice and I went with Tottenham.

“You can see how well this club has been doing over the last few years. They finished fourth last year and they did well in the Champions League two years before that.

“There was a lot going on here at Tottenham with the new training ground and the plans for another stadium. This is a great club with fantastic players and I’m pleased I made the choice I did. Hopefully we can be in the Champions League next season.

“You never know how things might be in this game. It could be that we were seventh in the table now and Liverpool could have been third because it is all close.”

Sigurdsson is looking forward to his Premier League meeting with Rodgers on Sunday at Anfield, as he is eager to build on what he hails as his best performance in a Spurs shirt in the Europa League against Inter Milan on Wednesday night.

“I owe him a lot for giving me an opportunity at Reading and then for giving me my first chance in the Premier League with Swansea,” added Sigurdsson. “It was really hard to tell him I didn’t want to play for him this time but it will be really good to see him on Sunday.

“Hopefully I get a chance to continue in the team because I feel as if my performance against Inter Milan was my best game for Spurs. It is good to get two starts in a row and these are the games you want to play in.

“It was really important to get my first league goal (against West Ham). Now I’ve got my second European goal. It gave me a bit of a lift and hopefully we can continue that run and build on it.”

Report: Redskins expect to re-sign tight end Fred Davis

Tight end Fred Davis is one my favorite potential value signings in free agency. Coming off a serious injury and a seriously weird courtroom drama, he shouldn’t cost a lot, but he has the skill set to be a difference-making tight end.

The Washington Redskins know Davis best, and it sounds like they intend to keep him.

“The Redskins have told others they expect to re-sign Davis,” John Keim of the Washington Examiner writes.

Offseason Forecast: Redskins
With the offseason under way, Around The League examines what’s next for all 32 teams. Khalil Garriott tackles the ‘Skins. More …

Keim didn’t intend for this information to be headline news, but it’s telling. The Redskins are operating with the hope and expectation that they will be able to bring Davis back. In the meantime, they might have tried to depress Davis’ value by questioning his ability to come back 100 percent from a torn Achilles tendon.

Keim writes that the Redskins are “likely” to be paying Davis in 2013. They have Logan Paulsen on the roster, but Davis has a much higher ceiling as a game-breaker if he’s healthy. Perhaps Davis won’t be back at full strength early this year, but he’s a nice long-term, low-cost gamble. That’s especially true if other tight ends on the market like Dustin Keller and Jared Cook get signed first.

Suarez showing Messi-like skill, says Enrique

Jose Enrique believes his Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez shows similarities to Lionel Messi in his ability to go past defenders.

Luis Suarez has been exceptional for Liverpool this season

PA PhotosLuis Suarez has 21 Premier League goals this season

Enrique, 27, said he struggles to find ways to stop the Uruguay international, who is in a rich vein of form, in training.

Suarez, who has scored six goals in his last three matches, is the Premier League’s leading scorer with 21 and has a total of 28 in all competitions this season.

But left-back Enrique says there is far more to the 26-year-old’s game than goals, explaining that his ability to dart past opponents is similar to that of Barcelona’s Messi.

“I tell Luis all the time that he always does the same thing – he tries to do nutmegs,” Enrique told Liverpool’s official website. “And you just know that he is going to do it, but you can’t stop him.

“When you know someone, you can know what they are going to do – but he’s still a very difficult player to train against.

“He scores so many goals in training. It’s like with Messi – everyone says he is going to cut inside all the time. And you know that he is going to do this but you can’t stop him from cutting inside and scoring goals. With Luis, it’s the same.”

Enrique said that “of course there are some differences between the two players”, adding: “Luis is a great all-round striker, but it’s not just about the goals, it’s about what he gives to the team – it’s about his personality and his attitude.

“He’s the same in training as what you see in games. He gives 100% all the time.”

Suarez is expected to battle it out with Manchester United striker Robin van Persie and Tottenham winger Gareth Bale for this season’s PFA Player of the Year award, and Enrique hopes his team-mate can lift the trophy.

“Van Persie and Bale are on fire,” he said. “Van Persie has been a very important player for Manchester United this season and Bale is doing very well.

“But Luis is my friend, so I would like him to win the Player of the Year award. It will be difficult for him. But, of course, I think he deserves it.”
