Report: Paul Kruger might spur two-team bidding war

The Cleveland Browns want Paul Kruger. So do the Indianapolis Colts. With both teams flush with cash, Kruger finds himself in a very enviable spot.

The Baltimore Sun reported Sunday that the Browns and Colts are expected to engage in a bidding war for the Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The Plain Dealer reported earlier Sunday that the Browns were targeting Kruger and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. The Ravens are likely to make a hard push to retain Ellerbe. Kruger — expected to command $10 million to 12 million on the open market — is believed to be well beyond Baltimore’s budget.

Kruger has a tie to the Colts in head coach Chuck Pagano, who was once Kruger’s defensive coordinator in Baltimore. The Colts are seeking a replacement for Dwight Freeney.

Rosenthal: Top 85 free agents

This year’s free-agent crop lacks star power, but provides immense depth. Gregg Rosenthal ranks available players. More…

Kruger set a career high with nine sacks in the regular season before adding 4.5 more in four playoff games. He sat for stretches of Super Bowl XLVII in favor of Courtney Upshaw for run-defense reasons, but still managed two sacks of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

According to The Sun, the Browns have also expressed strong interest in Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril. If the Browns lose out on Kruger, they might settle on Avril. Both players could be overpaid in this market.

Regina’s Charles an All-Star both on and off the field

University of Regina defensive lineman Stefan Charles can cause a lot of trouble for opposing offences in between the white lines, but he knows how to avoid it off the field.

During his time growing up in Toronto as a young boy before moving to Oshawa where he attended Eastdale CVI, Charles knew he wanted to make a different choice than his friends coming out of high school.

“I didn’t want to get caught up in that stigma,” the 23-year-old said. “Some of my friends got killed and some of them went to jail, so I just didn’t want to be a part of anything like that.”

“I just wanted to get out of Toronto. Toronto is a beautiful city, but a lot of my friends were going down the wrong path and I didn’t want to go down that path. I wanted to get out of there.”

Without leaving the country, Charles got about as far away from Toronto as possible in hopes of continuing his journey to a professional football career. He moved to British Columbia to play for the Big Kahuna (now Langley) Rams of the Canadian Junior Football League. It was with the Rams that Charles received coaching from retired CFL defensive lineman, Daved Benefield.

“I knew everything I could learn from him would pay dividends. He was a good mentor and taught me a lot,” Charles said of the two-time CFL All-Star.

After the 2009 season with the Rams in BC, it was Benefield who helped Charles make his way to Regina.

“I wanted to play CIS by any means and then Dave messaged me on Facebook saying the University of Regina was looking for defensive linemen,” Charles explained.

“One guy that really pushed Stefan was Daved Benefield,” Regina Rams head coach Frank McCrystal said.

“We really believed he had potential simply because of his size – he’s a big man that can move. We wanted to bring him in as soon as we could.”

And just like that Charles was Regina-bound. A place he has come to call his second home.

“They embraced me and welcomed me, all of my teammates,” the 6-foot-5, 310-pound defensive lineman said.

“He’s quiet and it really takes a while for him to open up to people. But he is very, very well liked here by his teammates. He’s really matured in a whole number of parts of the parcel,” McCrystal said.

Part of Charles’ maturation process has, of course, taken place on the football field.  In 2012, he registered 27.5 tackles, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble in only eight games. He earned CIS first team All-Canadian honours in 2011, as did fellow Rams defensive lineman, Akiem Hicks.

A transfer from Sacramento City College, Hicks played the 2011 season with Regina on the Rams defensive front, forming a talented duo with Charles. A California native, Hicks garnered a lot of attention from NFL scouts and was eventually selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints.

“It just showed me, being a Canadian player, that the talent level isn’t that far off from the Americans,” Charles said of his one-time teammate and good friend.

In fact one CFL personnel evaluator said he’s heard more than a few people say that he was more consistent, just as dominant and just as athletic as Hicks.

As Charles’ journey towards a professional football career continues to gain nothing but positive momentum, it has become clear that the decision he made to enroll at the University of Regina was undoubtedly the right one.

“A lot of the goals I set out back home have been easier to achieve here. I’m a youth care worker here, I’m in university and I’m just trying to live a positive life.”

Charles shares his outlook on life with kids that are having trouble or come from a broken household at the Ranch Ehrlo Society in Regina. A place he spends plenty of time working in the off-season.

“It’s cool because I can reach out to the kids. I’m like a big brother,” Charles explained. “I try to give them hope and ambition, and let them know they can always change their life at any point in time. And focus on good things.”

Charles enjoys giving his attention to the kids at Rancho Ehrlo, similar to the way he attracts it with his play on the football field.

His first time in front of pro scouts came during the week of testing and practicing leading up to the 2012 CIS East West Bowl.
“After seeing all the experienced coaches and scouts there it really dawned on me, like ok Stef, you know this is unfolding,” Charles said.

“If you’re a big guy that can play inside, if they have to double team you and they can’t move you off the line, you’re someone that they’re very interested in,” McCrystal said.

“Scouts like his aggressiveness, they like his push, they like his ability to move his feet, all of those things.”

Scouts sure liked what they saw from Charles after a week of getting an up close look at him. Enough that Canadian talent evaluators combined to rank him number four on the CFL scouting bureau list among all 2013 draft eligible prospects.

“It’s always difficult at any level to find a defensive tackle. This is a Canadian that can do that,” McCrystal said.

“A lot of times what CFL teams are doing is bringing Americans in at defensive tackle – this guy is gold for the CFL because of his size and his abilities. Some teams are saying he would start for them right now.”

However, Charles knows better than to read his own press clippings.

“I’m the type of person – I want to wait until I actually arrive to say I’ve done it.”

It seems like just a matter of time until Charles will be able to announce his arrival on the professional football stage.

Tiger Woods made eight birdies and one bogey on Friday.

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods tied his personal best with 17 birdies over two rounds on the Blue Monster. What mattered more to him was a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the Cadillac Championship.

On a leaderboard packed with golf’s biggest names, Woods seized control with six birdies in an eight-hole stretch around the turn. That carried him to a 7-under 65, two shots clear of former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell (67).

A birdie-birdie finish by McDowell prevented a dream final group – Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson, sparked by a visit to Augusta National earlier this week, had a 67 and joined Steve Stricker (67) three shots out of the lead.

Rory McIlroy showed signs of turning the corner with a 69, his first round under par this year.

Rangers C Brad Richards back in lineup vs. Senators after missing 2 games

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rangers centre Brad Richards is back in the New York lineup Friday night against the Ottawa Senators after missing two games following a hard hit into the boards five days earlier.

Richards, who sat out a pair of Rangers wins, skated on his own Friday as his teammates had the morning off, and felt well enough to return. No specific injury was announced, but New York coach John Tortorella had said that Richards was “banged up.”

Richards was shoved from behind into the boards by Buffalo’s Patrick Kaleta on Sunday in the third period of New York’s 3-2 victory, but returned to the ice that night. Neck and back soreness are believed to be what kept him out since then.

Kaleta was ejected from the game and then received a five-game suspension from the NHL.

Richards has two goals and 11 assists in 20 games this season.

Howard: Former coach Van Gundy supports me

By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — In the war of words between Dwight Howard and his former Orlando Magic teammates, one significant voice weighed in on the side of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Howard said that his former Magic coach, Stan Van Gundy, reached out to him Thursday to offer support.

“He knows I would never disrespect my teammates,” said Howard after Lakers’ shootaround Friday in advance of their game against the Toronto Raptors. “He understood exactly what I was saying and that’s what he expressed.”

Howard He knows I would never disrespect my teammates. He understood exactly what I was saying and that’s what he expressed.

– Dwight Howard on
Stan Van Gundy’s support

Van Gundy believes Howard wasn’t trying to badmouth any of his former teammates.

“He did not, in my opinion, mean to say ‘I didn’t play with good players in Orlando,’” Van Gundy, currently an analyst for NBC Sports, told the L.A. Daily News. “The question was about his demeanor. He’s been criticized for his demeanor on the court. He was basically trying to defend himself in his demeanor saying he can be smiling and still be serious about winning. What he meant to say is ‘We had an underrated or under the radar team in Orlando and we won a lot of games and I was the best player on that team and this was my demeanor. So what’s the problem now?’”

After Howard told KCAL, a Los Angeles CBS affiliate, this week that his former Magic squad was “a team full of people who nobody wanted,” former Orlando teammates Jameer Nelson, Rashard Lewis and J.J. Redick all shot back with criticism of their own.

“I’m not surprised by it,” Redick told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “I would be more surprised when Dwight starts taking responsibility. That would be the most negative thing I can say, but that’s the truth.”

Nelson told the Orlando Sentinel that he was “disappointed” in Howard’s comments, while Lewis said Howard’s comments were “disrespectful.”

Howard and Van Gundy have been texting on and off all season long and Howard said his relationship with the man who coached him for five seasons in Orlando has not been affected by the fact that Van Gundy was fired by the Magic last season in what many viewed as an attempt to appease Howard.

“Me and Stan have a pretty good relationship,” Howard said. “We respect each other and we continue to talk to this day. We’ve kept the business side out of everything that we discuss and he understands how I feel.”

Howard first revealed his continued dialogue last month before the Lakers played the Miami Heat.

“We’ve talked a lot this season,” Howard said. “He’s been one of my biggest supporters, always telling me to keep playing. He knows that I’m not 100 percent, but just keep working. He knows how hard I work. He’s been upset with a lot of stuff that’s been said, but he just tells me to stay strong and stay with it.

“Everything that was out was rumors and stuff being said by other people but both of us understand that’s the business side of things. People are always going to twist it and turn it when they look at TV and unfortunately me and Stan can’t come out and defend ourselves every two minutes. But we have a great relationship. What a lot of people need to understand is that everything that you see on TV or read is not always true. Me and him have a good relationship. Me and Stan are cool.”

The Lakers travel to Orlando to play the Magic on Tuesday, marking Howard’s first trip back to the Amway Center since being traded to Los Angeles in August.

“I understand that we’re about to play Orlando,” Howard said. “They’re just trying to get everybody riled up for the game and it’s understandable, but I love that city. I had eight great years there. We accomplished a lot, but that’s over with. It’s in the past. We all have to move forward. I know people are getting upset, but we all have to move forward.”

Howard does not anticipate a warm welcome.

“I know things are going to happen,” Howard said. “I know a lot of people are upset that I left and the way I left but I always think about, I spent eight great years in Orlando and it was an unbelievable time and it ended on a bad note, but that should never erase the years that we had of happiness. It’s over with now.”

Is Howard ready to face the music?

“I have no choice but to be ready,” Howard said.

Matt Moore signs new contract with Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins aren’t finished re-signing their own.

Harrison: Team needs in free agency

With free agency set to kick off at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 12, Elliot Harrison identifies priorities for all 32 NFL teams. More …

NFL.com’s Jeff Darlington reported Friday that quarterback Matt Moore has decided to stay in South Florida, inking a new contract with the Dolphins, according to a source close to the player. This comes hours after Miami re-signed wide receiver Brian Hartline on Thursday night.

Terms of Moore’s new contract were not immediately known and the Dolphins have yet to announce the deal.

It’s smart work by general manager Jeff Ireland. Moore widely was considered the top quarterback in a thin NFL free-agent market and likely would have been courted by multiple teams. Moore wants to be a starter, but he’s comfortable with the Dolphins and close friends with second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The Dolphins weren’t about to let Hartline walk away, either, inking the wideout to a contract that nearly pays out $31 million over five years. Ireland has said repeatedly he wants to surround Tannehill with weapons, but retaining Moore gives Miami organization-wide insurance that Pat Devlin isn’t the next guy up under center.

Moore was a gritty performer in 2011, starting 12 games for the Dolphins and earning team MVP honors. His camp must have known there wouldn’t be major money coming his way on the open market, but he’s certain to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid backups with the Dolphins.

Another wise move by the Dolphins with the launch of free agency just days away.

Brian Hartline, Miami Dolphins agree on five-year contract

Image 0ap1000000140861.jpg

The Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Brian Hartline agreed on a five-year contract worth nearly $31 million, a source close to the player confirmed late Thursday.

The deal includes $12.5 million in guaranteed money.

“It feels great,” Hartline said. “It feels great to know hard work and perseverance is worth something. But now, it’s about winning games. I think we’re on the right path. I think we’re close.

“I’m excited to see what happens in free agency. We want to win. We’re set up so we have cap room to make some moves, and that’s one way we can win football games. It’s important. And the draft will be important, too. It’s exciting.”

Hartline enjoyed a breakout season in 2012, his fourth year in the NFL, with 74 receptions for 1,083 yards.

The Dolphins are making former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace their No. 1 target in free agency, which begins on March 12. The Dolphins want to match Wallace with their two young receivers Hartline and Davone Bess to give second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill an array of weapons in the passing game.
